A THE BEE: OMAHA, SATURDAY, ' DECEMBER 11, ' 1920. 18 Lis 4 4 III II u ', - t 'J i Standards of Taste And Their Influence - v - Some people claim that outside di versions have made fatal inroads upon home influences. And when one reflects that many families spend at many evenings of the week at the '"movies" as in their homes there does seem danger that the adventur ous life flashed befou- them in the darkened room may reflect their sense of proportion toward the ac tualities of life. But oitentimcs the danger in a habit is not so much in the thing practiced as in letting the practjce fasten ttself upon one until other things dwindle iu relative in portance. And the "movie" habit or the golf habit or the reading habit is dangerous in the proportion that.it takes one's activity ar.d enthusiasm from other things of greater impor tance. 1 Doubtless the motioi: pfiture pro ducers and the book publishers would be glad to have the public taste inir! .1 (J J I lruvc MUiii miry kuuiu ucycnu upu" making the highest standard of their productions the most popular ouos. They would then be abli to hold the average audiences atfd continually r.dd new elements from among the people with more hifchly developed tastes. The home can aid in that di rection by guiding children in the formation of good taste through tak ing them to good shows. and atfer v, ard discussin with them She points of excellence which put those par ticular pictures on a higher plane than others and by encouraging a taste for good reading until ihey tome to prefer good books over poor ones. f . Whenever the tniulic demands the best and refuses to accVt anything short of that the best will be abund antly forthcoming, whether it be movies or merchandise or men for . public office, f The formation of the public taste should, like charity, be gin at home. It does actually he gin there, and it becomes good tatc in whatever degree the average home encourages mental -habits which develop in the individual a standard of values enablinsr him to secoarnize ment in any form in which i he finds it. Dear Miss Fairfax: I am en- gaged : to be married to a young - lady, have known her for a"bout "a s year, being engaged for a month or Sheas a number of men frineds whom she meets occasionally. Be ing an orphan 's and alone in her home, she received a visit from one' of her men friends recently. She duly infomed me of this, and, ak though I -sincerely belie've that her conduct in having other men call on her is not quite right, yet I wish to " be tolerant, and therefore I did not object, although I informed, her that it was her duty to inform the other fnen of our status and to let me meet these other men that is,, if she intended to preserve their friend- ,. ship. This, in my humble opinion, : moderate request was denied. ' . The other ; day while she and I .' had spent an' afternoon outdoors . one of her1 men friends called on her V home, was received by neighbors and decided to wait her return. - When she wa informed of the ' presence pi her "friend, I, the so called fiance, was expected to leave, ,as it would "embarrass my fiancee's friend to find me there." I, of course, cotid not think of it, but stayeM and thus met my fiancee's "friend." Since then things have become tmbear f able.-my 'fiancee tells me flut I am - uncharitable, narrow-minded and what not, . '" v . She is' 27. I am 34. K We both should claim possession of common sense. My, fiancee insists she is right in this matter, but I don't agree with her; and, judgingmy "mar ried", future from my "engaged' past, I cannot see happiness in store tot me, as I fail to understand how my fiancee and later my wife, should be permitted to have men friends vhom I don't know and not be sup posed to know: and, further, why mv -fiancee should place "mere men friends", above fiance or husband. X . A MERE MAN. This conduct is inexcusable. I believe with all my heart in the free dom of the individual but not when it is gained at somebody else's cost, nor y$t when it is unfair and against all tradition and common sense. Your fiancee should telj all the other men of her acquaintance of her en gagement Those men who are good enough friends' to meet you and go ; on, being friends should stay in her ...life the others should go. Her Vonduct in the instance you cite was in extremely bad taste. Dear Miss Fairfax: I have been . going out with $ fellow for two years ana ne mtroaucea me io nis dcsi friend. It was almost love at first sight between his best friend and myself. Do you think it right for me to go out with his best friend when the fellow is 'a good as en gaged t me? It has caused many a fight between these two devate friends. What shall I do? . . , v GUSSIE Choose between the two men. Be honest" about it. Then noone can blame you, and the friendship whij;h might break through your indeci sion can resnme operation. Al! that's needed is for you to cbnquer your own coquetry and the excite ment of having two men quarrel over your charming society. Marrying a Divorced Man. Dear Mss Fafrfixi 'I " am 27. At 21 I -was married, and divorced after -a year. Now, MUc Fairfax.'! did not mccjt a girl -from then until last summer whom I cquld really care for. She tells 'me that she can never love another man as she does me. but that' she will never marry me, because I have been married before. '' ; JOE C. The IgJH is all wrong. Su,rcly she wouldn't condemn-you to a life of loneliness because of an unhappi-'i nes for which you weren't to-blame. She ought to have enough . tender ness and devotioh "to Jeel that she'4 like to make up to you for your jpast suffering.: I cannot believe that she will let an outworn prejudice like this stand in the way of the real feeling which exists between - you. To sum up briefly the art of man tel decoratiw: Begin by studying! the mantel itself, noting its size, pro portions, color, texture and structur al details'. Then decide, not how many, but how few ornaments will dress it harmoniously. Next make your selection, carefully choosing objects which will harmonize with oua-anotlier and with the mantel' piece in scale, form and color, and nnarfy, arrange these in such 'a man ner as. to" produce an effect of per fect balance. j The observance of these few and simple rules is by no means difficult and will make all the difference be tween a genuinely artistic and dig nified composition and a meafung less hodge-podge unworthy of the important office it fulfills. , .
