A muffled explosion. Burning gaso line shooting high in the air. A scream and a woman in flames dashes wildly for the stairway. Maddened by pain and terror she stumbles, and the next moment lies in a crumpled heap at the foot of the stairs. Tender hands min ister to her and smother the flames. A physician is called, who says her burns are not serious, and that he can find no broken bones, but he shakes his head over her absolute pros tration. Is it merely shock that causes her to rave so wildly? Another doctor and still another was called, but all were puzzled and the girl for she was scarcely twenty grew vio lent and became raving insane inside of a few hours. Three days passed and then came the medical verdict: We can do no more. The Lincoln asylum is the only place for her." A girl chum proved to be the "friend in need." "Please try Dr. Edwards, the chiropractor, before you consign Mary to the living death of an asylum. I'll call him if you will only say the word." As Dr. Edwards entered the house, drowded with sor rowing and sympathetic friends, he heard the girl raving about her wedding, which she imagined was the reason for the presence of so many people. She did not seem to see the doctor as he stepped to her bedside and searched quickly with skilled fingertips for the pressure he knew he would find at the base of the skull. "It is a marvel that Mary escaped instant death when she plunged down those stairs. A fraction of an inch more and her neck would have been broken. Her spinal cord is under terrific pressure. No wonder she is insane." He gave a quick movement with his hands, there was a sharp report as the spinal borie shot back into place, Mary brushed her hand across her eyes as if t brush away a nightmare, and said: "Well, who are you, and what, did you just do to my neck?" The cloud had passed as quickly as it had come. Dr. Edwards called upon her for a week until she felt strong, enough to go back to work, but from the first adjustment her mind was entirely clear. The spinal pressure had been removed so soon after her fall that results came quickly. Can't you remember the falls more or less severe you have had during your life? Think how as a child you were always getting tumbles. No wonder a perfect spine has never been found one in which every bone is in proper position so that there isn't the slightest pressure upon any nerve ! In Mary's case a severe pressure at the base of the brain caused insanity. A lesser pressure might have merely produced headaches, nervousness or eye trouble. Complete paralysis of limbs results from severe pressure in other parts of the spine, and lesser pressures cause a wide variety of dis-eases.
