Extreme weakness developed in the grain markets today after oats, had jumped to a new high level record. Im mense realizing sales on the part of holders brought about the reversal. Corn closed nervous, l-2c net lower to 1 l-4c advance, with July, $1.74 1-8 to $1.74 1-4, and September, $1.61 7-8 to $1.62 1-4. Oats finished at 2 l-2c decline to 1 iU2c gain. Provisions showed a- rise varying from 7c to 70c. " , In the demoralization resulting from heavy selling to unload while fancy prices could be obtained, the July delivery of oats collapsed in value as much as fc a bushel. Corn derived its initial strength and subsequent weakness almost en tirely from the wild fluctuations of oats. Higher values on hogs together with export call for lard strength ened provisions. Industrial .stocks advanced while rails wen. heavy in dull trading and money nervous. As was the case on the previous days of this week the market was dull and narrow, also the industrial list continued its"us4ial performances by ignoring whatever unfavorable features there are in the present sit uation while the rails were quiet and none too steady. There were no further upsetting breaks In this department though, and It looked as though the readjustment of North-. western to the new dividend levels had about been completed. The rest of the railroad shares wore heavy and gave the impression that had there been any reAl attempt made to force them down they would have given way easily, but there was no attempt of this sort made and the list remained stable at only fraction al declines on the day. Industrials Strong. The industrials which have been at tracting all the recent market attention were again featured, especially in the forenoon when some new high prices for the present movement were reached. The equipments were particularly favored by the speculative activity of the morning ajtd moved forward easily. However, dull ness operated here, too, and kept price changes within rather narrow bounds. Call money was nervous as on other recent days and covered a range which extended from an opening quotation of 7 per cent to a high In the afternoon of 12 per cent. At the time of the clos ing of business on the stock exchsnges loans were being negotiated at 10 per cent and after the close It was reported that transactions had been made at 1 per cent lower. J.iberty Bonds Weak. From the wav the money market has been acting, as well as1 of the security it is highly probable that the bank state ment at the end of the week will reflect another considerable outflow of funds to the interior. Reports current In bank circles say this movement Is still In prog ress and li likely to continue for seme little time to come. Liberty bonds and notes were week, but sale were not excessive and there was no demonstration in the securities which waa Interpreted es a good sign, for with the treasury coming into the market with 6 8-4 and 6 per cent tiiifflcates It might easily have happened that war bonds would again break badly. In addition to the higher interest rate on treasury certifi cates it was said that the Chicago re serve bank had decided to use the mar ket price Instead of par, as the basis for lta rediscounts of war bonds. Compute Loans at Par. This, so far as is known. Is the first official recognition of the decline In the Issues. In other reserve districts par still Is the offlcal figure for computing loans to member banks, and national banks are still allowed to carry bonds subscribed for, but sot those purchased in the mar ket at a discount at par. This Chicago announcement, had the undertone been aggressively weak as It was some weeks ago, might also have tlppjeM over the Liberty bond market. ! Anglo-French bonds were very flrrt Prices did not vary from the day "befon but the demand was insistent and gave evidence ot being abundantly capable of absorbing all, offerings. Sterling ex change was steady and slightly : higher, but the continental rates were off a little. Chinese and Japaneee exchange rates were about unchanged and bar silver displayed a recovery after Its several days ol pre cipitous decline. Japan Condition Improve. Banking advices from Japan were to th effect that conditions were some better than they have been and that while some further difficulties may be experienced over the June 30 settlement, the banking powers have the situation fairly well in hand And nothing extremely serious1 is anticipated. An Increase of about $2,500,000 gold In the Bank of England's stocks, follow ing a similar Increase last week, re vived talk of big gold shipments from London to New York, but no official word waa spoken. r New York Quotations yew York Quotations.
