news affecting the markets and tran
sactions seemed to reflect iittle be
side jockeying for quick profits and
the covering of short sales. Ttis
was especially the case in stocks,
cotton and sterling exchange.
London dispatches reporting signs
of a compromise between the strik
ing coal miners and government of
ficials suDDlied excellent material tor
revising upward the quotations of
cotton futures and exchange, sterl
ine fell 2e-in the morning, thp
resultant rate of $3.40 being the
lowest since the' first week of March,
but when substantial buying orders
entered the market late in the busi
ness period, the recovery wiped out
the loss and lett the rate slightly
higher than the day before. The
movement of exchange and of com
modities sentimentally affected by
strife develooments . were hardlv
conclusive of a permanent improve
ment ,-
Much Irregularity. I .
In the atock market a great deal of Ir
regularity waa disclosed all ' the way
along, the stocks showing strength being
mainly those In which siieabl short in
terest bad been built up. Thus, the sugar
share rebounded through, expectation that
tha Cuban government and bankers here
would shortly arrange to relieve the stress
brought about by over speculstiod In sugar
and unduly expanded loans. 8hlpplng
stocks sdvanced aa did a number of the
railroads.
Bonds were somewhat more Irregular
than the day before. Traction bonda and
sharea vtere the subject of speculative
bidding on the strength of news that the
publto service commission of Pennsylvania
waa considering favorably, an application
to increaae rates from 6 to 7 cents. Thla
development waa worthy of mora than
passing Interest, perhaps, because ot em
phasis laid six months ago on the appa
rent Inability than of Philadelphia Rapid
Transit lines to return a profit at 6 cents.

New York Cotton.
New York, Oct 19. Recovery of more
than a cent a pound In the cotton mar
ket, was shown during the early trading
hours December contracts, which . sold
off to 17.80c yesterday, advanced to 18.96c,
owing to the unexpectedly strong showing
or Liverpool ana loss acr.-ve selling by
southern Interests. Unofficial reports from
the southwest said holding of spot .cotton
waa more determined.
Stop ordets were, uncovered on the early
advance, which carried December up to
18.960 and January to 18.76c, or 106
120 points net higher.. The demand then
tapered off, and there were reactions dur
ing the middle of the day, with December
selling bark to 18.33c, or about 68 points
from the beat
Ther was renewed covering and the
market stiffened In -the afternoon, with
December 75 points net higher.

last previous sale.

were on the'downgr'ade a great part
of the day. There were numerous
fharp rallies of short duration, but
the finish was well toward the. low
point, with severe losses. A decided

Europe, were the basis for the sell
ing. It was a case of finding a buyer
at times, regardless of cost of pro
duction or any other conditions.
Corn declined to the lowest price
in four years and finished with losses
of 2c to 4yic October leading.
Wheat lost 5J4c to 6c, oats l)aC, rye
lc to ZViC, barley 2c to 254c, pork
$1.10. Lard was Sc higher to 35c
lower and short ribs 25c lower.
Cash wheat prices were Sc to 6c
lower at Chicago, with premiums on
hard winter of 3c to 4c, No. ! hard
being 10c and No. 2 7jic to 8c.
Red winter premiums were not ,so
.Strong, with prices showing a loss
of the previous day's advance. Spring
wheats were 5c to 6c lower. Total
receipts of all wheat were 14 cars,
while the six markets had 1,015 cars
against 1,057 cars last year. Min
neapolis prices were unchanged, with
trade"slow. Kansas Cky dropped 3c
to 6c, St. Louis 5c to 6c.
Corn Price Break.
A bier business was on In corn with the
prices down to new low lewis, with a
break of 3 Vic to 60 from the previous day's
nose with October leifulng. January was
effered down to SO Vic. while. December
touched 82c and May 86 Vic, with the close

Oat Prices Slump.
Oats were under pressure with prices,
the lowest of the season for December
Commission houses led by Updike and
I.dsyls were large sellers, while the buying
