The strength of railroad shares in today's dealings was sufficient to turn the industrial stock list from an unsteady position to one of firmness in the last hour of business. The upturn occurred under a volume of trading some what larger than the day before and considerably in excess of ..the' indif ferent markets of last week.' Union Pacific recovered its quar terly dividend, the payment being de ducted from the quotation at the start, and strong gains were re corded by Great Northern preferred, Lackawanna, Reading, Southern Pa cific, New Yoi'k Central and others of the more prominent group, the advances in some cases running well in excess of a point. There ap peared, however, to be more insis tent speculation among the non-dividend paying shares and railroad bonds were' in substantial demand. Cull Money Easier. The general Improvement of the after noon reflected a rather unexpected ease ment of the call money rate fiom 8 to 7 per cent and the market tone of the en tiro session appeared to be stiffened r.y observations on credit conditions coming from the federal reserve board -and local banks. The reserve board, in its monthly business survey, detected signs of Improve ment, with Indications that the' transition Krlod from indifferent to better business was In sight. The banks which' issue monthly discussions of credit and busl ress, felt that the autumn demands would be met without undue strain. The ease ment of the demand loan rate occurred at a time when the Mreet had tbougltt the month end shifting of funds, inci dent to corporation payments, might bring a rate, as high at least, as any recn in the last fortnight. Among the stocks which failed to prorit much from the broad advance elsewhere were motor issues and shares allied with them. Steel trsdo, reviews of tho week note that steel inakersservlng the auto mobile trade are adjusting their produc tion to other business with the result of some Irregularity or output. Tr;e steel industry is finding transportation condi tions gradually growing better, which has aided in reduction of accumulations of finished materials and In a rather freer movement of mw materials nnd fuel than a month ago. The process of distributing now freight charges over seel prices has evidently not made much progress, with tfc result of a quiet state of new buy Consumption Main Factor. The cotton market disclosed in Hs move ment of the day that actual crop con siderations are liavingless influence upon prices than reports ot consumption at Jiome and abroad. The government's reports on the growing crop today showed a condition 67"4 per Mnt, which was more bullish than the Scomposlte trade opinion had made It in advance, yet there was a heavy decline of quotations in the futures , market in the sfternoon. The federal percentage was fully B per cent lower than the most optimistic prln'.ed estimate of th3 week and the estimated yield of 12.783,000 bales stood well below the preliminary guess of the trade. The foreign exchange market was dis tinctly dull and rates were hardly changed at all from Tuesday's last quotations. Tho pressure of commercial bills has slackened considerably this week, and according to dealers, speculation appears unwilling to take a chance on possibilities of the next few weeks. It Is possible that announce ment of terms for the disposal of France's portion of the Anglo-French loan maturltv will lend an important lanuwe iuu,,i the shaping of exchange movements In succeeding months. 6y CHARLES D. Aside from the strength in those grains there was a heavy un dertone with a decline and close at the lowest' prices of the season for the deferred futures of corn with losses of 1 3-8c while September lost 2 l-8c. Oats lost 3-8 to l-2c on the distant futures and l-8c on Septem ber. DeDliveries were 41,000 bu shels oats on September trades by E. V. Wagner and Co. j Exporters were large buyers of December wheat and sales in all positions were around 1,500,000 bu shels, France, Italy and Germany buying mostly at the gulf. Prices dipped 3-4 to lc early; Only to ad vance 2c. from the previous day's close and finish 1 l-4c to 1 l-2c from the top with December $2.35 and March $2.30 3-4. Movement Falls Off. Cash offerings ore disappointing and the primary movement showed nearly 100,000 bushels below a week ago and 1,407,000 bushels below last year's, while export clearances wero 1,363,000 bushels against 766,000 bushels last year. Spring wheat crop estimates have been reduced around 16,000,000 bushels from last month as shown by private reports which may be evercome by Increased yields ot winter wheat in the flnnl re turns. Cash premiums hold and mills ara buying more freely. No frost was reported In any section of the corn belt over night and with bear ish sentiment- and --general commission houpe selling prices declined readily and the finish was about the low point. Some of the pit element made an effort to rally the deferred deliveries, but failed to get outside support and the finish was with a heavy undertone.
