sill THE BEE: OMAHA, SATURDAY, JUNK ' 1 1 I FAIL TO REACH DEFINITE FIGURE - ON WOOD FUNDS Eastern Treasurer Unable to . Give Estimate on National Donations Until Books .. Are Audited. Washington, June 4. The senate committee investigating the financ ing of campaigns of presidential candidates today sought an estimate of the amount raised for the candi dacy of Major General Wood for the republican nomination but failed to arrive at a definite figure. Horace S. Stebbins, of New York, eastern treasurer of the Wood na tional campaign committee, said he would be unable to estimate the Wood national fund until the books were audited. Chairman Kenyon of the committee thought that an ad dition of $74,390 to the total of $1,180,000 estimated by A. A. Sprague, the Wood fund treasurer at Chicago, would give the grand total. Senator Pomerer.e of Ohio, democratic member of the commit tee, however, figured that approxi mately $228,000, should be added to Mr. Sprague's total. While the committee was hearing Mr. Stebbins, the senate sent to committee with instructions to re port toniorrow, the resolution of fered yesterday by Senator Pome rene proposing that the srope of the inquiry be enlarged to include congressional campaigns and that the investigation be continued through the November ele.'tion Stebbins, whom senate officers had been seeking since earlv in the in quiry, was the only witness at the committee's day session. He de clared that he had been on a trip in the Canad'an woods far from tele phone or telegraph "ines. Chairman Kenyon told him that the commit tee was satisfied that he had no in tention of avoiding examination. Testimony given by Stebbins re lated to eastern financing of the Wood campaign and accounted for contributions totalling approximate ly $263,000. Some of the contribut ors and their amounts proviously have been given to the committee by Mr. Sprague. ' i Fires Destroy Settlements. St. Johns, N.
