repeatedly in Walt street during Uii
week's persisten,' and heavy declines
in all the markets, that something
must have happened in the business
community of which the public bad
not learned. As a matter of fact
nothing had happened, or was hap
uening, except what any intelligent
watcher of the business situation
should have knoVn more than three
mouths ago. It was then clearl
apparent what kind of situation had
teeen created by the frenzied spec
ulation which had been pursued for
a year on the basis of widclv
extended credit, and which had beem i
continued up to the very moment
when the banks had to take in sail
and when the consuming public snd
ccnly stopped buying.
There was a more or less preva
lent idea that UV awkward conse
quences had been averted at that
time by a quick response of the
mercantile community to the federal
reserve board's warnings, and no
they might have been, if merchants
and producers generally had recog
nized and accepted the situation.
Unfortunately the belief was wide
spread that the reserve board was
exaggerating the matter, that prices
of merchandise which were falling
in the spring because of the ti lit
money would advance again in the
autumn because of curtailed pro
duction. Business concerns which were then over
extended and which would not get their
loans renewed, had to sell their goods n
once; every bodv saw the evidence of that,
liquidation In midsummer, not only in the
"million dollar clothing sales," but lu
the host of retail shops, which had sud
denlv come Into existence, offering stand
ard goods at heavy reductions, But this
represented only the Helling which could
not be deferred. Other large accumula
tions of merchandise were stubbornly
withcld from market In the hope of
better nutuinn business. Even the man
ufacturers postponed, their "spring an
nouncements." for weekB beyond the cus
tomary date. When these large pro
ducers gave no hop of anything but
much lower prices, the holders of the
unsold blocks of merohnndlso knew that
further delay on their own part whs
Impossible. The events of thn last fori -night
and especially of the past week,
have been the quite inevitable consequence.
Klectlon Influences Mnrkets.
Persistence In the Idea of a return to
the old high prices has been costly.
It was remarked last week that Ihe
election had Influenced the drygoods mar
ket, but only because holders of mer
chandise who ought to have liquidated
long ago, stick to their position beraus"
things were "hound to be better after
the election." thus leaving an accumu
lated selling pressure to occur when the
hope was disappointed; that the grain
growers' propaganda for $3 wheat did in
fluence the grain market, but only be
cause of the belief instilled that our
farmers would dellberatoly sacrifice their
own trade to Candad. and that the night
riders nnd the conventions did influence
the cotton market, but only because of
apprehHMun that. If the marketing of
cotton vee actually checked, the southern
