THE SUCCESSFUL
INTERVIEW

7 here was a merry sound of
twitterings and chirpings in the bird
store as Alec entered, and his own
' face seemed to reflect the cheer
fulness of his, surroundings.
He slipped past the thin, stooping
figure of the store's proprietor, who
was waiting on a pair of prospec
tive customers in the front of the
place, and swayed toward the young
girl weighing bird seed for a small
child whose chin scarcely reached
lo the counter.
; "It's conic, Hue," Met- Stanley
vhispcred gleefully. "I had to stop
6 n my way home to tell you. I got
I'.y promotion today."
; "Good." Rue's soft red lips were
(nirscd up to frame the words al
most silently. Her brown eyes were
sparkling. "Oh, Alec. I'm so glad
tor your sal:c. You've tried so
hard."
The young man leaned upon the
counter. "For my sake. What's the
matter vtth your sake?"
! Her brown eyes glanced warn
ingly across his shoulder. And
then the stoop shouldered man shuf
fled dejectedly, toward the rear of
the store. His gaze scarcely lifted
when young Stanley stopped him
with a greeting and briefly told the
good news, f
"So?. Everybody's having good
luck but me. Business is poor,"
mumbled the bird store's proprietor
m he shook his capped head and
shuffled on into the rear room.
"It's too bad you have to stay here
cooped up with a grouchy old man.
Wasting yoW youth, and your fine
health and spirits" Alec puffed out
his checks indignantly. "And here
1 T am ready now to take you away
.'did give yon a nice little home. Oh,
Rue!" . ' "
"I know. Alec," Rue gently pat
ted the tense-brown hand laid upon
her arm; then she shook her head
reprovingly." '."Uncle Peter is oldj
and feeble and unhappy. And lie
has no one hut me to look after
him. He was mother's favorite
brother. And I can remember him
when he was so different before his
wife died, jind his daughter ran
away. You know all his sad story.
Alec."
Already young Stanley was be
ginning to twist uncomfortably.
"Oh, yes, I've got a heart, too, Rue.
Rut what fight has your cousin"
Daisy gallivanting around the coun
try with some third rate show while
you're taking care of her father?"
"Ye haven't heard of her for
yeara. And Uncle Peter is proud,"
said Rue. "Yort know how pretty
sf:e was. Alec. You've seen her pic
tures. I hope no harm has come to
her."
, "Trust a girl like that to look out
for Number one." Alec pulled him
self together and smiled at Rue.i"AlI
right, little one. But don't keep me
waiting till I get old and grouchy
like Uncle Teter."
Renewed joy in his business pro
motion came with the morrow when
Alec Stanley' took up his advanced
duties for the daily newspaper on
which he was engaged.
And one morning late in the sea
son, Alec went over the papers on
his desk with a thrill of elation. His

reportorial assignments covered a
western senator who was visiting
the city, a rising woman lawyer
who ha.d won a favorable verdict
in a sensationally unique case, and
a young woman of the dramatic
profession who was suddenly lifted
out of obscurity by her engagement
to a reputed millionaire from the
Pacific coast.
This last person gave young Stan
ley considerable difficulty, but a
meeting was finally secured.
Dazzling blond and an exotic pic
ture in a Mandarin coat of rose
and gold, with a toy dog tucked
under one arm, capricious Marguer
ite Venn alternately smiled and
pouted at Alec Stanley as he dip
lomatically conducted the interview.
"You'll make the most of' my
humble little career, won't you?"
she coaxed. "And take any of
these photographs vou like. This
one is Mr. Archihold's favorite," she
added with a girlish simper.
Alec looked from the pictures to
the pretty, blase face of Marguerite
Venn. There was a puzzling famil
iarity about this shallow blond beau
ty. He searched his memory; then
as his look cleared and Sharpened,
he swung forward abruptly. His
eyes held hers steadily. He spoke
in low, stern tones.
"And what shall I say of your
father. Miss Venn? The broken old
man who still looks for his daugh
ter's return?"
The young woman swiftly paled
beneath her make-up. Her big blue
eyes flared wikllv.
"You are Daisy Yenablc. aren t
you?" relentlessly pursued the re
porter. "Ah, 1 knew it! Your cous
in Hue told me about vou."
"Rut who are you?" stammered
the other.
"1 am the man who wants to mar
ry Rue. Hut she is taking care of
your father. Do you know his heart
is breaking for you? He is trying
to earn his living in his little bird
store. But without Rue"
"Wait. I can't understand." The
young actress was as rosy now as
she had been palp before. "Really,
Mr. Stanley, I thought my father
was well and comfortable."
"He loved vou." said Alec simply.
And he was glad to see tears in the
big blue eyes as he talked on. At
last the actress flung out her hands
with a Cry of protest.
"I'm not as wicked as you seem
to think I am, Mr. Stanley," faltered
Rue's truant cousin. "I intended to
come back when I made good. It's
awful the way time goes, isn't it?'
Later than day, Rue saw her
fiance alight from a smart coupe
in front of the store and assist a
brilliant blond woman to the door.
Then he withdrew to the curb.
"Daisy 1" cried Rue, incredulity
and astonishment mingled in the
greeting. And the other swept for
ward impulsively, enveloping her
cousin in a perfumed embrace.
"That young man of yours found
me and brought me here. He is a
terrible young man! I should not
want to marry him." The visitor
laughed gayly. "1 am going to
marry a very rich man. You will
read about it in the papers. But
where is father?"
At a gesture from Rue, she passed
on to the dingy rear room. A few
minutes later she called Alec Stan
ley from the curb. .
"In that story of yours say that
Marguerite Venn found her father
in a very romantic way. Put in a
few heart throbs, will you? And say
lie is going to live in her new home,
the grand Archibold home, in Cali
fornia." Even as he listened, Alec's eyes
were searching for Rue, standing
back in the shadows with her Uncle
Peter. And the bird store's pro
prietor looked straighter and
stronger and happier than the young
man had ever seen him. And Rue,
too, was beaming with happiness.
"It's a good storv." r,rn-"nmced
Alec Stanley. "A corking good
story!"
