SENATORSHIP IS
PROVIDING MOST
DEBATE IN IOWA
i
Cummins' Unexpected Rival
" Stumps State Democrats
Have Few Contests In
Primary June 7.
' Des Moines, la., May 22. The
race between United States Senator
Albert B. Cummins for renomina
- tion against Col. Smith W. Brook
hirt, a candidate for the senator's
Mat, furnishes the most interesting
feature nationally of Iowa's pri
mary election June 7. There is no
presidential preference at stake in
this election. 1
Until shortly before the list of
candidates for the primary closed
Senator Cummins had no opposi
tion. Since Colonel Brookhsrt en
tered the race, however, both have
been conducting active campaigns
in all parts of the state, especially
40 in the southeastern section. The
opposition to Senator Cummins has
attacked the railroad bill and other
work of his. He has been equally
vigorous in his reply and defense.
i The only democratic candidate for
United States senator is Claude R.
Porter of Centerville.
So far as state offices are con-
cerned, the chief interest centers
in the republican contests. The
democrats have a full ticket in the
Held but very few contests. Their
real fight will come after the pri-
'; mary with the republican candidates.
Four republicans are seeking the
nomination for governor, while
Clyde L. Herrings of Des Moines,
is the only democrat out for that
office. Republican politicians have
predicted freely they will not be
surprised to see the question of the
party's candidate for governor set
tled at the state convention. Under
the state primary laws one of the
, four candidates must get at least 35
per cent of the total vote cast at
the primary, they say. . The four
men in the race are' John F. Deems,
Burlington; N. E. Kendall, Albia;
Ernest R. Moore. Cedar Rapids, and
H. M. Haxner, the present attorney
.general.
The democrats have enlivened the
final race for secretary of state by
naming Miss Ruth Sumner ofyAdel
9s tjieir candidate.
No candidates for congress on the
democratic ticket filed for the pri
mary in several of the congressional
districts. The republicans have two
contests. The most spirited will be
in the First, Sixth and Eleventh dis
tricts. .

Approved by War Department
Washington May 22. (Special
Telegram) The secretary of war
has approved the recommendation
of the chief of engineers that the
district engineer of the army at
Kansas City, Mo., be authorized to
hold a public hearing regarding the
. Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul

! river at Chamberlain, S. D., with
the view of determining the neces
"sary alterations or additions to the
present structure in order that it
'may meet the requirement of con
, tinuous railroad traffic as provided
for in the act of congress approved
February 25, 1919, of which Con
gressman Harry L. Gandy was the
' author. The time and place of the,

Captain Burton Arrives
In New York With Wife
New York, May 22. Captain W.
P. Burton, master of Sir Thomas
Linton's challenger, Shamrock IV,
arrived here Friday from England
abroad the Adriatic, accompanied by
his wife. He said that he will go to
City Island at once to inspect his
craft and stretch her sails.1
. Captain Burton declared he al-
. ready has competed in 999 races.
' Asked if his wife would accompany
.. him on the 1,000th one, as had been
reported, he replied?
j " "Mrs. Burton has not missed any
pi the 999. You can draw your own
conclusions."

. Superior, Neb., May 21. (Special
Telegram.) Jesus Nevario, a Mex
ican, was instantly killed this morn
ing at the Nebraska Cement Plant
. when his sweater coat became
caught in the gears. He has a wife

say.
Government Liquor
Agents Hot on Trail
Of Huge Whisky Ring
Chleag-o Tdbone-Orah B Lcaaed Wire.
Chicago, May 22. Following a
sharp admonition by Federal Judge
Landis to prohibition enforcement
agents "here to "get after the big
fellows," Major Dalrymple's men are
hot on the trail of a vast amount of
liquor hidden away by the "million
dollar whisky trust."
Following the confession of ( a
truck driver, United States Com
missioner Mason issued 12 new
search warrants. This driver admit
ted transporting 700 cases of whisky
at night from warehouses to various
homes, cabarets and saloons. 1
The circle of alleged conspiratprs
is said to have operated under a
veil of legality by selling the liquor
upon forged documents. Capt.
Hubert Howard, state prohibition
administrator, whose name was
forged on the documents, said he
was aware that recently about $300,
000 worth of liquor had been moved
on these spurious permits.
At the federal building jt was
said there would be at least 25 ar
rests made, including one or two
high-priced attorneys. It is predicted
that When the members of the gigan
tic "ring" are in custody, an ex
planation will be forthcoming of the
hundreds of robberies of drug stores
and private homes, in which nothing
but liquo was taken.
Official Checking
Shows But Three Dead
In West Virginia Riot! I
Mateawan, W. Va., May 22. An
official checking late Friday dis
closed that three persons not 12 as
previously reported, were killed in
the battle here Wednesday between
Baldwin-Felts' detectives and miners.
Three were listed as wounded in the
fighting.
The state constabulary and deputy
sheriffs still patrolled the streets Fri
day but there was no disorders.
Orders prohibiting crowds from
congregating in the streets were
issued. Searchers dragged the river
for the bodies of two other detec
tives who, according to witnesses,
were shot and killed while trying
to swim to a place of safety. The
authorities expressed the , opinion,
however, that no olfficers were killed
in this manner.
The sheriffs' deputies-reported that
they had been unable to find who
fired the first shot. '"

By Flood On Grand River
Grand Junction, Colo., May 22.
Cattle, caught in the floo4 waters
of the Grand River, are being swept
past here in the river, which is a
half mile wide at Grand. Junction
and over the banks in places.
The Gunnison river has risen out
of its banks and caused heavy dam
age to ranch property between here
and Paonia.
Rail communication is threatened.
