Former Representative James Morrison of Sarpy county pleaded guilty in the Lancaster coun ty district court to th charge of attempted bribery brought by At torney General D?vis. i Morrison was one of the popular members of the last legislature and the youngest of the entire" body. Last February he was made special ex aminer of farm mutual insurance romnanien under the state insurance bureau and has been working for the department until today. Later he went -J fo Mr. Straub and told him that he had found some things, which if he ' reported to the department, would make the company a lot of trouble and asked Mr. Straub how much he would give him to make tjje kind of a report he would like to have. Mr. Straub told him that if lie would come to the office on the following day, December 11, he would in- 0 troduce him to his brother and per hans thev could make a deal. T. J. Morrison told him $7,500. Straub then paid him a part of the money in marked bills and after he had re ceived it the men in concealment stepped forth and Marshal Carroll arrested him. ( v Later he made a full confession . to Attorney General Davis and when arraigned, waived preliminary exam ination and went direct with Davis to the court of Judge Stewart and pleaded guilty. No definite sentence 'was given, and1 he was paroled in ' the custody of Probation Officer Wharton until ftrther orders of the court. , ' "Morrison claimed that he was bad ly in need of money as the reason for his act. He said a mortgage was due on his farm and he coulcTnot get it renewed and that his mother had to go to a hospital for an operation and he had no rrioney to take her. Arthur Evans, adopted sou nf Potr s Hammond, was adiuriued heir to the Hammond estate by a jury in district court nere alter rear ing a suit introduced by Susan Hearle, who alleged that she was the common-law wite ot tne Dawson county pioneer; The evidence showetl that Mrs. Hearle at all times had represented herself to be housekeep er. During her employment with Mr. Hammond the couple lived in Omaha and a few years before his death moved to Gothenburg. , Mrs. Hearle alleged that she en tered into a contract to marry with Mr. Hammond in 1910, but that they kept the matter a secret until his death. - Arthur Evans claimed the estate under a contract of adoption made by his grandparents with the Ham monds in 1894. Frank Vosika, who lost several head the past week, says that one of his animals died within 15 min utes of the time it was turned into the field.
