SOUTH SIDE'S ACE
POLITICIAN RAISES
RUMPUS IN COURT
Petit Jurors Are Underpaid,
Says Jerry Howard in Elo
quent Outburst.
Jerry Howard, South Side's ace
politician, sounded the keynote, ad
dress at the opening of federal court
yesterday.
Howard's speech was heard
throughout the federal building and
many who heard the applause ex
tended the veteran of many political
battles, thought that Senator Henry
Cabot Lodge was in Omaha.
Howard was summoned as a
petit juror and he used some elo
quent oratory to express his opin
ion of the compensation received by
jurors. After delivering his little
speech, Howard wrote parts of it on
a sheet of paper and while attor
neys for opposite sides were arguing
with each other, Howard leisurely
strolled to Federal Judge Wood
rough's bench and handed him the
missive. Woodrough passed the
"buck" to Marshal James Dahlman
with orders to read it.
The note remarked that jurors
were paid less than many common
laborers. David H. Christie who
waited for two hours to be called
on the jury and then later ordered
to be excused by one of the at
torneys became angry at Howard's
fault-finding . and while the verbal
battle was in progress Judge Wood
rough called a halt and the two de
baters walked out of the court,
room.
At The Parks.
Tonight Lakeview park will be the
scene of one of the funniest of pll
attractions .recently staged at New
Yorks famous Coney Island.
While the overall-housedress
movement was fresh in the minds of
the people of that great city, the
management of this resort worked
out a plan and coupled it with the
overall movement that proved to be
a source of much fun to this resort's
many patrons.
The overall-housedress ball and
outing; the same as at Coney Island,
will be staged in its entirety tonight.
' The affair will consist of a parade
of the overall and housedress; a fat
and lean contest; a tall and short
contest and many other laugh get
ters. To enter into any of the com
petitive contests it will be necessary
for the gentlemen to wear overalls
and the ladies house dresses. Many
valuable prizes will be given.
AT the
THEATERS
I
F you plan to attend the Orpheum thl
week, why not choose the vaudeville
performance that starts at 6:40? For
at that show more seats are available
than at the other two performances, one
of which begins at 2:40 In the afternoon,
and the other at 9 In the evening. Al
ways the 6:40 vaudeville show is pre
ceded and followed by the screen feature.
A bill unusually popular is being presented
this week. The topline act is offered by
Billy Montgomery and Minnie Allen. Non
sense of the most hilarious ort. In' ad
dition to songs and piano playing, makes
this act the applause hit of the show.
In the one-act play, "The Champion," Is
not really the champion boxer, but hi
little old mother, who has chief impor
tance. It 1 a heart-Interest story well
acted.
Heading the variety bill at the Empress
for the last times today are The Six
Venetian Gypsies, all talented musician.
These gypsies have an act sure to make a
hit. Andrus and Miller, two girls, pre
sent a comedy act which they entitle
"Two Nuts from Brazil." Their jokes are
original and their songs humorous. Burn
Lynn offer "Tickle and Taps a comedy
dancing and singing act which will prove
entertaining. They are good dancer, and
their "St. Vitus," 'Shimmle" snd other
dances prove a source of amusement.
Porter and White and company, in a
sketch entitled "The Visitor," present an
set different from the usual one-act
sketch, and the performer take their
jjarta well.
