Chicago Tribune-Omahaj Bee 1-eased Wire. Chicago, Nov. 28. "Stung by a bunch of hicks, and stung good and proper, is the lamentation arising lrom the ranks of law-breaking sa loonkeepers, "soft drink" parlors and cabarets, who find themselves firmly in the clutches of the law with bed eral Judge Landis at bat. When Judge Landis and Attorney General Brundage of Illinois, took hold of the liquor situation here, things were running wide open. The saloons and bootleggers were so busy stealing and distributing tkeir poison dope that they had little time to show even their contempt for the law and its officers. Assistant District Attorney Mid dlekauff was ordered by Mr. Brund age to get the situation in hand and pick up evidence for prosecutions. Middlekauff resides in Freeport, but he got right on the job. About three weeks ago there be gan to drop into the law-breaking saloons and cabarets, groups of "Hicks," plainly country men and boys, in with a load of cattle or hogs, or some other errand, and willing to devote a few hours to seeing -the cily. Usually they would arrive m groups of four tnd the city "Slick ers" arid the smart bartenders had much sport with them. In many cases they were able to secure a bot tle of the contraband to "take back to Podunk or some other city, by heck, to show Jim or Bob or Ike that Chicago was ladling out the real stuff, by heck." The result is that the government has ample evidence against all these saloons. 1 lie Micks were, m real ity country men, but they were smooth workers and did their work thoroughly. Most of them were deputy sheriffs and sheriff. Albion Community Club Wires Protest To Governor Harding Albion, Neb.. Nov. 28. (Special.) The Albion Community club has sent Hie following telegram to Gov ernor Harding of the Federal Re serve board at Washington: "Our country is full of corn, oats, immature pigs and partly fattened cattle. Your board is insisting that farmers sell these products to re duce existing indebtedness. Thconly salable croduct is com at 40 cents and oats at 33 cents per bushel. A, sale at this price will not pay tne cost of raising the crop and will not liquidate any indebtedness, but will simnlv force the croDS into the hands of speculators and a very Ihis means that general oannruptcy will follow "We earncsriy urge your board to declare that an emergency now ex. ists and to arrange for credit ex tension to farmers so that some of the existing indebtedness can be paid out of the proceeds of the present crop. - , "Your board outlined a policy last spring to bring down prices, and hisofar as prices of farm products are concerned you have certainly more than accomplished your purpose. "If your board would bring pres sure to make a decent market our farmers woud gladly sell their prod ucts." Chicago Police Seek Niece of Late Jake Hamon, G.O.P. Leader Chicago, Nov. 28. Ve cause lie had in his platform a plank promising to marry sonic (air voter if the newly enfranchised women would cast their first ballots for him. State Senator-elect li. V.. lYnzel is probably the busiest ilotluer totlay of all the newly-elected oliice hold ers beset by patronage seekers. Found literally Swamped amid a small deluge of delicately perfumed love rioter, of all shapes, sizes and colors, Senator-elect l'eiurl was asked iust what he was going to do about keeping that campaign prom ise. He's Bewildered. I "I can't say anything just now; I 1 am bewildered by the large number of applicants, and it will take time lor me to decide," he answered. "It isn't a question now of finding who f can get for a wife, as 1 figured during the campaign, but a manor of whom I must choose. 'Over whelmed' is not a word sufficient to explain my position now." And( the senator-ehct systemati cally slit oncn pink and blue and lavendar tinted envelopes, carcfullv read them, indexed them and neatly arranged them for future attention. Many Scented Notes. "What kind of ? a girl will vou pick" thci correspondent queried. If will never know, he answered. "until I see the one for inc. I had no idea 1 Would have such a chance to pick one. I thought it would h" a question of who I could find. Aou it seems to be a matter of wiio will pick me." . Some of the letters were written in a joking manner, some appeared to be half' . serious, some were frank proposals of marriage, even going so far as to outline the financial ad vantages enjoyed by the writters, some offered only love, others offer ed property and wealth. Some were from girls apparently in their 'teens and others appeared to have been written by fair voters of more ma tured age. All frankly avowed they had voted for Penzel. A great many of the letters also were applications for jobs at the state capitol. "It is rather strange, isn't it," Penzel queried, "that women outnumber the male applicants for state positions by two to one?" ' "Pink Tea" Campaign. Penzel made it a point to attend every gathering of women where a man was permitted during the pre election fight, and he openly prom ised to marry if the returns showed him the winner. He attended every affair from a dance to a church so cial, it is said. "I have just two aspirations in life," he declared in his speeches. "One is to be elected to the office of state senator and the other is to get married. "I feel eligible for both positions." He added that if elected he would take a wife with him to Jefferson City for the first session of the leg islature. Penzel, although a republican, won by a 5,400 plurality in the Twenty first district, normally' democratic by 800. Seventy-five per cent of the women m his district voted avowed, and he modestly added thtit he believed 65 per cent of them cast Their ballots for him. Anyhow, pol iticians attribute his great plurality to something more than the nation wide republican landslide. Bachelor of Thitry-five. Penzel is thirty-five years old and a bachelor of the type that the fem inine sex would probably consider Twcntv - iirst senatorial district were .inclined to regard renzei s marriage.
