Hodcarriers and Laborers On Strike for More Money Hundred of hodcarriers and com mon laborers in the city are out on strike. Demands of an increase from 75 cents to 87 1-2 cents for hodcarriers and from 60 to 75 cents an hour for common laborers were made bythe strikers. PERSHING Secretary Baker Replies Proposal of General to Retire. to Chicago Tribune-Omaha Bee Leased Wire. Washingfbn, June 11. Secretary of War Eaker today replied to the letter of Gen. Johji J. Pershing, which, expressed the latter's desire to retire from active military duties. The secretary said that he felt sure that the president would meet his wishes whenever expressed. The secretary's letter was as fol lows: "I have received your letter of June 7, with regard to the possibility of your relinquishing military 4uty within the next few months. JX am happy to note that you are planning to aid us in the reorganization con templated by the recent act of con gress, the importance of which, of course, is very great. In this work your knowledge of the qualifications of officers will be indispensible, and as the single list for promotion is a project which you earnestly recom mended to congress it will help us all to have your aid in instituting it. "Your military life has been active and exacting; services to the coun try entitle you to choose with the utmost freedom the activities and interests to which you should de vote your time and should you ad here to your present wish to retire, I feel quite sure the president will meet you- wishes whenever v.ex expressed. Gage County Sheriff Is Called in School Election Beatrice, Neb., June 11. (Spe cial.) The special election held at Union Center school house for the purpose of annexing nine school districts to district No. 161 was vyarmly contested and resulted in the proposition being defeated by a vote of 110 to 78.
