HITCHCOCK I S PLEASED WITH party nrniifiF I VII VlVM Nebraska Senator Praises Governor Cox and Predicts Victorious Campaign For Democrats. By E. C. SNYDER, H4hlnKlon Correspondent Oninha fW. Washington, July 6. (Special Telegram.) Senator Gilbert M. Hitchcock at no time during the long drawn-out fight over a presi dential nominee at San Francisco had cither visions or delusions of the lightning striking him. He was content to receive the vote of his own state and such other votes of confidence as he received from neighboring states during the course of the balloting. Of Governor Cox's nomination Senator Hitchcock said: Best Democrat Leader. "The nomination of Governor Cox is the strongest that could have been made. It insures a victorious cam paign. Of all the candidates before the convention he was strongest in the doubtful states. While loyal in his support of President Wilson's administration, he inherits noncof the enmities and antagonisms which inevitably attach to candidates in any way connected with the adminis tration. ' "I served with Governor Cox in the house of representatives for sev eral terms; have known him for nearly 20 years and believe him to be a man of high integrity, tremendous energy and unusual ability. He pos sesses the faculty of making friends and holding them. His remarkable success during the three campaigns in Ohio -gives some- indication of what he is likely to do as candidate for president. He is a progressive, forward-looking democrat, , liberal and broad-minded.. He has demon strated to the people of Ohio that he is a fine executive." Triumph for Tammany. The nomination of Governor Cox came at the end of a bitter struggle and is looked upon hereabouts as the triumph of what might be called the corrupt wing of the democratic party as represented by Tammany, the Sullivan-machine in Illinois, Taggart in Indiana and Governor Edwards in New Jersey. His nomination will make Ohio the battleground and every inch of the Buckeye state will be combed over for votes. Every city, village and hamlet in that great commonwealth will ring with the fiery eloquence of thousands of par tisans of the rival candidates, Hard ing and Cox, and the nation will watch the struggle with absorbing interest, , Since the organization .of : the re publican party along its present lines this is the third time that the leading candidates for president on the republican and democratic ticket have come from the same state Lincoln and Douglas from Illinois in 1860, Roosevelt and Parker from New York in 1904, and now Harding and Cox from Ohio in 1920.. ' Fifty Contenders in Big States. Cox's nomination will most large ly center the fight in the big states of New York, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, New Jersey and Massachusetts, whose total electoral vote is 145, and a they have wet leanings, the democrats hope to win the majority of them through the liberal leanings of their candidate. Just what Mr. Bryan and the anti saloon league will do with Governor Cox, the candidate, remains to be seen. Governor Cox was decidedly objectionable to William Jennings Bryan before the San Francisco convention, but Mr. Bryatl has been known to change his views on more than one - occasion .if expediency prompted the shift. . Cox's noniination is regarded as a victory for the wets. FOSTER4BARKER CO.
