An irregular price trend and dull periods in stocks today told of a hesitant and cautious attitude on the part of the traders. There were more advances than declines, however, in the final array of quotations and selling pres sure was not evident, except in the first quarter-hour. It looked as though additional short lines were put out in early trading, particular ly among industrial shares, but these failed to bring response elsewhere and considerable short stock was covered later. The trading evo was still directed townrd atfnirs in wtsiern Euroyo, but it could not be determined whether tho In tervention of France In behalf ot the South Russian forces flghtliig the bol shevistB was an event llkly to alter the Russian outlook for the better, c.r bring additional complications for the allied countries. yulte likely the confusing aspect of European news was a decided tlemcnt In forcing contraction of pur chases and salea. The most positive Item, which Wall street considered, was the approach of soviet forces to tho suburbs ot Warsaw. Securltlea Blore pliable. An Indication that security pi Ices were in a position of greater stability than on Monday and the closing daya o last week was confirmed sn tho fact thai the mar ket, broke away from the path formed ty the foreign exchanges. This may have rorultod both trom ths probability that short selllug has been pressed far et.ouirh to bring its own corrective fac tcrs Into play and form a belief that speculation was the major influence In the sterling exchange market. A fall ot 5s in sterling sight draft?, following yes terday'a upturn of 4ftc, certainly did not result trom any sudden expansion of offerings ot real bills, because of a chai.ge for the worst m the European political and military outlook. Hid genuine trade developments been the guiding power tn tho sterling mar'' kct an advance might have been expected in the light of reports on British com merce In July. In that month the coun tiv's foreign trade made the best show irg of any month since the beginning of the war, exports gaining 78,000,000 pounds over July, 1919, while imports expanded only 10.000.t00 pounds. Exports of finished goods, especially of cotton cloth, to the United States, were sub stantially larger than in the same month ',u var Th excess of Imports Into England over exports was no more than 6.100,000 pounds. In July of last year the excess was nine times this amount. More Cheerful Outlook. Whether or not the relative steadiness of stocks In the last lew days has of itself caused an Improvement of senti ment over general business conditions, it was evident In market comment today that more cheerfulneas prevailed than bo fore. The thriving condition of the ateel trade disclosed in weekly surveys has had a beneficial effect, and now reports from several important automobile manufactur ing centers goes to show that the plants, while by no means under the rush of spring activities, are in the main fairly busy on orders. The reports of three porphyry copper companies for the quarter and half year ended June 30 disclosed today a material Improvement over the same periods last year, although signs of "spotty" business were , not lacking. Looking backward it seems as though the decline ot stocks since July 1 have dis counted a part of the slowing down of trade and industry which has occurred thla year and thus brought prices far along toward the depth of their de pression in the current cycle. Wheat futures swung about with con siderable rapidity on the Chicago market, ending with gains of about 6c per bushel. Corn, rye and somo provisions were higher than the day before. Cotton moved un certainly, marked by quick changes which had no great result upon quotatlona at the end of the trading period. Strength in wheat and coin were the leading fnctorj in the grain markets, with ihc close on 'vheat arouni the top at gains of 5y6c, while Septem ber corn gained 44c and December, 2'jc. Oats were under pressure from September holders and gained 'oSic while rye finished 5SrjC and barley J41Wc higher. Profes sionals did the largest part of the tuiincss. Wheat' was strong practically all day with an advance of 6 to 7c, the top being $2.45 for December and 12.48 for March. Buying was led by the Armour Grain Co. and Nye. Jenka and there was more scattered orders for 6,000 and 10,000 bushels lots than at any time since trading was revived. Export buying in the cash markets was larger, Britain and Holland leading, with the best business at the highest price of the week, show ing advances of 6 to 6c. All outside markets were higher and the news gen erally bullish. Offerings of cash grain were not large, while the primary re ceipts of 1,224,000 bushels were 314,000 bushels under a week ago and 605,000 bushels below last year's. Export clear ances were 403,000 bushels. Exports Strong. There were good exports of wheat and rye at Chicago today. Mills bought 6.000 ii'.nhels wheat, 15,000 bushels corn and 161,000 bushels oats. There were sales of 100.000 bushels wheat nt 25o over September, track, New York, also some rye, but ths uuantity and price was not given. Wheat at Chicago was 5 and 6c higher, Minneapolis 10c higher on spring wheat and 6 and 10c higher on winters, Kansas City 4c higher, Omaha 6 to 8c higher, St. Louis 1 to 3c higher. Corn was In active demand and 1 to 6c higher with the clova at the top. Peoria was 2 to 3c higher and St. Louis 6 to 7c and slow at the advance. Omah.i 2 to 4c higher. Receipts only 48 cars. Oats were taken fairly with prices at Chicago unchanged to lc lower. Out side markets were easier with larger of ferings. Rye higher with a good de mand. Advance in Corn. Septomber corn was strong with an ad vance of 11.48 to 81.63 and a close ot to e from tho top exerted a pro nounced influence on the trade, as it advance to 25 over December against 13c recently. Cash premiums advanced 8 to 16c over September, as only forty eight oars -arrived, which is not enough for the local Industries. Peoria had only fourteen cars; Kansas City ten cars, with No. 1 yellow at St. Louis 81.73 and at Chicago $1.66 to $1.67. At no time was there any particular pressure on the Sep tember, while local professionals sold December. Crop news from southwestern Argentine is less favorable. . Heavy sales of Septem ber oats by Lamson prevented tho oat market from responding to the advance in other grains, as there was little outside help and the local element were mostly against the market. At their best prloes were up to 73c, with the close at inter mediate figures. ' Rye was hard to buy, there being little on the market and It was picked up by shorts and cash houses. There was a good export business under way, over 200,000 bushels at the seaboard, with sales of spot rye there at 66c over Chicago September, Offerings were light, Minneapolis stooks have decreased 60.000 bushels this week.
