"Let "hint who is without sin among you cast thc'first'Stone," Mr. Kathbun rsaid to the , Jurors. He asked them to remember that the only exact evidence of the shooting of pr. "Dr. Tetlow came to his end through his own act,'' Mr.1' Rath huji said. "He had himself to blame. He iforced his attention on this wo man. Me refused to break with her. He, laughed at her threat to kill herself." , Prosecutor Hull made a, bitter at tack on Mrs. Kenyon, charging her with playing to' the, emotions ot-the jury witn meionramauc Dy-piay in ' the court room. r . , "It is no wonder she nas never faltered in. her story stje,' has built up," he shouted." " 1 ' "These things I nave learned: ." "1. Be true to yourself and it fol lows as day follows darkness, you can be false .to no man. But it is not easy for a mother to be true to herself. Her life belongs to her chil dren She surrenders it to them, at their birth. She must take care to brln no sorrow upon the innocent Marriage Must Be Holy. - "2. Marriage is the world's hol iest custom.. But it .should never be defiled by union that does not come of living, lasting and exclusive love. I cannot believe that after all I have suffered that love, real and pure, is even sin. But life has taught me that it is a sin against the m nocent to follow love's dictates out of wedlock. ' . "There comes back my first rule of life, broken with my first mar- riage, a union of impetuous vouth and moonlight, its fragments left to pierce my feet the rest of life s journey. know now that it is better to beg alms , in the street than to marry where that great love . of which I speak is wanting. " .... " "But what is a mother with two babies in arms, two little mouths to feed; what is such a mother to do ' when the protection of a good man's 'name, the- shelter -of a good man's arms are offered her? "Neither Mr. Kenyon nor I shut our , ryes to the truth of our mar riage. I was happy with the happi ness that comes of warmth, comfort, relief and rest. Then later this great - love, this passiotvof mylife fell upon me. , I was not free to accept it, yef my heart could not withstand it. "Torn with conflicting emotions - - for years, at last I felt myself drawn - to my husband. My nature, wiser than man, had played its cards. After 11 years a new little lite was to be born, the child of our lawful union "3, Motherhood, God's boon to womankind, the love that transcends all other mortal love, that is life s rec ompense. Its spell -was upon me T must give up that other love. My life was mine no longer.' I must purge myself for his coming. "In my loneliness and pain ook long walks trying to bring myself back to a belief in - life's Furposefulness. Night f after night found myself kneeling at the little altar at St. Michael's church in -Westerly at the feet of the virgin. I thought I had forgotten to pray, but somehow the ache-in my heart lost its sharpness When the little one came he was welcome." 4 Beware of Pitfall.' ' "4. "But life is wonderful. - Vnust understand that there, is nothing new in our failure. They are the. same old sorrows the world had known since it was born. ,"I say these things when my heart is broken and when I feel that in all the world there is no place far enough away for me to-hide. But I know it is cowardly to feel so And if a new. chapter is left me I will go to some place where I am not known and with my noble hus band and my wonderful boys I will try to live it worthily and healthier because of the grief I have brought them." . .
