6 n The Cooked Food Shop By LORETTO C. LYNCH. Now and then one comes across ' a case of some husband on the verRe of a breakdown, because his wife insists on patronizing the cooked food shop. But there are hops and shops. I am going to quote from a cooked-food shop in California, where families take evening dinner and find it delightfully satisfactory. The woman who runs this serves only luncheon and dinner. For din ner one has either the choice of a fruit cocktail or a soup, then there are three groups of food to select from You may have: Filet of sole, with tartar sauce; potatoes, escal liped tomatoes or New England boiicd dinner or lamb chop; potatoes and new corif t Then there is a choice of salads either a combination salad or a plain lettuce salad with Thousand Island dress'ng. Also a choice of tea, cof fee, buttermilk or iced tea and a choice of pie good fresh fruit pie or cake or ice cream. Now, I leave it to the average housekeeper, what would it cost to produce any of the meals you might kelect from this bill of fare, let us say, for four. Here at this cooked food shop you get a delicious dinner, well cooked, daintily served, for just 75 cents per dinner. The menu varies from day to day. There is a place for this type of shop in many more communities. Naturally, the prices will vary in different localities. But I have no ticed carefully how much better the average western housewife' looks. She looks, rested. She is not nervous, tired and semi-disagreeable like so many women who still think it an offense against society not to-make your own bread and go in for legs of roast lamb and oodles of dish washing. Dinner over at 6.' Think of the time left to talk politics with one's husband or take a ride out in the open or-help on?'s children with school lessons. Of course, you get tired of eating out. Then you go back to home cooking with real zest The trouble seems to be that most conscientious women keep house in tensively until they drop in their tracks Then the husband and chil dren are neglected and much ex- ' pense is incurred. Try it, Patronize the cooked food shops once in a while. It isn't nearly the crime of extravagance some would have us believe. Perfume Fashions .Of the Present Day Hour Perfume has come back. No longer can .one prove oneself a woman of delicate breeding by turn ing up one's nose al perfumed per sons. For everyone is using per fume nowadays. Women who never bought a dollars' worth before in their lives are now paying as much as $100 for small crystal vials con taining weird scents from Paris. "The simple flower odors of a by gone age are no longer in vogue, now that everyone has a soul and complexes," according to the head of one of the great perfume houses. Violet and sweet lavender, lily of the valley and lilac, and all such ob vious old-fashioned odors are not in 1 6&e HARDMANl H nnm 'nn r rr nn ivrrv f $1300 Caruso is only one of the' great! New York (Special corre spondence.) "What is the dif ference between a blouse and a waist?" asked a country woman the other day. The answer is simple. A waist is some thing that you put on a t blouse is something that puts you on. If a woman wants a good stage direc tor, something that will take her out of the mere featured by some of the smartest shops. This is chorus of dress, all she has to do is to select an orig inal and, charming blouse. Among the fall and winter blouse models duvctyn is nowadays often combined with silk sleeves, an ar rangement which eliminates the bulkiness under the coat sleeve which has always been an objection to blouses of this character. The above model declines any aid from the outside, however, save the Do You Know IV Three Questions a Day for the Housewife. 1. Why are rice eating races not bread eaters? 2. Economy Implies More Than Saying Economy implies far more than merely saving. In fact, first of all, it implies careful management of one's resources, whether of money or commodities, of time or energy. Waste of energy often arises from lack of skill, and lack of skill results sometimes from failure to attach to little tasks the importance they de serve. When an efficiency expert undertakes to perfect a business sys tem he gives perhaps more thought to minor operations than to major ones. The conduct of a business or of a home requires the correlation of almost infinite details into a unified plan, and it is obvious that the sur plus of energy available for the plan's main object will be large or small in proportion as there is an intelligent application or a compara tive lack of skill and system applied to its separate details. Home management requires the subordination of many minor tasks, so that not only physical energy but mental and spiritual as well may be saved for the bigger things that de termine the happiness of the family. For five years the Super-Six has been the world's largest selling fine car. In eighteen months Essex sales made an unmatched record. What must now be the demand for them at these bedrock prices? But labor and material shortages in early summer had forced reductions in schedules for fall and winter and now the return to normal in prices assures such an immediate increase in sales that a scarcity of Hudson and Essex cars seems certain. Choose your car now and learn how the price reduction increases its attractiveness. And remember that in either Hudson or Essex you obtain exclusive motors, for they are patented.
