Emiho Falmero, Pa Rourke's Cuban twirler, bowed in defeat yes terday to the St. Joe Drummers, score 4 to 3, before a crowd that packed Rourke park to its capacity. The same teams meet this after noon in a double-header, the result of which will give one team or the other a firm hold on first place in the Western League standings. The first game starts at 2:15. Arnold Luschen, former Rourke, faced the locals on the mound yes terday. Luschen pitched great tall. A fluke hit in the seventh allowed two of the Rourkes' runs to cross the plate. The third Rourke tally was well earned. . Start to Hit Palmero. The Josies set upon Palmero in the very first inning. After two men were gone, Kelleher drove a single through short and stole second where he perished when Conroy fanned. In the third inning, Crosby singled through short but his team mates lacked the power to score him. In the fourth frame the visit ors tallied their' first. Brubaker whaled a double deep into left cen ter to open the inning. Kelleher bunted along the first base line for a sacrifice but he was safe at first and Brubaker at third on a fielder's choice. Conroy lofted a long drive to the flag pole .in", center field which Platte turned into a sensa tional catch, after a hard run. Bru baker scored from third on the play. In the shcth after Luschen had fhed out, Emerich and Brubaker each singled through short. Kelle her sailed a hit into right field which Donica muffed, Emerich scoring oh the play. Brubaker and Kelleher taUied on Conroy's safe drive through first. Two of the four hits that occurred in the sixth and ulti mately lost the game for the Rourkes might have been fielded without ex tra effort on the part of Mason and Lelivelt. Kirby closed the frame wth a fly out to Platte. Three men had crossed the dish. That was all the scoring-the visitors could do. Rourkes Start to Hit: With the count 4 to" 0 against them, the Rourkes started to hit. Hale, the first man up in the sixth, lined a single through the box and Palmero drove one over first. Gis lason grounded Out to Kirby, both runners advancing. Weidell hit a hot one along the third base line, scoring Hale. - Things were just be-einninp- to look- rosv when Al PUh. drove the pill straight at Luschen's glove at 199 miles an hour. The ball stuck fast and Luschen non- :halantly tossed to Brudaker,,doub ing Palmero for the third out. Nothing daunted the locals triprl again in the seventh toovercome the josies lead. Uonica grounded out but Lelivelt singled to right. Lee hit to Kelleher forcino- Lelivelt at second. .'Two down. Mason shot a double down the first base line, Lee being held at third. Hale hit a pop up between thy box and, first base. Botn conroy ana Kirby tried to field it, and between them, it fell to earth untouched. One more hit and two more runs for the Rourke clan! . .. .-. ... ' The came mav as well havo rnrlert thri" Tn' the' ichtVi after fttolaenn had grounded out, Weidell doubled over second. Platte was hit by a pitched ball. Two men on and one down. Donica lifted a little fly out to ' Bonowitz who doubled Platte Dundee Beats Lawlor. Lawrence, Mass.," May 29. ', Indianapolis, Ind., May 30. The stage was set tonight for the eighth renewal of the 500-mile automobile race at the Indianapolis speedway tomorrow, when speed stars of four nations will match their skill for racing supremacy and the lion's share of $85,000, the richest purse in the history of automobile racing. Twenty-five drivers are scheduled to face the starter..;, .-; . After final elimination trials were held this afternoon the gates of the 2Yi-mt course were closed to the public and the drivers worked over their motors to have them as me chanically perfect as skilled hands could make them. Elimination trials during the week developed aston ishing speed and the record of 89.84 miles an hour established by Ralph De Palma when he won the event in 1915 is expected to be shattered. De Palma, in his speed trials for tomorrow's race, drove his car at the. rate of 99.65 miles an hour, which earned him the coveted pole position for the getaway. Gossip of the race crowds shows De Palma to be a strong favorite, although Rene Thomas, Howard Wilcox and Jules Goux, the French driver, who has competed in former races here, are counted upon as dan gerous contenders. The Chevrolet brothers Louis and Gaston Tom my Milton, ' Eddie Hearns, Joe Boyer, Ralph Mulford and other veterans also are regarded as dark horses. The winner of the race will re ceive $20,000 and he also has a chance at the lap prize of $20,000 offered by the business men' of In dianapolis. A prize will be awarded the winner of each complete circuit of the track, and it is possible for a driver to take and retain the lead, thus assuring him of a total of $40, 000. Weather indications tomorrow are for a warm, bright day and the speedway management is figuring on a crowd of between 100,000 and 125, 000. The influx of visitors began early this morning, "and! hotels are jammed to double capacity. Cots brought as much as $15, while thou sansd of visitors were accommodated in private homes at $5 a person. Man-O'War Hangs Up New World Record for ile Race Around Turns New York, May 30. A world's record for a one-mile horse race around turns was made by the 3 year old Man O'War, winner of the 1919 futurity in covering the distance in the Withers' - stake at Belmont park in one minute, 5 3-5. seconds. The former record, 1:361-5, was made in August. 1918, by Sun Briar at Saratoga, N. Y, and equalled a year later by Fairy Wand on the same track. Man O'War, by 4 Fair Play Mahuba, set a terrific pace from the start and finished under a hard pull, two lengths in front of Wildair, which won the Metropolitan handi cap last Monday. The winner was riddqn by Jockey Kummer, whose efforts to keep his horse under re straint were unavailing throughouf the race. ' . The three horses in the race, including David Harum, which was 15 lengths behind Wildair, carried 118 pounds. battle witnessed by 4,000 spectators. The score was 4 to 1.
