MAYOR SMITH, PUTS OFFICIAL "0. K." ON GEORGETTE WAISTS Girl Who Lost Job $ecausc of "Immodest Dressing" Ap proved by Executive. Mayor Smith now believes he would recognize a georgette waist if he met one in the street or boule vard. Miss Tillie Hofmann, 2447 Pink ney street, accompanied by a youtig woman friend, called at the mayor's office yesterday to obtain official ap proval of her georgette waist which she asserted caused her dismissal as elevator conductor at the Union Pacific headquarters. The girl explained that Superin tendent Brown of the building or dered the elevator girls to wear white waists and black skirts and that she spent $4 for the waist, which she wore when calling of the mayor. "I want you to look me over and say whether you believe the super intendent was justified in discharg ing me? Do you see anything im modest about this waist?" she asked. The mayor adjusted his spectacles and quickly voiced his approval of the waist and disapproval of the man who dismissed the young woman on account of the waist. The mavor even wrote his opinion for Miss Hof mann. "Let the women wear whatever they wish when they are at work or we are in danger of losing their services," added the mayor as an afterthought. Miss Hoffman told the mayor that she expected to be married next month and that she wasn't worry ing so much after all about her job, but she wanted to be vindicated by the mayor.
