THE BEE : t OMAHA, SATURDAY, JUNE 5, 1920. 13 V 0 V IV , or J) ry V Lucy - y 1 FITCH PEBKIN5 n J ' - - i "Yes said the Father, "it is Fuji, the most beautiful mountain in the world." By and by Take said, "I don't feel bit like a giant any more." .And Taro said. "Neither do I." For a Ion time they stood look ing at it. Then they turned and crept quietly down the dark stairs, holding tight .to their Father's hands. ' - They went bacle to Mother and Grandmother and Bot'Chan under the cherry trees. i "We must take the Baby home," said the Mother as soon as she saw them. "It's growing late." "Oh, mayn't we stay just a little longer?" Take begged. . "Please' said Taro. "If wego now we can go home .by bbat said theTJffher. "I didn't believe a single other nice thing could happen this day," sighed Take. "But going home by boat will be 1 nicer than staying. Won't it, Taro?" But Taro was already on his way to the landing. y There was a pleasure boat tied to the wharf. The whole family got on board; the boatman pushed off and away they went over the blue waters and into the river, and-down the river a long way, through the cltyand beyond. They passed rice fields, where men and women in great round hats worked away, standing ankle deep in water. There were fields where tea plants were growing. There were little brown thatched roofs peeping out from un der green trees. There , were glimpses of little streets in tiny vil- -W lages, and of people riding in a queer sort of "basket hung from a pole and carried on the-shoulders of two men. At last they came to a landing place near their home. They were glad to see the familiar roofs again. Taro and Take raced ahead of the others to their own little house in the garden. At the door they found ever so many clogs. There were sounds of talking jnside the house. t "What do you suppefe is going to happen now?" Take asked Taro. . "I don't know but something rtf. Inc.) Examination of the feathers with which the back of a duck is covered4 will show that these are placed so that they overlap, in the same- way that shingles are placed on a roof or scales on the body of a fish. And the pur pose of thii overlapping is the same asVin the case of the shingles or the scales to pre vent water seeping through and causing injury. In addition to this protective growth of feathers, the duck has a form of water-insurance in the shape of an oily secretion which is formed by the glands at the base of the feathers and which permeates the feathers them selves, rendering them thorough ly waterproof and impervious to the weather. By this combina tion of "shingled" feathers and oil, the duck is assured that no water will get through his body covering and injure, the tender kin beneath for, even if his oil glands should cease to function, he still has the protection of several layers of, close-lying feathers, or, if his feathers should thin out, he can depend upon the oily secretion to shed the water. Only birds which are by nature fo be at home in- the water possess this protective oil gland. Tomorrow's Question: WHY do we have nightmares? ? Miss Svvartz didn't want to wait until shegot clear down town to read the day's news, so when she came to the self -serve Omaha Bee box at Fiftieth and Dodge streets, she (dropped 2 cents in the slot and took her paper. About 30 of these convenient sub-stations will be installed by The Bee in various parts of the residential sections of the city. If the customer has no pennies to deposit 2 cents for one paper, he may drop in a dime and take a paper each day for five days.
