TALKS BEFORE
SCHOOL FORUM
i
muiuiwcaiciu uuivciaiiy in
structor Gives Excellent Ad
dress On Subject of "How
Nation s Financed."
rpf. Horace Secrist, instructor of
-economici and statistics at North
western University, told members of
the Omaha school forum in the city
council chamber yesterday.
"You do not get the same econo
mies of expenditure publically that
you do privately, because political
organizations invariably are un
economical' His lecture, "How the Nation is
Financed," was repeats din the aft
ernoon and evening in the council
chamber;
He asserted that the object of pub
lic finance should.be to obtain a
maximum of satisfaction of social
nfceds from a minimum of expendi
ture. He reviewed the development
of organized society, with its chain
of increasing needs and wants and
attendant increase of taxes.
s "There is every tendency and in
centive to increase the needs of the
state to satisfy our social wants, be
cause our social organization is
growing more complex," he said. "It
is a truism of economics that we are
organized in groups for production
and consumption. No man liyes to
himself in these days. Production
and consumption has become social
ized. Our social wants can be sat
isfied only through co-operative
groups legally organized.
"There should be a differentiation
between large and small incomes,"
he added.
The crudities of the general prop
erty tax system in vogue in most
of the state were pointed out by the
speaker, who stated that this sys
tem falls far short of justice because
of diversified valuation conditions.
Ft. Omaha to Build Craft
For Gordon Bennett Race
Authority was received at Fort
Omaha yesterday from the director
of air service for the construction at
the fort of an 80,000 cubic feet
spherical balloon, to carry the army
colors in the international balloon
race for the Gordon Bennettcup in
September.
The balloon will be made from
materials now on hand at the fort
and the rigging and accessories also
will be constructed at the fort by
balloon .mechanics. Several months
ara required to complete such a bal
loon. Riggers started work on the bal-l
loon yesterday. When finished the
craft will be more than twice as big
ax anv Snheriral hallnnn nniv at the
fort. -
Omaha Carriers Vote Not
To Adopt Summer Overalls
Omaha mail carriers will not
pace the city's streets this summer in
overalls, as proposed recently by
some members of the force as a
means of reducing the high cost of
letter-toting.
Postmaster H. S. Daniel an
nounced yesterday the carriers had
voted, 129 to 42, against replacing
the present gray, cotton-wool uni
" forms with gray denim. Most of
the carriers, he reported, considered
donning denim would involve a loss
of dignity to the force in making its
members less presentable while on
duty.
The postoffice department, at the
request of Postmaster Daniel, had
granted the men permission to wear
denim if a maioritv favored the
change.
Organization of Alumni
Plans are being made to perfect
an Omaha organization of alumni
of the University . of Nebraska.
Graduates of the university have
been requested to call or send their
names to Virgil Haggart, 628 Kee
line building. Mr. Haggart 'is com
piling' an Omaha roster. -
Addition to Will of
Late Tom Flynn Shows
- Man's Fine Character
A statement attached to (he will
of the late Thomas J. Flynn, United
States marshal, which was filed in
county court yesterday, directs in
touching language, how his estate
shall be administered and what he
hopes for the future of his family.
The statement is written on city
of Omaha stationery and dated Jan
uary 29, 1914. It is as follows:
"Hoping that it is the will of God
that I will be spared to those I love
and to those that love me for many
years to come and still believing
that everyone should leave matters
in such shape that unnecessary
trouble may be avoided and that
whatever is one's estate, whether
large or small, it should be de
livered over to those for whom it is
intended with as much dispatch as
possible, I am leaving this document,
confident that my darling wife will
bring my boys up like the gooq
Christian mother that she is, teach
ing them to be good, practical
Catholics, good citizens and worthy
of the friendship and respect of all
good people. I know that they in
turn will be kind, loving, obedient
sons to her and will care for and
protect her as long as she is left to
them.
"Hoping we will all be spared to
each other for many years and that
we will prosper and he happy.
"TOM FLYNN."
" Mr. Flynn made his will the same
day, leaving all his estate to his
wife, Agnes Flynn, and asking that
she be appointed executrix.

MANAWA PARK
Opens Today
It will only be a few-days now
until our new store will be
opened to SERVE you. '

Farnam streef is the location.
It is, may we say, to be Daddy
Pray's shadow, in that it will give
regular PRAY SERVICE and
have the same lines of merchan

that are handled by the "Daddy"
Pray store. Let's say, then, that
.the new store will be "Sonny"

We are opening this new store for
only one reason, and that is to
make it possible for you to enjoy
trading with PRAY, no matter
where you are. We want to make

Standard
Items
Sold at
Price of 1
- Plus
One Cent
Next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, May 24-25-26, we shall hold another ONE-CENT SALE. Such sales have been held in all the principal cities of the United States
during the last few years, generally in the Rexall Drug Stores, and have been the sensation of the hour. It is particularly timely just now, for in this sale we "Out.Wanamaker"
John Wanamajcer. We could not do this except by the help of the manufacturer in most instances. ' '
THE PLAN OF THE ONE-CENT SALE is as follows: You BUY ONE article at the regular price, and then obtain another of the same kind for ONE CENT. The One
Cent Sale is an outgrowth of modern methods. By its means the manufacturer, anxious for a wider distribution of his products, makes a special concession in. price, thus en
couraging the retailer to co-operate by holding these sales. Thereby a large volume of merchandise is quickly distributed to the public, of course without a cent of profit, but
with the effect of quickly introducing some meritorious article, perhaps hitherto unknown, or increasing largely the d istribution of well-known and standard articles.
In a few cases we wish to "close out" an item on which we have over stockand then we offer goods at a positive money loss to purselves. There is almost a 50 reduc
tion on nearly every item mentioned. There will be sweeping reductions made on all sorts of standard merchandise which is not mentioned below, but which will be included in
this sale.
For this sale, we received from the United Drug Co, a full carload of Toilet and Sundry Articles, which was Lehigh Valley car No. 30233, shipped from Boston March 26,
1920, via N. H. D. L. & W., care of Wabash, which arrived in Omaha April 18. Therefore, our contemplated reduction antedated John Wanamaker and all his local disciples.

Jhi is th Sixth One-Cent Sale we heve run. Each ha beea a
little larger than the previous one.
There will be plenty of help this time, se that all may be served
promptly, and we believe plenty of foods, but the only safe rule is
to come early.
This will be "cash and carry." No goods charged. 1 .
No mail orders filled during this'sele, as we are quite sure that we
shall scarcely have good enough for the Opiah folks who will call
during these three days.
This One-Cent Sale will be held at our 16th and Podge, 16th and
Harney and 18th and Farnam street stores. Our 24th and Farnam and
49th and Dodge street stores will be left "free" for regular business, 1
or wnicn we aave again received the tnenks ot Manager f rather of the
24th and Mrs. Baker of the 49th.
The first One-Cent Sale was held about ( year ago In a New England
Rexall drug store.
These sales are held In staid old Boston. One in particular at the
corner of Washington and Avon streets, which is across from Jordan
& Marsh's big establishment, made even Boston sit up and take notice.
If ypu can't get waited on at our 16th street emporium, go to our
19th and Farnam street store, where there is a little more room and a
little less rush.
BUY one article at the regular price and then another of the
same kind for 1 cent that's it.
Sir Thomas Bren of Dublin, Ireland, but for many years of London,
England, and more recently transplanted to Boston, Mass., will be on
hand during this sale, as factory representetive of the United Drug
Co., of Boston, whose price concessions have, chiefly, made this sale
possible.
Colonel L. E. Grimes, representing the United Drug Co. west of the
Missouri river, will also assist for 3 days.
Mr. L. E. Pearce, Generalissimo of the National Cigar Stands Co.,
will have charge of the pipes and other Strieker's articles. He is a real
"Senor" when it comes to the tobacco line.
The Harley Drug Co., of Lincoln, Neb., are lending us, for this
sale, a couple of young Napoleons of Commerce, the which courtesy we
much appreciate.
Mr. F. H. Coulter, Iowa representative of the United Drug Co.,
will be in charge of a division during this campaign.
