ELWELL'S CHECKS SHOW WOMEN M "PENSION" LIST 'i i- One Friend Was Given $400 a ?ontb, Authorities Find Dry Officers Probe Whisky Ring. New York, Jul w 9. Turning their attention once again from the inves tigation of the possibility that Joseph B. Elwell, whist expert, might have been murdered because of some fi nancial transaction, members of the district attorney's office today began a probe into Llwell's financial deal ings with women. It was said late today that it had hetn ascertained that the slain card authority had paid one woman $400 a month up until a short time before he was found dying in the reception room of his home. Dry Agents in Probe. Meanwhile, prohibition agents con tinued their investigation of Elwell's alleged connection with a ring illic itly engaged in importing whisky into New York and disposing of it to wealthy Fifth avenue clubmen. The two men, whose arrest was de clared last night to be imminent, had not been taken into custody but were still under surveillance, the pro-, hibition authorities declared. Among witnesses questioned by District Attorney Swann today were several bankers from the financial district who brought with them records of Elwell's check transac tions covering a' period of several months prior to his death. These checks where they bore the name of . women, were compared with a list of the women already known to the authorities as' intimates, friends or acquaintances of the murdcret man, in an effort to learn if there might not be some new feminine figure in the case who has not been dis covered. , ' Look for Second Will. What the outcome of the investi gation was the district attorney did not announce, i Frederick Ingraham, the attorney who drew the second will for El well which .has not been found Me scribed the drawing of the instru ment to the authorities today. He said the will left most of the estate to Elwell's son and a small bequest to William E. Barnes, his secretary Elwell's horse trainer threw. some interesting light on the methods adopted by his employer to attract women. His system, the trainer said, was to hold aloof from the woman whom lie- wished to interest, at the same time praising her highly to her triends. His praise would invar iably reach the ears for which it was intended, he said, and qnoted El well as boasting that it seldom ' failed to bring, th woman to the, t.oint of making first advances her self. , , v: i 1 f Korea Asks Representation . Tokio, July 9. (By, the Associated Press.)The Diet today received a petition signed by 600 Koreans ask ing that Ko-ea be given representa tion in the Diet During'the session fear was expressed that the new American shipping law might have a disastrous effect upon Japanese shipping. John L Webster to Speak (--" Tonight Before Elks Club LIEUTENANT IS WINDING SELF IN MURDER PLOT Husband Who Shot Man He Claimed Killed Wife' Now Faces Charge of Killing Her. ' Chicago, July 9. A )robbery plot in connection with the shooting of the wife of Lieut. Carl Wanderer and a strange man in the vestibule of the Wanderer home on the night of June 21 was a new theory advanced by police today, following their in terrogation of the lieutenant. They declared they had discovered that Mrs. Wanderer had withdrawn $1,500 from a bank only two days previous to the shooting. The money, they added, "was later found in the Wan derer home. Police officials said that Wanderer had told them that he had planned to re-enter (the room and Police Ser geant John Norton added that he was working on the theory that the lieutenant "might have decided to frame up a robbery of his wife and get the money." The police official said that "it is possible the stranger had been employed by Wanderer to commit the robbery and that in the darkened vestibule he fired by mis take. Then, after he shot Mrs. Wan derer, her husband was forced to shoot him to cover up the con spiracy." ,In another statement today Wan derer, according to the police, ad mitted that both guns used in the shooting were his property. , Some Knee, Njrma!
