Market, Financial and Industrial News of the Day,'
Financial
Chicago Trlbnoe-Omaba Be Leased Wit.
New York. Oct. 19. Professional
speculators made active use today of
news affecting the markets and tran
sactions seemed to reflect iittle be
side jockeying for quick profits and
the covering of short sales. Ttis
was especially the case in stocks,
cotton and sterling exchange.
London dispatches reporting signs
of a compromise between the strik
ing coal miners and government of
ficials suDDlied excellent material tor
revising upward the quotations of
cotton futures and exchange, sterl
ine fell 2e-in the morning, thp
resultant rate of $3.40 being the
lowest since the' first week of March,
but when substantial buying orders
entered the market late in the busi
ness period, the recovery wiped out
the loss and lett the rate slightly
higher than the day before. The
movement of exchange and of com
modities sentimentally affected by
strife develooments . were hardlv
conclusive of a permanent improve
ment ,-
Much Irregularity. I .
In the atock market a great deal of Ir
regularity waa disclosed all ' the way
along, the stocks showing strength being
mainly those In which siieabl short in
terest bad been built up. Thus, the sugar
share rebounded through, expectation that
tha Cuban government and bankers here
would shortly arrange to relieve the stress
brought about by over speculstiod In sugar
and unduly expanded loans. 8hlpplng
stocks sdvanced aa did a number of the
railroads.
Bonds were somewhat more Irregular
than the day before. Traction bonda and
sharea vtere the subject of speculative
bidding on the strength of news that the
publto service commission of Pennsylvania
waa considering favorably, an application
to increaae rates from 6 to 7 cents. Thla
development waa worthy of mora than
passing Interest, perhaps, because ot em
phasis laid six months ago on the appa
rent Inability than of Philadelphia Rapid
Transit lines to return a profit at 6 cents.
Silver Attract Attention.
The persistent fall of the price of sliver
Is coming In for more attention and study
than is usually tlevotod to developments
In this mefhl. Interwined with tendencies
of commerce In the far east, a protracted
decline or advance of the metal has much
more meaning in these days of changing
market phenomena than la usually con
nected with speculative operations cen
tered In China or India. Today' ifall of
3o at New York arid 1 H pence at tondon,
carried the prices to the lowest level since
July 9,-1117. The -lowest quotation of that
year was 71 Vc so it Is clear that some
powerful forces have bean at Work to over
turn the strong position acquired by the
metal durlnar the last war year and the
subsequent period. India l reported a
heavy seller and the deduction to b made
la that Indian trade Is passing rapidly
through the reaction, being experienced by
western nations.
Wheat declined from- 6 to cents a
bushel on the ' Chicago futures market,
which have denoted fresh depression
among . holders over the refusal of the
treasury and federal reservo board to lend
special credit to the growers. But out
sid of particular Influences fwh'nd grain
market fluctuations stands tne met tnat a
large crop has to be marketed In com
petition with Increased crops abroad.
New York Cotton.
New York, Oct 19. Recovery of more
than a cent a pound In the cotton mar
ket, was shown during the early trading
hours December contracts, which . sold
off to 17.80c yesterday, advanced to 18.96c,
owing to the unexpectedly strong showing
or Liverpool ana loss acr.-ve selling by
southern Interests. Unofficial reports from
the southwest said holding of spot .cotton
waa more determined.
Stop ordets were, uncovered on the early
advance, which carried December up to
18.960 and January to 18.76c, or 106
120 points net higher.. The demand then
tapered off, and there were reactions dur
ing the middle of the day, with December
selling bark to 18.33c, or about 68 points
from the beat
Ther was renewed covering and the
market stiffened In -the afternoon, with
December 75 points net higher.
i - Htm Tork Sugar..
New Tark, Qct 19. Reports that lead
ing bonkers her would aid the financial
situation In Cuba and the recent spurt In
the demand for reffned sugar seems to be
reviving confidence In the local raw sugar
market to som extent and a little more
activity was reported today. With firm and
higher prlcea Ther wer sales of 2,700
bags of Peru for October- shipment, 160
bags of Braxillan centrifugal at 7 He. e. 1.
f., and 10,000 baga of Cubas for prompt
sblpment at 8c. c 1. f. freight, equal to
9.03o4or centrifugal, the latter represent
ing an advance of lo a pound over the
last previous sale.

Chicago Grain
By CHARLES D, MICHAELS.
Cblcaro Tribune-Omaha Bee Leased W ire.
Chicago, Oct. 19. -Grain prices
were on the'downgr'ade a great part
of the day. There were numerous
fharp rallies of short duration, but
the finish was well toward the. low
point, with severe losses. A decided
lack of confidence on the part of
buyers, coupled with an extremely
pessimistic feeling regarding the eco
nomic conditions in this country and
Europe, were the basis for the sell
ing. It was a case of finding a buyer
at times, regardless of cost of pro
duction or any other conditions.
Corn declined to the lowest price
in four years and finished with losses
of 2c to 4yic October leading.
Wheat lost 5J4c to 6c, oats l)aC, rye
lc to ZViC, barley 2c to 254c, pork
$1.10. Lard was Sc higher to 35c
lower and short ribs 25c lower.
Cash wheat prices were Sc to 6c
lower at Chicago, with premiums on
hard winter of 3c to 4c, No. ! hard
being 10c and No. 2 7jic to 8c.
Red winter premiums were not ,so
.Strong, with prices showing a loss
of the previous day's advance. Spring
wheats were 5c to 6c lower. Total
receipts of all wheat were 14 cars,
while the six markets had 1,015 cars
against 1,057 cars last year. Min
neapolis prices were unchanged, with
trade"slow. Kansas Cky dropped 3c
to 6c, St. Louis 5c to 6c.
Corn Price Break.
A bier business was on In corn with the
prices down to new low lewis, with a
break of 3 Vic to 60 from the previous day's
nose with October leifulng. January was
effered down to SO Vic. while. December
touched 82c and May 86 Vic, with the close
rn a rally of , Vio to la from the low
i'olnt bn heavy covering. Eastern bouses
were enormous tellers, a were also local
UrtTTrcsts, liquidation on stop loss orders
bi'ins; on. The buying- waa in the way of
rroflt taking by holders of bids. Export
sales were 60,000 bushels. The visible sup
liy is 8,000 bushels above an average
Buyer of corn were less anxious for
supplies and prices wer 2c .o lo lower
at Chicago, with receipts 188 cars, while
six markets had 998 cara against 723 cars
last year. St. Louis lost 2c to lc,- Peoria
2c, Kansas City 4o. Oats declined lc to 2?
nt Chicago and lc to Hjc at outside mar
kets with receipts 120 cars here and 351
enrs at th six markets againt 33, cars
last .year.
Oat Prices Slump.
Oats were under pressure with prices,
the lowest of the season for December
Commission houses led by Updike and
I.dsyls were large sellers, while the buying
was scattered. Th visible is said to be
8.0,04,000 bushels above the average, which
Is a depressing Influence. Cash prices were
cfl sharply In an marlets, with losses
ranging from c to lVic. .
Rye broke sharply with other grains,
but rallied on support from rastern In
terests, with export sales 25.000 bushels.
Cash lots we're 9c over December.
Barley had an easy tone with prices off
1 to 20 for cssh lots. Russia shipped
J60.000 bushels and th Danublan porti
Sr-0,000 bushels, mostly to the United
Kingdom.
