Omaha may not have reached the 200,000 count in her census, so con fidently expected on all sides but she did increase her position from 41st city in size to 35th, according to data assembled by the bureau of publicity of the Omaha Chamber of Commerce. Furthermore, according to Arthur Thomas, manager of the bureau, only one city passed Omaha during the past decade, and OmJia passed six that had formerly led her. Ak ron was the city that passed Omaha, and now ranks 32d, whereas 10 years ago it Was so far down the list it hardly counted. The monstrous growth of that city's tire industry, and the industrial expansion experi enced there during the var years, easily accounts for its jump in size, according to all authorities. Prices in Omaha are due for a permanent drop in November. Such was the good word given out by Mrs. Charles G. Ryaa, fair price commissioner- for Nebraska, at her home in Grand Island, Sunday. Mrs. Ryan is taking a much need ed rest. Affairs in her Omaha office are in the care of officials of the De partment of Justice in the federal building for the summer. "Summer is a quiet time in my de partment," said Mrs. Ryan. "Many of the Omaha people with whom r.iy conferences are held are now on their vacations, but renewal of activity in the early fall will keep my office busy. EXPERIENCE.. U.S.A. for The Bee by Sidney Smith "I do not expect to see food prices go down to any extent for some time "But men who are in a position to know have informed me that indica tions of a noticeable drop in prices of clothing and other merchandise are prevalent. "They expect the initial drop to occur in November and express the belief that this drop will be perma nent." Recent cut-price sales held by Omaha department stores were fore runners to this expected slump in prices, Mrs. Ryan believes. "Concrete results of the work of the fair price commission are not prominently noticeable at the pres ent time," said Mrs. Ryan. "But the efforts of the commis sion, I believe, will be crystalized early in the fall. "There is no question but that prices are due to come down. This hope has already been realized in many eastern cities, especially in clothing. "And reports of the wool market give us cause to believe that the old excuse of the high cost of raw ma terials can no longer be used to keep retail prices up." During Mrs. Ryan's absence from Omaha the work of her commission is in the care of J. H. Daly of the department of justice. Thus did Mrs. A. W. Jefferis, wife of the Nebraska congressman, score her husband for permitting their touring car to break down "on the home stretch" between Wash ington and Omaha. Mr. and Mrs. Jefferis and their son and daughter left Washington on June IS in their touring car for Omaha. They reached Boone, la., without mishap. Then something went wrong. The car refused to pull. And Mr. Jef feris could not diagnose the trou ble. "He doesn't know a carburetor from a rear axle," declared Mrs. Jef feris. "We were stalled within a few miles of our goal and as it was Saturday night we couldn't get any mechanics to work on the car. So, of course, my daughter and I had to take the train to Omaha."
