Hugh Grantland's tone was icy as he towered above the man whom I knew only as "Tim." He had given me only the briefest of nods when he hadppeared so abruptly in the doorway of Betty Kane's kitchen,' and ther crept Over me the snubbed-little-girl feeling which I often experience when the officer is intent upon some business. Maj. Grantland has more than most men what Dicky terms a "single track mind," and I saw that in this instance the track was a particularly narrow gauge one. , ' Tim threw me a beseeching glance. '"T wasn't no harm, major." he said, shrinking from the tall officer, whose long, sinewy hand was out stretched toward his coat collar. "The hdy'll tell you it wasn't no harm." "That makes no difference." The hand was tightened on the coat col lar now. "You had your orders from me. You have chosen to violate them. Now you will lake the con sequences. Come along." For a panic-stricken second or two I thought Maj. Grantland meant to inflict physical punishment -upon the man before my eyes. Then I saw that he was simply, impelling him toward the door, and I guessed that the destination of the luckless taxi driver was the nearest jail. I had surmised before that the secret of Huch Grantland' hold over the man was the knowledge he probably possessed of Tim's peccadilloes Curiously enough, in the actual con summation of the thing (he had feared, Tim appeared to Moe the terror of Hugh Grantland which he had exhibited all through his inter view with me. "I guess I'm the goat, all right, all rieht," he said, with rough bravado. Omaha Women Who Have Met Anna Case Like Her Simplicity, A number of Omaha women are looking forward . to the coming of Anna case, soprano, inursoay even ing at the Brandeis in a concert u na iler the auspices of the Tuesday Mu sical club. "So she, too, had something on you!" he said grimly. "Well, that explains things somewhat." He paused a moment reflectively, then sooke shrarrjlv. . "Where is the letter? Give it to. me " - . . "I don't thin,k Lnced to tell you to stav there," he said meaningly. "You don't." Tim answered dryly. I braced myself for the demand I was " sure would come next from Hugh Grantland's lips. And I was not mistaken. He strode toward me, towering above my ehair, holding out his hand. "I cannot tell you how humiliated I am that thi? thing has happened." he said. "I gave you my word that you should not be subjected to my annoyance because of that woman and here you have actually been givJ en a letter from her. Let me have it please, and I will deal with the matter." y Thankful, .indeed, was I that when he had entered the room I had swift ly, unobtrusively crushed the letter into a pocket in my gown.
