Charming Sentiments Are Inscribed on the Tea Set TT IS a pity that .we housewives cannot decipher the charming senti- ments inscribed on our own tea sets, which we selected for their attractive shape or coloring. Could We but read the vertically written message on the bottom of teapot or teacup we might be pleased to learn that the piece was made in the "studio of deep peace" or the "hall of tranquility" or the "hall of respectful law," or the "center of generous harmony'.' or in some other quaint and peaceful spot, safely hidden from the confusion of the world's critics. i s ' 1 It almost seems worth while to master the Chinese language in order to become better acquainted with our tea things. - A Chinese sage says: "A true teapot should be individual and small so as not to disperse . the bouquet. The pot should be shallow, with a well fitting cover, con : vex inside, and straight spout that cannot become clogged." Does your pet teapot meet these requirements? Now real Chinese tea made in the pot by the Chinese is done : this way: I I . .. i. . . Warm the pot and measure into it four teaspoons of vour favorite brand of tea, adding a teaspoonful of dried lotus petals or a bit of dried orange peel, then pour in the boiling water just enough to fill the pot. Let the tea steep threeminutes;' then strain it off into another n P? ,an 11 reaay to serve. - P"1 tea3 tea dances or crushes are unknown1 in China, where the tea room in the home is a sma11 room simPy bnt artistically decorated, accommodating not more than five persons. The guests enter the tea room roji which is designed to break connection with the outside world, thus fitting one's mind for the tea ceremony. A Chinese teakettle sings well, because pieces of iron are so placed in the bottom as to produce a weird melody as the water boils. In its melody a cataract echoes, a distant sea breaks on a rock-bound coast, a rainstorm sweeps through a bamboo forest, and the pines jing on a far away hill all these are heard in the teakettle by the oriental ear. The steam from the spouy, well that carries the wishes of the tea drinkers to the ears of the gods that grant them. An unwritten law is that the tea room must be scrupulously clean as becomes the "abode of fancy." The simplicity, almost bareness of the room, leaves each guest free to furnish it, and to people it as fancy dictates during the mystic silence of the tea drinking. : Tea drinking is one of "the homiest and most intimate of Bocial functions. We Anerieans watched our. English cousins enjoying the fad, as we called it, long before we adopted the custom. So-called tea rooms have never captured the tea spirit, which only presides over the home tea tray where exquisite harmony prevails. European porcelain is as a thing of. yesterday compared to the an tiquity of Chinese porcelains. The Chinese have an exquisite sense of color and of des'gn, which is apparent even in the cheaper Wares sent hcre and .which most of us own, and we can well conceive how much more beautiful the court porcelains made in Ching-Ti-Chan,' the me- tropons oi tne cermais worm musi and vour -teapot may have on it New Yeafr procession with the paper friendly carp, or perhaps a raging to safety.
