16 THE BEE: OMAHA, SATURDAY. OCTOBER 2, 1920 - " 1 1 ' " 1 " ' ' Girls, Please Mind the 'aint ! D. . By BEATRICE FAIRFAX. "To gild refined gold, to paint the To throw a perfume on the violet. To mooth the ice of add another ' hue Unto the rainbow, or with taper- To leek the beauteous eye of heaven . to garnish, Is wasteful and ridiculous excess." Now that I've quoted Shake speare, I'd like to add the testi mony of a modern man on this sub ject so interesting to us all and so much li and before the public eye nowadays. When I lift my weak feminine voice, I am sure to be greeted with a number ot protesting and unin tentionally amusing letters from 20-year-old miss who assures me that I know nothing of. life nor yet of men. I am assured that the thing to do is "to grab off a little fun while the going is good." Or in equally beau tiful language I'm reminded that "you're only young once I" and the thing to- do is enjoy yourself in spite of the stupid opinion of older people. v . If only youth could be made to realize that youth is too precious to squander. If only it, would believ that the time to lay up treasures is when they may be had for the tak ing. If it could see that "durabl satisfactions" last and that the chean ami tawdry attraction of the mo ment does not lead anywhere. Bui let us ignore all the deeper questions today and stick to our paint 1 Also let us cling to the voice of masculine prophecy. With due thanks to the editor who Wrote it. I quote an editorial I found among my clippings, and can not ascribe to any particular source beyond acknowledging my indebted ness to some clear-thinking and fair minded man. Says he who shares Shakespeare's idea and expresses it a fa the fash ion of four centuries later: "The male of the human species long ago discovered it was unnec essary for him to attire himself in ay colors, knee breeches and pow dered wigs to attract the attention df the opposite sex. . The female of the species, however, still believes that personal adornment is the im portant thing. Up to a certain point, of course she is right. Men like good looks, but as a matter of fact men prefer not to know how results are attained." (Girl, please note this feminine insistence on "gilding the lily." I'm one of you, after all, you seel) "But there is little beauty in the powder puff and rouge pot and neither is there mystery," our mas culine authority goes on. "Powder that is more than visible and paint that garnishly proclaims itself can add nothing to charm. A distressing phase of the matter Is that the worst offenders are those who need no artificial aids to beauty. The woman who seeks to gain the appearance of youth may be excused, perhaps; but the girl who hides her youth ful skin with layers of talc deserves only pity. She will need thicker powder and heavier paint a few years from now." There's no gettinsj away from the facts in the case. An ugly complex Ion won't take rouge. The red stands out in blotches. It announces Its artificiality, and it doesn't bright' en up but emphasizes the ugliness it can't conceal. A good complexion is likely to be spoiled by rouge irr- time. I see nothing immoral in a touch of pow der to a shiny nose. Please don't misquote me as standing by the blue laws of bygone centuries and want ing to punish anyone who smooths down shine with soft dustings of clean powder. And don't fancy I condemn as wicked and terrible any one who tints her cheek with pink or rose to give the semblance of "the bloom of youth." It's generally done so badly. Folks who persist in making up make up to look a bit circus-clownish. The garish and badly blended artificial colors aren't half as pretty as the 11 Sto Milk For Infants & Invalids COOKING Tha "Food - Drink" lor All Ages. Quick Lunch at Home, Office, art Fountains. Summer Home Near Chicago i Now Camp A former summer estate of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Vanderlip at Piano, 111., near Chicago, is now a summer camp for Chicago "teen age" girls, directed by the Y. W. C.
