rf3 v4V -4v'-' Toy Planes Fly 130 Feet and Perform Stunts Output, of Old Santa Glaus' Workshop This Year Is More Amazing Than Ever Before. A great poet once said, "A boy's will is tlie wind's will." Toymakers liave evidently taken this saying as their motto as they have considered almost every conceivable trend of hoys' minds in the manufacture of their Christinas tovs. For the pugnacious and war-like there are toys of a war-time flavor. Among them are siege guns which shoot wooden bullets, machine Rims shooting smaller wooden bullets anil others which only make perforations in a paper tape, although the sound of the toy is wonderfully like the .machine guns their grewn-up broth ers heard in France. "Stunt" Airplanes. l'or the studious there are elec trical toys, building apparatus With which houses, automobile trucks and other wonderful things may be con structed and engineering and wire less outfits. For the boy of mechanical turn there are railroad trains, automo biles and street cars operated by springs or electricity. Then there are airplanes which fly 100 to 1,200 feet and by clever manipulation of the stabilizer they can be made to do "stunts" known to grownup avi ators. The old standby like father cot trom .Satua Clans when he was a boy are not overlooked. They were rubber-tired tricvcles. drums, sleds. rolles skates, ice skates and sport goods. Are American-Made. The little girls have not been for gotten by the toyniakers. There are beautiful dolls, some that say "papa and mamma" in a baby voice; dishes, stoves, pianos, play houses with play furnitue arid all the things that delight the little feminine mind. Most of the wonderful toys now 011 display at the big department stores are American-made, only a few com ing from Germany and Japan. The beautifully-colored picture books, without which no Christmas would be complete, come from Germany. Previous to the war American , kiddies depended on Germany for their toys. During the war the toy market was almost ruined. Neces sity showed the way to American toy makers and the result is Ameri can toys bid fair to take the front rank. t Before the war little boys liked to play war. They liked to receive guns, cannons and swords on Christ mas, Some of, them were danger ous. War Toys Are Safe. The late war has left its imprint on the toy makers. They continue to cater to the little boys' military tendency by making engines of war in the exact replica of those used in the war, yet they have been care ful to make them safe for peace time playing. The general trend of toys is to v aid the educational and instructive 'kind. Toy makers are producing toys which teach as well as provide pleasure. ' J. C. Weston Elected , To Ajax Presidency Joseph C. Weston was elected president and general manager of the Ajax kubber company, Inc., at a meeting of the board of directors, November 27. President Weston came to the Ajax company as vice president about a vear and half ago from the United States Rubber company, with which organization and its subsidiaries he was connected in executive capacities for more than 20 years. Metal Brackets. Car owners who do their own re pair work often need metal brackets or angle pieces of a certain size and shape. These are quite easy to make in the garage with the ordinary tools and a vise'out of soft rolled brass or iron strip from 1-16 to 1-2 inch thick, and this strip is so easy to obtain in a variety of widths from any metal warehouse that it does not pay to cut up h sheet. If brass is used it should be made quite soft by beating t redness and plunging iii to water. To save time and avoid waste of material always make a thin cardboard templet or pattern of the fitting and then work to it In most cases the holes for screws may be drilled before bending the stnp m ine vise. . Water Leaks. When water leakage develops be tween the rubber hose and the outlet from the cylinder jacket, or where the hose joins the radiator pipe, it can be obviated by, wrapping the joints with ordinary adhesive tape. The proper method to follow is to remove the clamps, tape the joints and shellac the tape. When the shel lac is dry the hose clamps should be replaced. Be Sure that the clamp draws up n a perfect circle. If it is out of shape and will not draw up properly it will bunch up the rubber hose so that leakage will begin again before long. Chipped Gears. Chipping of the gears is usually caused by gears that are too hard, a pinion too far in or too far out of mesh with the ring gear, improper alignment of either of the gears or a ring gear sprung or bent. The best remedy is to install new gears, but sometimes the chips may be fished out through the grease plug hole, or housing cover, after loosening it with a screw driver or punch, thus avoiding the necessity of dissem bling the housing. If a number of teeth chip off at the outer ends chamber them by grinding. Cam Shaft Knocks. A cam shaft moving endwise will produce a knock similar to a light connecting rod knock. As the en "gine speed is increased, the cam shaft is held in one position by the sdditional power required to drive it and the knock usually ceases. The cam shaft gear plate may be re moved and pressure exerted on the end of the shaft, holding it back against the front flange or the cam shaft bearing, thereby determining if end play if producing the knock. "John Fletcher! vice president of the Fort, Dearborn National bank of Chi cago, said that the use of the bicycle instead of the street car for getting the workman from one job to an other would greatly aid in fitting him better for his work and would also lessen his bill to the customer he served. Omaha seems to have ilready realized the value ot the bike by the number now being sold," was the opinion expressed by Mr. Roos. Another Stevens Record Reported to Omaha Agent Another Stephens record was re cently reported to Walter Johnson of the Mid City Motor and Supply company, which indicates that in a cross-country five-mile sweep stakes, staged at Iron City, the Stephens' time was 4:55 2-5. In Drilling. Kerosene should be used in drill ing, reaming or turning malleable iron or aluminum. On the other hand, turpentine should be used in stead of the oil for drilling hard steel, as it will enable rapid drilling of the metal. Reason Hudson Leads in Style EVERY day you see 'Hudsons two and three years old, which, both in performance and style, might well be judged of recent production. First, because Hudson design has never been guided by caprice. It has never sought attention , through dubious extremes. It has always been too sure of what are the essential permanencies of beauty and dignity. The Foremost Performance Car The advance ideas you will always find in Hud son. But they must earn their right to belong. That fact established its leadership of motor style. And with its eminence as creator of mode Hudson performance holds unquestioned position. By every way open to proof it has shown its su premacy. These are the sufficient reasons why Hudson for five years has led the sales of all fine cars. "It's remarkable how sinmplc and accurate these methods are. The hydrometer, for instance, tells the specific gravity of each cell, and in that way the exact state of charge. From this test and another known as the insulation test, the battery man can .tell whether a little re charging will put the battery in con dition, or opening up for repairs will be necessary. "Any car owner can make the hydrometer test. All there is to it is taking a sample of solution with the hydrometer, and then reading the figures on the little glass float. If the reading is above 1.250 the bat tery is properly charged. If below this figure, it should be given ad ditional charge at a service station."
