HIRAM'S FRIENDS BACK OF HARDING IN THISJTATE Secretary of Republican Club Denies Report That John sonV Supporters Are Holding Out. in reply to a statement made by Frank Harrison, who was campaign manager for Senator Hiram Johnson in Nebraska during the primary cam paign, Thomas J. Sheehan, jr., secre tary of the Harding-Coolidgc club of Nebraska, offers the following: "In the World-Herald it was noted th.t Frank Harrison of Lincoln is sued a statement in which he indi cated that Senator Johnson's friends were not included in the Harding Coolidge club of Nebraska. This was an error on the part of Mr. Har rison, for the fact is that 17 members of the executive committee were supporters of Senator Johnson and 10 members were delegates to the national convention and supported Senator Johnson in the convention. "It is the purpose of the club to be nonfactional and to work for the interests of the republican ticket without consideration of factional differences. Senator Harding dots not recognize any factions in the party and his campaign will be con ducted along broad lines of unity and harmony. "The Harding-Coolidge club lias always been open to all republicans in the state of Nebraska and will re main so. The following is a list ot the men who supported Mr. John son, 10 of whom were delegates to the national convention and sup., ported the senator therein: V. -A. Arthur Vaughan, arrived in New York City. Father Vaughan expressed surprise and indignation at the distorted version of the incident printed in several American news papers. -He asserted it was a plot to discredit Archbishop Mannix in America. He declared that the Arch bishop, while at Honolulu, mistook th e "Star Spangled Banner," which was played by an American band, for "God Save the King" and refused to stand. W. J. Hunter, city clerk, has re ceived a letter from Mrs. Carl Mil ler, who gives an address in a Rhode Island town, and writes that her husband ran away with a 17-year-old girl, whose mother is said to be dying. "Her mother is dying and her brother asked me to have a small item in the paper, as it may open het eyes and help her to come home. I heard last weejk that they were in Omaha." On the reverse side of the letter written by Mrs. Miller appears the following letter, supposedly written by the girl's brother: "Helen: Please come home Mother is dying and calls for you. Don't let her die without seeing you. She forgives you for what you have done. You have broken her heart, so 'come home and make her end happy. The married man you went with lied to you, as he has lied to his wife, and he will leave you as he .has left his wife. If ht had any respect for you he wouldn't bring shame and disgrace oi; us all. He knows he can never marry you, as he has a good little wife and baby and lifer religion won't allow a di vorce. He told you he wasn't living with his wife, but he has always lived with her. He has made a fool of you and he has disgraced his chil dren. ' "If you want money to com home, send for it at once. the United States- Department of Jus tice has located him and if they get you it will mean five years for you and ten for him. Why didn't you get a single fellow to go with and let a married man alone? You have broken your mother's heart and his wife's, so do the right thing and come home before mother dies. Your brother. HARRY." Want Volunteer to Direct Packing of Old Clothes Workers in the old clothes cam paign now on in Omaha for the Near East relief are buried in pack ing garments to be shipped. The packing is being done in the Mu nicipal auditorium, but the helpers are in need of a leader or "boss packer." The Rev. Charles W. Savidge, veteran Omaha minister, and famil iarly known as the "marrying par son," has issued a plea for some man or woman to volunteer to over see this work. Rev. Mr. Savidge gives Tyler 1212 to be called by volunteers. Omahans Smash Grand Island Flight Record Two Omaha business men made a record-breaking air trip to Grand Island yesterday in an $8,000 Oriole, Curtiss type plane, piloted by War ren Kite, of the Grand Island Aero company. ''The passengers were Dr. Clyde Roder and Lawrence Brinker of the Burns-Brinker company.- Mr. Brinker had some business to look after, while the doctor had a sisfc call. They naad-; the trip to Grand Island in an hour and 40 minutes and returned in an hour and 30 minutes. Silver Jumps Two Pence on Brisk London Buying Market London, July 21. These plans, submittedby 13 of the country's best architects, arc valued at $150,000, and, according to Alan McDonald, president ot the Ne braska chapter oi the American In stitute of Architects, the display will be the best of this nature ever shown in the west. Among the drawings are those of B. (5. Goodhue, architect under the state capitol commission, and of three Nebraska architects. In order that children ma have a chance to see the drawings, they will be held here until after the opening of school. An explanatory address will be delivered on .the opening night of the exhibit by T. R. Kimball, president of the Ameri can Institute of Architects. It is planned to show the drawings in other towns ' f the state after the exhibit here. Country Store Dance on Bill at Lakeview Park The management of Lakeview park will stage a country store dance tonight. This event is the source of much fun for the old as well 4ts the young. Prizes to be given out at the country storen the big dance palace will range from a pair of boy's suspenders to an armload of groceries. The capital prize, which wili be held until the last dance, will be a beautiful elec tric lamp and shade. Barn dancing will be one of the features, and extra prizes will be given for those who participate in this portion of the entertainment. , The crowning event of the season is to be the public marriage of two well known Omaha people. This attraction will be announced for an early date. Gas Tests Show Lower Proof Under City Control Gas being furnished under mu nicipal ownership, sinae the plant was taken over July 1, has aver aged 529.3 British thermal units of heating value? according to tests which have been made by Pro, C. F. Crowley, city chemist. The following tests have been made this month: July 1, 530.9; July, 8, 525.3; July 13, 527.3; July 2, 5337, Under private ownership the min imum heat unit standard was 600 units. R. B.
