8 THE BEE: OMAHA, WEDNESDAY, MAY 12, 1920. HOLDING A HUSBAND Adele Garrison's New Phase of Revelations of a Wife What Madge Tried to Guess. Why is it, I wonder, that when we map out for ourselves an especially praiseworthy course of conduct we are not alert enough to avoid stum bling over the obstacles which seem to delight in presenting themselves in the path before our feet? It is but a short time since I took mental stock of my marital life, and solemnly resolved that I would en deavor to bring all the skill and tact and 'consideration I had to my role of wife. And here, because my hus band had commented caustically and disagreeably upon my flushing at his teasing reference to Major Grant land, f had lost my temper and made a retort which I knowwould make him furiously angry. His anger took a Biffcrent course than his usual races. It is one of Dicky's charms or irritating quali ties, I have never been able to de cide which to consider it that iic never knows how he is going to re act to anv test of his seltcontrol This time he stopped abruptly, turn ed toward me, looked at me blackly, and ejaculated slowlv: "Well! I'll be d-d." There have been times when I would have retorted caustically that I had no doubt of his statement, but the prickings of my conscience held me silent, and for a second or two 12 7 rr Pennsyrania mmmm C0R3X TIBE 3 w ftriX v ' "Ton l Ji Vacuum Vacuum Channel 'Ton "tSUI JMWimif Su C.,iftg, Casings Casins Tubal g itd F,briC Crd R,utar Conf ifiJSfc 30x3 18.45 3.00 3.75 jft&Lfe 30x3K ,23.70 38.551 e 35,851 a 3.50 ' 4.40 fc5jtas 32x3H 27.90 42.8SJply 39.9SP1' 3.80 4.75 VyPSCS 31x4 37.30 5.20 6.50 flife 32x4 37.95 54.45 49.05 5.2S 6.55 YUPr'iT 33x4 40.05 56.00 50.45 5.50 6.90 KpM 34x4 40.85 57.40 51.65 . 5.65 7.05 fj&Jr 32x4,4 52.75 61.35 53.75 6.80 8.50 IM 33x44 54.90 63.00 55.20 6.95 8.70 M&P, 34x45 55.35 64.65 58.20 7.00 8.75 Hv 35x44 57.60 66.15 59.60 7.10 8.90 UKT 36x4H 58.20 67.80 61.00 7.30 9.15 Sy33x5 67.40 76.60 68.95 8.05 10.05 (A 35x5 70.95 80.35 72.35 8.50 10.65 XN 3.7x5 74.60 84.05 75.70 8.85 11.05 HighestQualityiinc Moderate Prices go hand in hand in Vacuum Cup Tires and "Ton Tested" Tubes just the re verse of what dealers tell us is the im pression entertained by many people. I stood silently facing my husband's angry gaze. Then he turned abrupt ly, cut savagely at a wayside bush with his stick, and said with a sneer in his voice: "tfave it your own way, dear heart. Perhaps .you have discovered the real reason of my 'aversion to Majah Grantland.'" His voice drawled maddeningly as he mimicked my words with as tonishing fidelity, but I pressed my lips firmly together with the resolve that I wouldn't let my temper get the better of me again, no matter what he might say. We walked in silence the remainder of the short way home, and it was only when Dicky saw Alfred and Leila linger ing by the gate that he dropped his sulky manner with alacrity. It has always been an unspoken compact between us I think it is with any husband? and wives who have a spark of natural pride in their hearts that the approach of outsiders is the signal for the tem porary shelving of any quarrel. It may be resumed again the moment we are alone together, but in the presence of others we are apparently on the best of terms. Lillian is al ways the exception. Dicky rarely veils his feelings before her. "I've broken the news, Alf," lie called gayly, as we caught uo to the others at the gate. 1 hope .you approve, Mr. Madge," Alfred Durkee bowed mock ingly, but I saw in' his eves a faint reflection of the troubled doubt which was mirrored only too faith fully in Leilas. With a little shock I realized that both of them had dreaded my reception of the news that Dicky was to be Alfred's best man. The knowledee turned me fairlv ill. Mad I worn my heart so olainlv on my sleeve, I wondered, that both Alfred and Leila knew my feeling toward Edith Fairfax, fathomed the reluctance I would feel at seeing hep and Dicky associated as maid of honor and best man at Leila's wedding? I threw tup my head with the de termination that I would lull their doubts if it were a possible thing for me to do so. 'Approve!" I- said emphatically. I should think I do. Indeed, "i should have been quite jealous if you'hadnt asked him to stand up with you. Dickv's vour oldest friend, you know, but I tlioueht for awhile you wer$ going to pass him by and give Major Grantland the honor." Madge's Mistake. I had said the wrong thing again. I ktjew it as soon as it passed my lips, and had it impressed more forcibly upon me by the' swift gleam of irrepressible amusement which came into Alfred Durkee's eyes, the startled look in Leila's, the mock ing deviltry of the glance Dicky shot me, and which I knew masked his anger. That Alfred and Leila acquitted me of any unusual interest in Major Grantland I was sure. But that they knew of Dicky's absurd jealousy of the young army officer I saw by the look in their eyes, and was hu miliated by the thought that oar emotions were thus laid bare for these friends, dear as they were, to gaze upon, no doubt to discuss. Then like a sudden flame came the question searing its way into my heart: What was the real reason for giv ing Dicky the preference over Maj. Grantland? Was it because Edith Fairfax had wished the present arrangement? (Continued Tomorrow.) Another surprising fea ture of the Apex is that it actually, decreases the family budget. The Apex is so perfectly balanced, so free from lost motion and undue friction, that only about 2. cents worth of current is used in doing the entire washing. In lact,' it reduces the cost of-, w a s h i n g so materially that it pays for itself with the saving it effects from use. Our easy payment plan makes it possible for anyone to afford it. In deed, no one cfan afford to be without it. The Apex Electric Washer Is BEST Because FIRST There is always a precedence and distinction attached to the first, the original. The very term "first" implies leadership and the highest achievement. It is justly applied to the Apex Electric Washer. Apex owners take pride in. their .possession of the first' oscillator, which has always led imitators, because the Apex patents protect it, '4n imitation never eqtials the original model. Owners also take pride in the fact that the Apex was the first to come equipped with an adjust able, swinging, power-driven wringer a wringer which Operates from four positions and is capable of being driven at the same time as the machine. There are many other features of the Apex which give owners just feelings of pride. Sturdiness and perma nency are radiated by its all-metal construction. Tfiere is something clean and sanitary about the appearance of the Apex which meets your approval as a machine fit to wash your clothes. The absence of all unnecessary parts reflects the care and skill with which the Apex has been designed. Mov ing parts inside the tub are unnecessary and are hard on the clothes they are not to be found in the Apex. There is nothing but heavily tinned, rustproof walls, lined with the little ""Apexes" that do so much toward removing the dirt from your clothes, safely and quickly. The Apex wins a permanent welcome in homes where it is tried. Its economy, efficiency and ability to render life-long service are at once apparent. Arrange today for your free trial. Resort to paint and pow der are totally unnecessary and besides that, are harmful. Three-grain hypo-nu-clane tablets, if used regularly for several months, seem to create a greatly added number of millions to the red and white corpuscles of the blood, and not only Im prove the color, but add increased flesh to the thin and Trail body. These tablets promote assimilation, absorption and di gestion, and this splendid aid to nature's forces transforms the complexion and fig ure. They are prescribed by physicians, but being of a perfectly harmless character, self-administration is being followed by many, who obtain them direct from any well-stocked apothecary shop. An inflammation is set up and matter is thrown off which causes the air cells to solidify, thus preventing the natural flow of blood thru the lungs. This "backing up" of the blood causes the heart to pump harder, just as stepping on a hose increases the water pres sure, which is the reason why, during this disease, the physician watches the overburdened heart so carefully. After recovery the lungs are filled with a mass of wreckage the debris of the battle which must be gotten rid of by a process known as resolution . Frequently , inflamed spots remain, congestion persists, cough hangs on, and the least exposure brings on a cold that is hard to get rid ot. If neglected, such damaged air pas sages may easily develop serious disease of the lungs. Such cases should always con tinue under a physician's care and frequent examinations should be made to see that nature is 30c 60c tl.20 ire properly continuing the rebuild" ing process.
