The stock market and the conimodity markets moved in opposite directions today, and the movement Avas somewhat spectacular in each, lhc 9 cental, per buijhel rise in 'wheat, making a total recovery eriJ8 cents in hardly more than a week, was in reality the most significant of the day's inci dents, but the decline on the stock exchange attracted considerable at tention. It occurred after many stocks had advanced at the opening, notably the more highly speculative oil stocks, of which Mexican Pe troleum was bid up 4 points in a scries of small lot purchases. Pressure on the market, which was quite evidently of professional L origin, uef-an wun me railway snares. These stocks were sold down without much discrimination, but with Readintr and Southern Pa cific the principal marks of weak ness. After the first half hour the selling extended to the whole mar ket. Mexican Petroleum fell UH points from its early high price, and net declines of 1 to 4 points occurred in most of the other active indus trial shares. Except in so far as the markets have chosen to take account of the probable tightening of money during the next four months, there was no obvious reason for the day's movement. It was apparently con ducted by professional groups who believed the speculative position to be uncertain in itself and likely to be sensitive to either disappointed expectations or unfavorable news. ' Call Money fnehanged. Call money loaned again all vday at 7 per cent; this being the fourth successive day "on which that rate has been uninter ruptedly maintained. Foreign unchanged markets were Irreg ular and unsettled, with rates on Spain, Italy and Berlin especially weak. More Intereatlng that this movement was the day's decline in silver, which at London again touched the year's low level of 3 pence, first reached on November 30. and which went at New York below the year's previous minimum. The case of the sll- x Omaha, Dec. 6. All grain prices scored advances with wheat and rye leading. Trad ing in wheat was slow in getting un der way. Offerings were finally sold at an- advance of 6c to 2c. Rye was up 10c to 11 c. Corn was sev eral cents up and oats advanced a cent for the bulk. Barley was strong. The English average, like our own, reached lasf spring Its high point for 1920 and for the whole war porlod, but the subsequent decline was considerably slower In England than In the United States.
