Lincoln, June 14. (Special.) In
the words of Theodore Roosevelt,
Governor McKelvic is "dee-lighted"
over the result of the republican na
tional convention last week and its
action in nominating men who will
be elected. To the press today the
governor gave out the following
statement:
"I am very well pleased with the
action of the national republican
convention in selecting Sep- or Har
ding and Governor Coolidgo as the
standard-bearers for the republican
party in the forthcoming compaign.
Both of these men are eminently
oualified for the important positions
to which they have been nominated,
and I have not the least doubt of
their election.
"While Senator Harding i not so
well known through this part of the
country, I feel sure that as the peo
pie become acquainted with him, his
record and his qualifications, they
will be fully assured of his fitness
lor the presidency. He is a man
who has come up from the people
thtough the ranks of labor and in-
rjjstry; he is intensely American in
is instincts and beliefs, and while
he may be counted a conservative,
this is true only in the sense that we
would have our public men conser
vative at this time.
"As chief executive of Massachu
setts, Governor Coolidge has shown
himself to be a man of courage and
conviction.
"Withal, the combination is one
that has many elements of popular
strength, and I feel that the inter
ests of this region, including agricul
ture, industry and labor, may feel
assured that when these men are
elected, there will be a wturn to
those sound principles of action
which make for progress along the
lines of permanence and general
prosperity." !,

Telephone Companies Given
Authority to Sell Stock
Lincoln, June 14. (Special.) The
Union Telephone company of
Bloomfield, with exchanges at that
place and Warsaw and Crofton, have
been granted authority to issue stock
in the amount of $25,000 by the state
railway commission.
The Lincoln Telephone company,
in addition to the $250,000 in stock
it was granted to issue some
time ago when it made its applica
tion for $500,000, has been given ou
thority by the commission to issue
the balance of $250,000.
The Farmers & Merchants Tele
phone company of Alma, with ex
changes at Orleans, Republican
City, Stamford and Woodruff, has
been given authority to raise rates
ranging from 25 cents to 35 cents
per phone.
Plans for New Capitol. j
Lincoln, June 14. (Special.) j
Plans for the new capitol building
are beginning to reach the office of
the governor and have been placed
in the custody of the secretary of
State until the building committee,
vhich meets tomorrow, shall look
them over. Plans from two archi
tects have arrived already, both from
the cast.

Tablet in Honor of

Given State G. A. R.
Lincoln, June 14. (Special.) The
tablets which were sent with the two
ambulances presented by the Ne
braska department of the Grand
Army of the Republic and the de
partment of the Woman's Relief
Corps were presented to the depart
ment of the G. A. R. of Nebraska by
the relief corps in appropriate cere
monies this afternoon in Representa
tive hall.
The tablets bear the following in
scription: "General John J. Pershing
from Nebraska Grand Army of the
Republic and Woman's Relief Corps,
May 27. 1918, U. S. A."
The tablets, which are of polished
brass, were attached to one of the
ambulances which was sent to the
C54th ambulance company which
v.-as almost entirely of Nebraska
men, while the other was given fo
Br.se Hospital No. 90, wh;ch also
was in charge of Nebraska men.

the court house last Saturday after

cial.) C. W. Pugsley of Lincoln
will head a delegation of 50 editors
of agricultural publications from all
sections of the country who are on
their way to Washington to inves
tigate the workings of the Depart
ment of Agriculture. They will hold
a meeting there June 17, 18 and 19.
Two conferences will be hold with
Secretary Meredith and the editors
have appointed committees to study
what each division and bureau is do
ing. There has been from time to
time criticism of the work of the
department and this probably will be
the first time that any one body of
citizens have set out to find out just
what is going on at Washington.
Secretary Meredith has asked for
the investigation.

braska Farmer, is president of the
editors' association. Among thse
who will attend from the middle

To Hold Fist Picnic Sunday

Farmer Ends Life.
Sturgis, S. D., June 14. (Special
Telegram.) James Lesard, farmer,
committed suicide at his home near
Red Owl by shooting himself above
the right temple. The body was dis
covered by a neighbor. Lesard ap
parently had been dead several days
when found. A note found in his
clothes read: "I am losing my mind.
Goodby, don't worry."

Robert C. Druesedow returned
from the republican national con
vention yesterday with his coat off
for Harding and Coolidge.
"It was a happy solution and it is
a great American platform," he said.
"My coat is off already for the tick
et and it is going to be off until
after the election next November."
Adam McMullen of Beatrice,
gubernatorial candidate at the Anril
primary, came home on the same
tiain, and he, too, was all aglow
over republican prospects.
Jessie Craig, also of Beatrice, was
on the train, and he gave expression"
to a feeling of satisfaction and optimism.
