Offers Cup to Best
Omaha Girl Swimmer
What is expected to be the largest
woman's swimming meet ever held
in Omaha, js scheduled to be held
at the Carter Lake club bathing
beach, Wednesday, August 11. The
meet and diving coritests, which are
under the direction of the Carter
Lake club, are open to every wom
an and girl, in Omaha who can
swim. ,
Miss Annette Kellennan, well
known aquatic star, has offered a
loving cup to be known as "The
Annette Kellerman Loving Cup" to
the best. woman, swimmer and diver
in Omaha.
The national woman's water
championships Vill be held at Lon?
Beach some time in August, and it i
is the plan of the Carter Lake offi
cials to enter the winners of the lo
cal meet in thenational champion
ships. U. S. Should Win
America may depend upon John
ston and Tilden in their endeavor to
win the Davis cup tennis matches at
Auckland, Australia, rext L'ecember.
They are clever double players, have
till kinds of shots and with practice
will no doubt develop and blend
their individual games with the one
composite whole so necessary to the
fine performance of the real doubles
game. With Johnston's magnificent
return of the service and Tilden's
reach thev might well take the Aus
tralian players as their model and
j. lay the strikers' partner up at the
service line, thus converting the ob
solete defensive game on the receiv-
j jpg end into a Snappy offense,

Walter Hagen Beats
Jim Barnes in v Play
Off for Golf Title
reenwich, , Conn., Aug. 1. Wal
ter Hagen, French open and metro
politan golf champion, gained more
honors by defeating Jim Barnes of
St Louis in the 18-hole playoff of
the Metropolitan Golf association
championship tournament at the
Greenwich Country club. The win
ner made the round in 70, to 74 for
Barnes. ' v
Hagen now has won the metro
politan three times, including last
year. ' In 1918 he defeated Barnes '
and Charlie Hoffner in a playoff.
In the struggle both Hagen and
Barnes played brilliantly at times,
though both missed short putts. 4
Hagen got into less ditticulty, and
he practically settled all doubt as
to the final outcome by gaining a
lead of four strokes on the turn. He
went out in 36, to Barnes 40. It
was fine golf coming back, fcoth
being better than par. Their cards:
