French Wheat Situation (Brussels News
wires): The following is a very Impor
tant statement on French crops and wheat
needs tor the coming stason, received by
one of the largest local export houses: The
weather conditions in France have not
been very favorable during the first half
of July and dry weather Is urgently needed.
The quality seems a good one on average,
but it Is expected that the outturn will
not be over 6,600,000 to 7,000,000 tons,
about 230,600.000 to 250,500,000 bushels,
and as the consumption Is estimated at
about 9,600,000 to 3,000,000 tons, or 90,
000,000 to 110,000,000, of which about 1.
250,000 or 40,600,000 bushels have already
been bought by the government. There
fore we have to Import at least 45,000,009
to 66,000,000 bushels and my personal
opinion is that the needs will be even
over these estimates which are given by
tho government. Crops In Algeria and
Tunis are entirely lost by heat and drouth,
and these countries will have to Import.
The government has already bought from
Spanish sellers 'Platte wheat afloat

Chicago Tribune-Omaha Iiee Leased Wire.
New York, Aug. 3.- After a pe
riod of irregularity in which some
new low records for the year were
established among industrials stocks,
the market turned about today and
left off amid a marked demonstra
tion of strength in the railroad de
partment. Great Northern preferred
scored the really remarkable gain of
5 points, while net advances of 1 to
more than 2 points were recorded
by Atchison; Chicago, Rock Island
and Pacific, New York Central,
Northern Pacific, Southern Pacific
and others.
The rise of 4 points and more by
New Haven was worthy of special
attention, for, in other directions the
more important advances were gen
erally limited -to issues of seasoned
dividends. It was probable that
when the bearish tide turned in the
afterneen, helped by a decline of call
money from 8 to 6 per, cent, a hasty
covering movement m the railsfound
little stock offered. The irregular
price tendency of the morning, with
its full quota of sharp reactions was
a fimiliar aftermath of such a fall as
occurred yesterday. Overnight mar
gin calls found numerous holders ot
long stock unresponsive and selling
orders resulted as weak orders were
cleared away.
Short Active.
The bulk of the day's buying orders
seemed to be for the purpose of retiring
short contracts. Still, demand for tbe old
line rails, once the movement got undr
way, was reported to Include an accumu
lation, to a degree, both from Investment
md speculative sources. Short covering
was especially active among the steel, mo
tor and rubber shares, the groups whlct
had beer, driven down previously under
attaflk. It would have been difficult to
have found anything outside of the call
money quotation to promote buying for
really 'constructive purposes, considering
the industrial stocks by themselves. The
passing of the American Cotton Oil alvl
dent, because the directors were unfavor
ably Impressed with the course of com
modity prices and general business con
ditions, was hardly conducive to the ac
cumulation of Industrial shares, v It was
not surprising, to. the dlght of this de
velopment, that stocks of companies en
jged in somewhat similar lines as the
American Cotton Oil company were weak.
In the afternoon recovery of the active
rails and Industrials it seemed as though
the depressing ntws from Poland was
Ignored, although it had fallen In w.sll
with the operations of professional bears
the day before. An abrupt decline of
sterling exchange was also passed by
a stock market factor, although this re
cession and the weakness of Oermnn,
French and other continental exxchanges
may have been a reflection of conditions
which sooner or later will have Influence
In the security markets.
. Sterling; Drops.
Sterling declined more than T cents
below the final price of yesterdav. Dutch
and Spanish rates, fcllowing their recent
tendency, reached levels lower than those
recorded during the war years, and It Is
significant of the changes taking place
In international trade and financial rela
tions that these exchanges, so long at a
stiff premium at New York, have reached
a slzsable discount.
While the thought of a further exten
sion, of military operations in Europe is
neturaily in the foreground of exchange
market surveys, it Is probable that com
mercial transactions are also working
against rates. The Impression prevails in
some banking quarters that France has
mr.de arrangements through, London for
meeting her Rhare of the Anglo-French
loan, and the. process may have been In
fluential In depressing francs at London
and New York in the last fortnight. If
tho allied nations wre becoming seriously
concerned over the situation In Poland
It would seem as i though the foreign
bonds on the local market would have
beer, decidedly unsteady before this.
They have fluctuated within fairly nar
row limits.

By CHARLES D. MICHAELS.
Chiracs Trtbuse-Omaka Bee Leased Wire,
Chicago, Aug. 3. A continuation
of the upward course in grain prices
which started , Monday was more
marked today.- Sensational advances
were made in wheat, which led other
grains and madea close at or near
the highest of the day, with shorts
the best buyers. Thatthe markets
were heavily oversold was clearly
shown by their action as selling pres
sure was reduced and values readily
responded to the increased buying
power which absorbed the offerings
of hedgers as values moved up.
Pneastneas over the foreign political
situation, with negotiations between Rus
sia and Poland reported as broken olf,
caused a -change of sentiment. The de
cline in foreign exchange Is regarded by
seaboard bankers as due to large sales
of bulls against export purchases and they
?ay it is not a bearish factor. At the
close wheat wa up 16817c, corn 3 0

first car of new barley arrived today and
sold at $1.08.

movement there 1s liberal, although under
last year's. Primary arrivals were 1,486,
000 bushels against 2,662.000 bushels last
year. Export clearances from' the sea
board were 380,000 bushel against 1,017,

The sharp advance n wheat futures
caused exporters to withdraw from the
market except at a relatively lower basis,
an advance of 84i12c in bids falling to
draw substantial offers. The British com
mission Is expected to be back In the
wheat market tomorrow and asked for of

The probability of a resumption of hos

disclosed a badly oversold condition In
corn, and with the strength in wheat
prices, it advanced sharply, closing at the
'"on the bulge there was a fair amount
of selling on scale orders, from traders
who covered on the recent brak, and
were reinstating their lines. Sample val
ues were 3 to 4 cents higher, with No. 3
mixed at $1.44 and No. 2 yellow at
$145 to $1.45. Receipts. Ill cars.
Shipping Bales. 71,000 bushels.
Oats FaU to Hold Cp.
Oats derived the bulk of their strength
from other grains, and failed to hold the
full advance due to profit taking by
local longs. Premiums in the sample
market advanced V4 to 1 cent, with an
excellent shipping demand, the advance
in freight rate to go Into effect on Au
gust 25 being a big factor. Receipt
were 77 cars, and reports from central
Illinois Indicate that farmers will bin a
great deal of grain, the same as they
did last year. Sample values were 2 to 3
cents higher, with shipping sales 246,000
Reports that Germany and Scandinavia
had bought 2,000,000 bushels of rye since
last Thursday and buying of futures at
