FEATURES CLOSE
OF SHRINE MEET
Omaha Delegates Surrender
Special Train for Return
Trip Go to Atlantic
City Next Year.
Portland, June 24. (Special Tele
gram.) Another great parade, the
final official event, featured the clos
ing day of the shrine convention.
The parade was the annual floral
pageant of the Portland rose fes
tival, given this year for the special
entertainment of the shrine visitors.
It was the greatest floral pageant of
the many this city has seen. The
parade was enjoyed particularly by
the shriners because it was one of
the few events of the week in which
they were spectators instead of par
ticipant's, although many of the.
shrine bands again marched to sup
ply music. Ani unusual feature was
the presence of a large delegation of
Canadian mounted police, it being
the first time this org. nization has
ever been permitted to Vave the
dominion. v
Another big event today was a
massed band concert and patrol on
Multnomah field. Most of the
shrine bairds and patrols took part.
It was a brilliant spectacle.
To Atlantic City Next.
Atlantic City was selected today
as the next convention city, the date
ft "being June 7 to 9. There was no
contest on the noor or tne conven
tion, the recommendation being
, made by the time and place commit
tee. Pueblo, Colo.; Wichita Falls,
Te., and Topeka, Kan., were grant
ed charters for new temples.
The members of the imperial
council divan are now looking for
ward to thei. trip to Alaska. They
will sail from Tacoma next Satur
day as the guests of the AfifJ temple
of that city, the home of Ellis Lewis
Garretson, the new potentate.
Omaha shriners today took a rest,
comparatively speaking. After cov
ering the Vi miles on foot in last
night's parade, in addition to all
other activities of the week, they

frankly admitted they were tired.
They canceled their plan to partici
pate in the mass concert and patrol
drill on Multnomah field this morn
ing and most of theni took it easy
around their headquarters. But
they were all out to see the floral
parade and pronounced it the great
est pageant of its kind they had ever
witnessed. '
Tangier is one of the few temples
that will break up its train for the
return trip. Special cars will be re
tained, but some of them will be
routed through Canada, some over
the Milwaukee and one car via Cali
fornia. The band will remain to
gether, returning through Seattle
and other northern cities, and will
play its rapid-fire jazz music where
cver it stops. Most of the Ne
braskans will leave tomorrow eve
ning. "Omaha joins all the other Shrin
ers in saying this convention has
been a magnificent success," said
George C, Adams, first lieutenant of
the patrol. "We never enjoyed more
iiearty hospitality than that extended
by Aikader temple and the people of
Portland. We are tired but happy.
It has" been a great week."
German Losses Heavy.
Geneva, June 24. Recent statis
tics published in Germany on that
country's war losses state that 1,350,
000 men were killed. There are to
dayi 520,000 war widows, according
to the statistics, 1,130,000 war or
phans and 500,000 maimed or con.

SCOURING TEXAS
FOR MISSING MAN
Nebraska Farmer Disappears
Mysteriously on Journey
In South.
Waco, Tex., June 24. (Special
Telegram.) HenryMenebroker, 49
years old, a wealthy farmer of Clear
water, Neb., ij missing in Texas. A
$500 reward has been offered for
information leading to his recovery.
Menebroker, who came to Texas
on a homeseekers' special train, was
last seen on the night of June 17,
as he was preparing to retire for
the night. His 17-year-old sqn,
Paul, missed him the following
morning when the train reach Waco.
The vestibule doors on i the car in
which he was riding were open all
night. He is supposed to have
stepped off the train while it was
moving.
Herman Menebroker, younger
brother of the missing man, and
C. E. Magness, a close friend, are
in Waco from Clearwater, leading
the search, which is extending all
over central Texas.
At the time Menebroke? left the
train he is said to have had only
a small amount of money on his
person and was wearing neither hat
Western Counties
Seek Extension of
Burlington Route
O'Neill. Neb., June 24. (Spe
cial.) The Interstate Commerce
commission will be asked to com
pel the Burlington railroad to ex
tend its road from the present Sioux
City-O'Neill terminus at O'Neill, to
Thedford, Neb., to connect with its
main line there. A vast territory
along the proposed route of ap
proximately 102 miles, fertile and
productive, at present is without
nor coat. He had come to Texas
to improve some farm lands bought
in the lower Rio Grande valley a
year ago. Being unable to obtain
laborers and materials, he had given
up the idea and was returning to
Nebraska when he left the train
during the night of June 17.

ferring at O'Neill to the North
western, by 70 miles.

Railroad Employes Hurt
When Motor Jumps Rails
Fremont, Neb., June 24. (Spe
cialj R. E. Willard and J. C. Wat
son, Union Pacific railroad employes
whose homes ar in Chicago, were
injured here when a small niotor-
driverrtruck leaped the rails. Wil
lard suffered broken ribs and leg
and possible internal injuries, while
Watson escaped with severe body
bruises. Both are at the Fremont
hospital.
Power Company Given
Permit to Sell Stock
Lincoln, June 24. (Special.)
The state bureau of security's issued
a permit to the Continental Gas and
Electric company of Omaha to sell
securities amounting to $500,000.
This permit was the first of the kind
the bureau has issued relatnig
strictly to a public service corpo
ration, and while permits of a
similar character have been granted,
this one was the first to a foreign
corporation.

Merle-Smith Sworn In
Washington, June 24. Maj. Van
S. Merle-Smith of New York was
sworn into office today as third
assistant secretary of state, an
nouncement of his appointment hav
ing been made earlier in the day.
He succeeds Breckenridge Long,
who recently resigned to enter the
campaign for the democratic nomi
nation for United States senator
from Missouri.
Fred K. Neilsen of Nebraska to
day assumed the office of solicitor
of the State department. He for
merly was in charge of fhat office,
but resigned in 1918 to enter the
army. He served in various capaci
ties with the peace commission.
League to Meet July 27
Madrid, June 24. The next meet
ing of the council of the league of
nations will be held at San Sebas
tian on July 27, it was announced
todav.
