How The President Is' v Elected ' Compiled fur Ta (ioed Cltliaahl Bu reau a I 1M nonioi usa vwnwaw By Anna Stese Richardson. 1. When will I voteifor the pres ident of, the United States?- Answer: On November 4th, 'im A presidential election iiheld every fourth vear on Tuesday following the first Monday of November. If November 1 falls on luesoay, tne election will not be held tintil the following Tuesday. November bth. 2. VV I find the anme ot my presidential candidate on the bal lot? Aitcutnf v- nua lv at the very top of heading of the ballot, under ycur party emblem. 3 Shall I put any marn auer mi name? Answer: No. This might disqual ify your ballot. You vote or place a cross after the names of presi dential electors only. In some states vou must place a cross after the iinnie of each elector on the ticket, and these electors constitute your representation in the electoral col lege. In oth.er spates, a single cross or mark indicated on the ballot, constitutes your, vote for the entire rlorrnral trroim. 4. What is the electoral coueger It is, a bodv of electors chosen by voters through the ballot or direct vote on iovemDer o choose or elect in turn the presi dent and vice-president of the United States. s 5. How many electors constitute this electoral college? innvr' v?i There are as many presidential electors as there are rep- reseniatives in tne v. j. ,uhsic3, both houses combined. At Wash ington, there are 435 in the house and 96 in the senate. " 6. How many of these 531 electors will I vote? , Answer: For as manyas you have representatives' iu Washington from your state. ' If you have three in the house you will vote tor nve presidential ' electors, besides the three men in the 'house of represen tatives, you have twq senators. 7. iiow is tnis numDcr ccier mined? ,"' ' Answer: Bv oooulation. Every state is entitled to two, IT., S. Sen ators, but its number or represen tatives in the lower house is settled by its population. Thus while Ore gon, a sparsely populated state, has two senators and only three repre sentatives in the U. S. Congress, New York, with its dense popula tion has the same number of sen ators, ,two, but 43 representatives in the lower house. So in the electoral college, Oregon lias five electoral votes atid New York has 45. a How do I know that the, men T vnfe for nf send to the electoral college will vote for my candidate? Answer Because thev reoresent your politicar party and pledge them selves to voteuor us nominee wnen elected. 9. When do the presidential elec- tnre fneer ? ' Answer The presidential electors in each state will meet at their re- cnerrive state ranitnl nn the second Monday of January following the November election, falling for this presidential election on lanuary iu, 1921. 1ft Who counts their votes? Answer The . president of the ITniterl .States senate, in this oarticu lur rase. Vice President Marshall. The sealed ballots will be sertt to ln'm hu trie electoral rnllese. and On the second Wednesday in February following, that is on Wednesday, February 9, 1921, in the presence of the ITniterl State senate .and the house of renresehtatives. meeting in joint session, ne win count xne Bal lots. The nominees for president the constitution established the' elec toral college and no better method for electing the president has been devised as yet?. 13. Why was this method chosen by the makers of the constitution? Answer The makers of the con stitution were grave and cautious men. They had just passed through a period of stress and viblent polit ical differences. . They wished to surround the choice of presidents with every safeguard and dignity. Direct voting for the president might lead to injudicious nominations, h?,t on4 undue excitement. At yfirst the framers of the constitution thought that the presiaenr snouio dc chosen by the United States con gress, but in time they realized that this might mae the president a mere to.ol in the hands of the men who chose him. Only after a long debate was the electoral system de vised by the framers- of the constitu tion. For a time after the constitu tion was adopted state legislatures selected the presidential electors, fenerally from their own bodies, his method gave the people no di rect vote in the choice of president, and by state vote the plan was so changed that voters now select pres idential electors just as they elect elective officeholders, national, state or local. Only within recent' years has this same method of direct elec tion been, employed in electing United States senators. ' By vhe present i method each presidential elector Jor whom you vote in the election of November 4 of this year will represent you in the electoral college. v r KHow are presidential candi-dateanominated?
