Double Life Is Found
Dead in Chicago Hotel
Chicago Tribune-Omaha Iteo Leased Wire.
Chicago, Jul y23. Max C. Poin
dexter, an oil and real estate spec
ulator, with a wife and four chil
dren in South Haven, Mich., experi
mented with the double life and
was found at 5 o'clock this morning
with a bullet through his brain in
bed at the Lexington hotel.
In a connecting room, with a
badly blackened eye and bruises
and in a hysterical condition was
"Miss" Ora Walters of Memphis,
Tenn. Poindexter was 41 and the
woman 31 years old.
The Walters woman heard the
shot that ended Toindexter's life
and notified the hotel officials, who
immediately summoned the homi
cide squad and detectives. It is the
general belief that Poindexter, who
had recently lost heavily in specula
tions, whose health was not of the
best, and who was harried by his
illicit affair with another woman,
killed himself.
Small blood spots on one of the
pillows in the woman's room, she
said, were due to nose bleed after
Poindexter had beaten her. There
were also evidences of a hard strug
gle in the clothes closet of her room.

COMMON SENSE
Keep Within Your Means.
By J. J. MUNDY.
You confess that with your in
creased income you have found that
you are having a Harder time than
ever before to make your expendi
tures keep within your income.
But what about the things you
buy and the things you do which
you dared not think of buying and
doing when the indulgence would
have cost you muchness than at the
present time? x
Is it possible that you are letting
your desires and your tastes run
away from your good judgment.
The increased amount wheh
comes in your pay envelope has
sined so much more than you had
fownerly that you have ceased to
give your former thought to what
you spend.
Only recently, when you found
you were running behind, did you
begin to use you head to solve the
problem.
You have acquired more expen
sive desires and you fori that ypu
cannot abstain ifroni them.
But the sooner you come up
standing and realize your position
the less you have to fear in thfse
days of uncertain values. Cut ex
pense and keep within your means.

How the Geese Came Back.
''Twas this way, if you'll believe
me," sajd Mrs. McQueen. She
scratched the little pig's back with
one hand as she talked. "I was
just after churning my butter when
what should I see looking in the
door but that thief of a Tinker with
the beard like a rick of hay! Thinis
I to myself, sure, my butter will be
bewitched and never come at all
with the bad luck of a stranger,
and he a Tinker, coming in the
house!
"Bue he coip.es in and gives one
plunge to the dasher for luck an.H
to break the spell, and says he, very
civil, 'Would you be wanting to
buy any fine geese today?'
"My heart was going thumpitv
thump, but I says to him, 'I might
look at them, maybe,' and with that
I go to the door, for the sake of
ought to come to me. I've got all
the brains, but they have all the
looks. That's the way I see it.
Just look at the poor simps. They
don't know any of my dodges for
duckilig extra -work; they're boobs
enough to go looking for trouble
that I side-step, to keep snooping
around for information they don't
need in their jobs and that I'm wise
enough not to bother up my head
about and look what they fall into,
while a wise guy like me gets left
at the post!
Ask 'em wfiat's a good show in
town and they can't tell you. Start
chinning about baseball and they
haven't got time to talk while they're
working. Ask 'em to help you
frame a good excuse for being late
or sneaking a day off, and they
just look at you without' a thought
in the bean.
They're dumb as hayracks. And
look how they get aVay with it.
Why wouldn't I "knock?"

Parenh? Problems
III. Should any notice be taken
of the likes and dislikes of children
in regard to food?
Very little. Every child should
drink milk and eat green vegetables,
bread and butter, fruit, cereals and
(in case of older children) a mod
erate amount of fish and meat; and
unless these' actively disagree with
the child, eggs should be eaten.
Children can train themselves .o

WHY?
Are Jewels Used in Watches?
(Copyright, 1120, By the Wheeler
Syndlcato, Inc.)
The principal reason for the
deterioration of any piece of
machinery is because the constant-
friction wears away the
moving parts and interferes with
the regularity of the mechanism.
A watch being a machine in
which absolute uniformity of
speed Is essential; it is iiecessary
to reduce this friction to a min
imum either through constant
oiling, the use of ball bearings
or some very hard material which
will withstand the wear and tear
of the continual friction. The
first' two of these methods are
not feasible in so small a piece
of machinery as a watch, 5o .cer
tain very hard jewels are placed
at various points to counteract
the rubbing caused by the moving
Pirts.
Watches are generally
equipped with 7, IS, 17, 18, 21 or
23 jewels, the 15 and 17 jewel
types being the most popular. In
trinsically, the icwels used in the
manufacture of watches are of
little value but. from the stand
point of service and the "specific
purpose which they serve1, they
the invaluable. The jewels us
ually used in watch-malnng are
the hardest of the precious
stones, diamonds, sapphires and
rubies and, of these, the most
generally used is the sapphire,
which combines hardness with
comparatively reasonable price.

the legs of them tied together 1"
"The impudence of that !" cried
Mr. McQueen. "Get along with
your .tale, woman! Surely you never
paid the old thief for your own twe
geese!"
"Trust mel" replied Mrs. Queen.
"I'm coming around to the point of
my tale gradual, like an old goat
grazing around its tethering stump!
I says to him, 'They look well
enough, but I'm wishful to see them
standing up on their' own two legs
That one looks as if it might be a
bit lame, and the cord so tight or
it! And meanwhile, will be having
i bit of a drink on this hot day?'
"Then I gave him a sup cf milk,
in a mug, and with that he thanks
me kindly, loosens the cord and sets
the geese up on their legs for me
to see. In a minute of time I stood
between him and the geese, and
'Shoo!' says I to them, and to him
I says, 'Get along with you before
I call the man working behind the
house to put an end to your thiev
ing entirely!'
"And upon that he went in great
haste, taking the mug along with
him, but it was cracked anyway '"
"Woman, woman, but you've the
e'ever tongue in your head," said
Mr. McQueen with admiration.
"Tis mighty lucky we have,"
said Mrs. McQueen, "for it's little
else women have in this world tr
help themselves with!"
Then she put the little pig: down
in the empty pig pen in the farm
yard and went to fetch it some milk.

The ministry of Premier Grabski
