Dear Miss Fairfax, Omaha Bee: I
am much interested in Y. W. C. A.

I hope to see the answer to this
letter in The Bee soon. Very sin

HOLDING A
- Adele Garrison's
Revelations
The Way Madge Strove to Win
Dicky's Approval.
Although little Mrs. Durkee
ranks high in my list of friends,
there are times when my fingers itch
to box her ears, and the moment
when the door closed after her and
her threat to send Maj. Grantland
over to our house was distinctly one
of the times.
My mother-in-law looked darkly
at me as the door closed.
"Sometimes I think that woman is
going into her dotage," she remarked
acidly. "Flowers to match the
gowns, forsooth!"
"But Mrs. Durkee isn't responsible
for that idea," I said, my sense of
justice triumphing over my irrita
tion. "You can't tell me!" Mother
Graham asserted haughtily. "That
Grantland never thought of that
poppycock all by himself. Either he
got it out of .some book, as I said
before, or Mrs. Durkee put it into
his fool noodle. I wouldn't put it
past her to have asked him plump
out if he didn't think flowers to
match the gowns wouldn't be the
'sweetest idea.'" ,
I turned my head hastily and pre
tended to be plucking a thread from
my skirt until I could control the
muscles around my mouth. When
my austere and august mother-in-law
descends to mimicry, which on
ly happens on rare occasions, she is
irresistibly ludicrous, but not in the
way she herself imagines.
"Well, he'll not get a piece of my
dress!" she reiterated with emphasis,
"and as for you, if Richard "
Mother and Son.
"Present, with bells on! What's
the row?"
Dicky stood in the doorway, smil
ing audaciously.
"I knocked, but you both were
gabbling so loud you couldn't hear
me," he explained, lounging indol
ently toward the nearest chair.
"Please don't be vulgar, Richard,"
his mother replied with her
haughtiest air. I knew that the
word "gabbling" had jostled her dig
nity. "And I wish you would ex
plain what you were doing just now
out on the veranda roof in that
very "
"Sketchy costume?" Dicky inter
polated. "Now I can finish that for
you. I am perfectly aware that the
neighbors will be scandalized, and
that I will probably catch my death
of cold. But needs must when such
a pretty and persistent little devil as
Mrs. Durkee drives, and I knew that
if I didn't make a mighty quick exit
she'd have me tied to the mast with
promises a mile long to straighten
out her row with Rita Brown."
"I don't know why that should
trouble you," his mother retorted
tartly. "It is my experience that
you are perfectly willing to make
promises, but that the fulfilling of
them"
' "Is one of the best things I for
get?" queried Dicky impudently.
"Sure thing. But, don't be cross,
mother, dear. Here I came in to
pronounce enconiums upon you, to
crown you with laurel wreaths 'as
a dead game sport, and you're rag
ging me as if I beat you up regular
every Saturday night."
A Surprise.
He had risen from his chair and
he crossed over to hers as he spoke
and put his smiling young face
down close to her frowning, with
ered one. I saw the disapproving
lines smooth out as if by magic,
and her son. It seemed an augury,
of her boy. I felt my heart warm
at this fresh proof of the wonderful
bond existing between a mother
and her son. It seemed as augury,
somehow,' for the" happiness which
I confidently expect to find in my
own little lad when he shall have
become a strong man and I an old
woman.
I knew, howeveer, that because
of this very love for her son, her
jealous disparagement of everything
she fancied he disliked, she would
be especially tenacious in the (mat
ta; of Major. Grautland's flowers..

New Phase of
of a Wife
So I resolved to forestall her, if
possible, for I dreaded to have any
unpleasantness mar the prepara
tions for Leila's wedding.
"You can't guess, Dicky." I said
carelessly, when, having kissed his
mother, he had loungei back into
his seat again, "the ridiculous pro
posal Mrs. Durkee has just been
making us."
I purposely made my tone as dis
paraging as I possibly cotfld, know
ing by experience the surest way of
winning my husband's approval of
something he really dislikes.
"How do you know it's ridicu
lous?" Dicky retorted. "Her fluffi
ness usually has a pretty level head
in spite of her inconsistencies. Spill
it and let me be the judge."
"Why, she says that Major
Grandland wants pieces of the
gowns of every woman in the wed
ding party so that he may get flow
ers to match."
"What's ridiculous about that?"
Dicky demanded belligerently. "It's
what I would have done if I'd been
providing the flowers. As it was, it
was my idea entirely. I suggested
it to Grantland."

Proper Thing Now h to
Peel Off Soiled Skin
Those ho abhor sticky, greasy, shiny,
streaked complexions should religiously
avoid creams, powders and rouges during
the heated days. There's no need for
them, anyway, since the virtues of merco
lized wax have become known. No amount
of perspiration will produce any evidence
that you've been using the wax. As it is
applied at bedtime and washed off in the
morning, the complexion never looks like
a make-up. Mercolized wax gradually
takes off a bad complexion, instead of
adding anything to make it worse. It has
none of the disadvantages of cosmetics
and accomplishes much more in keeping
the complexion beautifully white, satiny
and youthful, free from freckles, pimples,
blotches and other blemishes. Just get
an ounce of it at your druggist's and see
what a few days' treatment will do. Use
like cold cream.
