Reports which reached the authorities today told of an encounter between Joseph B. Kl well, slain card expert and turfman, and two men who ac costed him on Forty-second street near the New Amsterdam roof, only a few hour before Elwell was tound dying in the reception room of the house in which he lived. While Elwell was on the New Amsterdam roof on the night of the murder as the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Lewisohn, according to the story, he was spotted by two "en emies" who were entertaining wom en. When the Lewisohns left early the two strangers followed and thev are said to have waited until Elwell oaid good night to his host and host ess and to Miss Viola Kraus before engaging him in conversation and finally an argument, on the side walk. A quarrel followed. It was cut short when Elwell sprang into a taxicab and directed the driver to go to his home. Then the stranger climbed into a second machine and both went directly to Elwell's home. Beyond that, the story presented to the authorities does not go. Today marked the beginning of the second month in the investiga tion of the murder. District Attor ney Swann, in discussing the case, declared that the authorities are still grimly sticking to the trail. He said: "We do not intend to lead the public on by vainglorious boasts. We shall spare no time, no effort, no expense in our pursuit of the Elwell assassin. I hope our labors will bear results and soon, but I shall speak of results only when they have been obtained." DEAN SAYS OUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS ARE AUTOCRATIC Tells Rural Pastors More Money Is Spent on Hogs And Cattle Than Upon Children. Lincoln, Neb., July 14. (Special.) The school for rural pastors opened this week at Nebraska Wes leyan with delegates from Nebras ka, Iowa. Kansas, Colorado and South Dakota. All phases of work which confronts rural leaders is taken up, including home econom ics and child study. Special lead ers from the east are handling the subjects of social movements, agri culture, education and evangelism. "You can do as much for a man by getting him a job as by per suading him to join the church," said Otis Moore of Mt. Vernon, la., Tuesday morning. "Get others to work and remember that it is al ways a struggle to. get a man to work, if that man is going to be any good on the job." Dean W. L. Ruyle of the rural school analyzed the church affiliation of those attending the state college and school of agriculture. Out of the 472 in the latter there are 166 students of Methodist affiliation, which constitutes the largest num ber of any of the 24 denominations represented. Must Socialize. Dean B. E. McProud is giving a series of addresses on the rela tion of the church to the social and amusement side of the community. He said Tuesday afternoon: "The church committed the almost unpardonable sin in allowing social affairs, sports and amusements to be commercialized, but it is possi ble for the church to combat and win against this commercialism. The social nature of the child i? the open door of the church. You will never spiritualize him until ycu socialize him and give his social nature full swing. The social and recreational movement in the churcl' will not save humanity but it will help. "There are two fundamental pre mises upon which the rural leader must depend all his effort. No in dividual organism, whether a grain of wheat, an animal or that most complex organism of all, a mar., will ever pass through the stages of growth and development and realize fruitage unless it operates on the basis of the law inherent in it self. And, the technique of any- Visits Omaha Office Which Once WasHis W. M. Not Democratic. "We claim in America we are educating the child for democracy so that when he graduates he may be a full-fledged unit of democracy. But our schools are conducted on the principal of an absolute autoc racy, and we expect a child to go out of that environment and be a model unit of the society in which he finds (himself, whereas he will try to do as all the rest are now doing, to squeeze all he can out of everyone else. "We are doing a lot more for our hogs, cattle and sheep than we ?.re for our children," said the dear. "A doctor told a man up in. the country that he must take his child ren to another climate or they would die of tuberculosis, which al ready had it ffip upon them. He replied that it would take too much money, but that year he spent over $2,000 on serum for his hogs and thought nothing of it." 1919 Gold Production T 1 A r AAA AAA T is :w,uuu, uuu: Less T1 t r T inan in rrevious iear Washington, July 14.
