Anson Best, convicted last night of the murder of Vera Schneider, a tele phone operator, and sentenced to life imprisonment at Marquette, will not be taken to the northern Mich igan prison immediately. A move ment to finance an appeal by popu lar subscription begun immediately after the verdict was being continued today. In his statement before sentence was pronounced, Best called upon heaven to witness his innocence, and a purse was immediately started. It was said to contain $1,000 this morning- The prisoner maintained he had never known Miss Schneider and that the confession offered by the prosecution was obtained from him under duress.
