next week, indicated that of the
avowed candidates lor presidential
nomination, Governor Lowden of
Illinois has th? best chance of car
rying off the pric.
The seasoned republican veterans,
who began appearing on the scene
J'riday, 1 found, do not expect the
delegates to name .cither Gen. Wood
or Senator Johnsoti.
The prevalent understanding is
that Wood is slated for early elim
ination from the contest. The gen
eral is up against a volume of op
position, which seems to the prac
tical politicians to be well nigh
insuperable. In addition to the an
tagonism of old guardsmen from
the start, Wood is suffering from
antagonisms contracted by his
managers in "projecting his cam
paign into the states of favorite
sons.
See 350 Votes in Offing.
The iiost hopeful of the Wood
managers think they see 350 votes
in sight for the general on about
the third ballot, but that is as far
as they are willing to go in the
line of prediction when discussing
the situation frankly. This top
figure is some 130 votes short of
a majority.
The Johnson managers do not
expect the senator to get within
shouting distance of the nomina
tion unless both Wood and Lowden
should be eliminated and then their
chief hope lies in a possible stam
pede of the convention to the Cal
ifornia senator. The appearance
of Johnson in the convention on the
league of nations issue in connec
tion with the platform would be re
lied upon to promote such a stam
pede in the nomination.
Stampede Improbable.
A convention in which there are
500 delegates who sat in the con
vention of 1916 and 300 veterans of
the convention of 1912, however, is
not likely to be stampeded. There
fore the hope of the Johnson man
agers is put down as a slender one,
to say the least.
Lowden occupies the strategic po
sition in convention calculations
that he has held for several weeks.
His reserve strength made up of the
pledges of several hundred delegates
for second choice, makes him for
midable to begin with. He is be
ing strengthened by the decisions
of the national committee on con
gests, decisions which will be in
dorsed by the credentials commit
tee, with the result of weakening
Wood by the same token.
It remains to be seen whether the
-'Lowden candidacy is permanently
Nijured by the revelations of the
payment of Lowden campaign
funds to the Missouri delegates who
appropriated the money to their
own uses instead of expending it
in primary organization. If the
delegates pledged, to Lowden who
are to arrive in the next few days
t-hould disclose any considerable
weakening as a result of the infkt
ence of popular opinion in connec
tion with the campaign fund affair,
the nomination of Lowden may be
come an impossibility.
There is clear indication among
the delegates arriving today, how
ever, that the Illinois governor has
not been appreciably injured in pub
lic esteem by the Washington testi
mony, chiefly because he ' lost no
time in demonstrating that he
turned over the fund to be expend
ed in Missouri for legitimate, or
ganization purposes and that he was
taken advantage of by a couple of
unscrupulous delegates.
The Missouri delegation will
meet in Chicago next Monday to
rh'scuss the expenditure of $38,000
of Lowden campaign funds in their
state, it was announced today.
The opposition to Governor Low
den in Chicago is confined to the
democratic press and representa
tives of the democratic party, ac
cording to Senator Lawrence Sher
man. The suggestion that friends of
other candidates are seeking to un
dermine Senator Johnson's strength
in the Michigan and Nebraska dele
gations led him to say:
, ; "I would not say that I think it is
going on, but5! nave had it sug
gested that it was. I want nothing
to do with that kind of politics. I
will have the Neebraska and Michi
gan delegations. You will find their
pledges in writing."
"Do you mean that those del
gates are to remain with you until
you personally release them?"
"iXritil it be demonstrated beyond
a peradventure of a doubt that I am
otKt of the fight and that would
mean substantially until I release
them. I am no trader. I will make
no compromise or trades, but will
make a straight-out fight. I will
take what comes with absolute
equanimity. I am going to win if
it is possible. I am making a
straight-out fight, with a definite,
certain view upon a specific plat
form." , "Have you a plank on the league
of nations platform?"
"I have none here, but I under
stand one has been prepared, of
which I am not at liberty to speak,
that will develop."
Eighty-two thousand young girls
t4 women in soviet Russia have
been nationalized or communized.
Mrs. Marie Laura Hospe, mother
of A. Hospe of Omaha, will cele
brate her 93d birthday anniversary
in her home at Napoleon, O., June
16. Mr. Hospe plans a short vaca
tion trip back to Ohio to help his
mother celebrate the anniversary.
Mrs. Hospe was born in 1827.
Angry Mob Races to
Stake Claims in New
Open Diamond Fields
Chicago, Tunc 5 Ten thousand
people, including many women,
pegged claims in the new diamond
fields at Taungs in liechuaualand,
South Africa, on opening day, ac
cording to a cable dispatch.
The district is 100 miles north of
Kimberley, in "a waterless, treeless,
gamcless desert." Reports of its
wonderful riches became rife when
diamonds were found there several
months ago. Fortune hunters and
adventurers flocked to the scene
from all over South Africa.
When the government's opening
proclamation was read the crowd
was massed behind a flag line. A
revolver shot started the race. The
mob burst across the sands in a
marl scramble. Men seemed to go
suddenly insane. They fought and
clawed and knocked each other
down, while those behind trampled ,
over the fallen. Some had hired
professional sprinters to do their
running. One of these ctuinbled
and impaled himself upon an iron
spike. He died unattended and un
noticed and the gamble of claim
staking went on abont his corpse.
No diamond field was ever ex
ploited at a more opportune time
for quick riches. A bonanza market
awaits' all the diamonds found, with
an insatiable world demand at the
highest prices in history. Digging
began a few hours after the stam
pede was over, but no reports of
success or failure so far have
reached ' oy'side world. The next
few wer!;s will tell the tale. The
Bcchuanaland desert may prove a
false alarm or a new Golconda.
Houdini With Thirst
, Steals Whisky From
Locked! Cell in Jail
Detroit, Mich., June 5. Some per
son with the gift of a Houdini and
the thirst of a sponge robbed a
locked cell in the Walkerville, Ont.,
police headquarters recently.
It was no ordinary robbery, such
as the removal of gold, silver,
radium, bullion, diamonds and that
sort of stuff. They tok 25 cases of
liquor.
The 25 cases were part of more
than 100 cases seized in the home
of a Walkerville resident suspected
of being in the rum-running busi
ness. They were placed in the cell
at night. In the morning, although
the cell and the fail were still there,
the liquor had disappeared.
No clew exists, except some
finger prints on the dust that had
gathered on the window sills.

Davis, 13, and Vera Turton, 10,
schoolmates, neighbors and youth
ful lovers, started out recently to see
the world and caused their mothers
and fathers many hours' anxiety.
It might not have fared so badly
with the youthful elopers but for the
fact that they found the "world"
very damp and dreary; discovered
that cozy, warm beds are a real
blessing, and finally returned, wet,
weary and bedraggled, bringing back
the few possessions they had taken
with them in a little red express
wagon.
