Sandlcs, of Columbus O.. .ecretary of the National Farmers' congress, will tie the t.rincipal .speaker at the Twelfth annual thrce tlay session of the Nebraska Farm ers' congress, which will open in the Rome Hotel December 14. In that the state lcgislatute meets in January and laws affecting the farmer are scheduled to come up at (hat session, Secretary J. H. Grinell declared it is important that as many tarmers as possible attend the con vention to assist in making sugges tions for laws favorable to their in tercsts. A large number of state senators and representatives have signified their intention to attend to learn the needs of the faimrs. Warm Arguments Due. because farm products are so low, ted-hot discussions arc anticipated !y the officers. While the farmers' congress is n nonpartisan organization, it is hint ed that pressure will be brought to bear upon President-elect Hardin? to see that a man from this section, who, ai Secretary Grinell has said, '"can represent agriculture as it is," be appointed to the office ot secre tary of agriculture. Larson to Speak. Other speakers for the opening session and their subjects include: .1 David Larson, commissioner of f, the Omaha Chamber of Commerce, address of welcome; Charles Graff, vice president of Nebraska Farmers' congress, Bancroft, response; II. F. Mcintosh, manager of the agricul tural bureau. Chamber of Commerce, "What Can We Do To Make Farm Life Worth While?" At the session December 15, O. G. Smith, president of thee ongress, will deliver the annual address. An ad dress on "Needed Farm Legislation," will be delivered by Hon. C. H. Sloan of Geneva. Bankruptcy Hearing on Realty Company Postponed A score of stockholders in the Cankers Realty company against which bankruptcy proceedings were instituted October 8, were present in lederal court yesterday, only to learn that the hearing was again postponed. Illness of F. C. Haver, secretary and treasurer of the realty company, was given as the reason of the post ponement. Working men and farmers from Nebraska, Kansas and Iowa, who in vested savings in the company made up those awaiting the hearing. B. II. Dunham, referee in the bankruptcy proceedings, declared the hearing would be held this after noon or tomorrow. Beatrice Fireman Hurt In Fall From Building L--rt Beatrice, ieb., Dec. 0. He was removed to a hospital, but his injuries arc not re garded as serious. Man Charged th Failure To Pay Alimony, Arrested ' Beatrice Neb., Dec. 6. (Special.) Archie Johnson was arrested at Wyniore and brought to Beatrice on the charge of failing to pay ali mony to his divorced wife as or dered by the court. The case against him will probably be heard Monday. Elks Hold Services. Heatrice. Neb.. Dec. 6. (Special.) The local lodge of "Elks held me morial services in their lodge room here Sunday afternoon at 3:30, the memorial address being given by Attorney John Dclehant, former ex alted ruler. Mrs. Ruth W. iiocott, a widow, 21, who says her home is at McCook, Neb., was arrested last night by city detectives Gcnty and Schneider and is being held at the city hall police" station on a for gery charge. i The police allege thaf the young woman passed three bqgus checks totaling $90 on the A. T Lewis and Son company for merchandise. Mrs. Hocott, who is stopping at the Milo hotel, told officers that the three checks had been given to her by a man friend and that she did not know they were worthless. Chief of Detectives Rinker stated Saturday evening that the young woman had been in trouble here sev eral months ago. at which time she was found in a hotel room with an other girl who had a large amount of stolen goods in her possession. Mrs. Hocott waj given an oppor tunity to leave the city at that time and had promised to remain away. Rinker declared. Harding and Wilson Asked To Attend Park Conference Des Moines, Dec. 6. President Wilson and President-elect Harding have both been invited to attend the national conference on parks to be held here next month. The' in vitations sent to them read, in part: "Co-operation with John Barton Payne, secretary of the interior, and in recognition of the importance of the public park movement throughout the United States, the governor of Iowa has the honor to invite you to a national conference on parks to he held in Des Moines January 10, 11. 12, inclusive, 1921. "You are earnestly requested to be present and your early notification of this intention will be appreciated." Man Sentenced to Prison For Statutory Attack Tecumseh, Neb., Dec. 6. (Spe cial.) Judge Willard E. Stewart of Lincoln, who has been presiding over the Pawnee county district court at Pawnee City for Judge J. B. Ra per. has passed sentence on Joseph C. Wheeler of Pawnee county, found guilty of a statutory attack on Mrs. Luduska Bollinger. A sentence of from two to 15 years in the state penitentiary at hard labor was im posed. Spe cial) While calling on Miss' Mary Pictznicicr at her home seven miles northeast of here Sunday evening, William Ilagge, young farmer, was mysteriously shot in the back of the head. He was taken to a hospital early this morning where his condition is reported critical. Miss Pietymcici4 keeps house for her brothers on their farm. Young llagge has been id the habit of call ing on her Sunday evenings. Last evening about 7, a shotgun was placfd against the window and fired at close range. The shots took effect in the Lack of Haggc's head. Mystery surrounds the shooting because the young man is the sou of Clans Ilagge, leading farmer of the community, and was known to have had no enemies. Frank Macy, an ngct! homesteader from the banks of the Niobrara river in northern Holt county, was picked up by the officers on the out skirts of O'Neill, as he was wand ering aimlessly about, a statement of his taes elapsed in his tightly clenched hand. He was taken before the insanity board and sent to the hospital for the insane, at Norfolk. Macy homesteaded a Jo':- acre piece of land on the river years ago and has lived I here since. On receiving the tax statement he had started to walk to O'Neill, 30 miles away. He walked all night, getting an oc cassional lift from freighters. Crete Postmaster Resigns to Resume Army Commission Crete, Neb., Dec. 6. (Special.) Postmaster Seward L. Mains has re signed and will report at Fort Oma ha, December 14, and resume his commission as a second lieutenant in the army. He served during the war and was later appointed post master, taking charge of the office August 1. 1920. President Wilson addressed an appeal yester day to the American people for con tributions to the Near East relief. None of the allies in the war he recalled, had suffered more severely in proportion to their numbers than the Armenians and other peoples of the near east. Recent renewal of onslaughts against Armenia , by Turkish nationalists, the Kurds and the bolshcvists, he added, had placed 1,000,000 people'iu imminent danger of starvation un'ess aid vas again offered. He urged that the American people contribute generously "out of ) their abundance. j "Relief work in this section of the I world is entirely under the direction I of the Near East Relief," he said. '''Since this organization was formed. ii has raised and disbursed with great economy and cflicicncv, more than $41,000,000. A nation has been s;:ved and at least 1,000,000 persons arc alive today who would have per ished. Orphan Girl Balked In Effort to Get Home After Long Journey Balked in her efforts to reach her home in Tomsk, Siberia, after traveling more than half way round the world with a colony of Russian children, in charge of the American Red Cross, livdolkia Corclkina. 8, left New York for San Francisco yesterday on her way to China. She will be cared for in the orient by the American Red Cross until con d'tions improve and pcimit her re turn. The little girl passed through New York last September on her way to France after being brought here with several hundred other Russian children, who were war refugees at Vladivostok.
