PAPER SHORTAGE
DUE TO INCREASE
OF CONSUMPTION
Publisher of Baltimore Sun
Tells Senators Producers
Are to Blame More Than
Publishers.
Washington, April 29. Lack of
satisfactory understanding between
the publishers and print paper man
ufacturers was held to be responsi
ble in part for the present paper
shortage by Taul Patterson, one of
the publishers of the Baltimore Sun,
in testimony today before the sen
ale manufacturers' committee inves
tigating the paper situation. He
explained that while there would be
no increased production this year,
production in 1921 would be 30,000
tens over that for 1920.
The present shortage, the wit-

ness told the committee, resulted
from increased consumption be
yond the capacity of the paper
mills. Saying that increased prices
for paper .were necessary about
three years ago, he asserted that the
producers failed to take the pub
lishers into their confidence at that
time, with the result that an agita
tion was started against increased
prices and for public control of the
paper industry. Also, the manu
facturers, he said, failed to expand
their plants due to the lack of un
derstanding between them and the
publishers.
As a result of this situation, Mr.
Patterson said, when the publishers
came to renew their paper contracts
this year insufficient paper to meet
demands was discovered, so that
they entered 1920 with a "shortage
of paper on every hand."
Mr. Patterson expressed the belief
that the - universal practice in the
curtailment of paper, which hp said
was being observed by the news
papers, would result in a "marked
effect on the market by fall.
"But nothing effective can be ac
complished unless there is a defi
nite curtailment in the amount of
advertisements," he said, "and the
only way that can be done is to in
crease advertising rates not for the
purpose of increasing revenues, but
to hold down the amount of adver
tising." Traded Land Figures In

"Tanlac Has Brought Me
Health and Happiness,"
Says' Mrs. Mary Noble.
"I am now seventy years of age,
but 1 have actually gained twenty
pounds in weight in just a few
weeks' time," declared Mrs. Mary
Noble of 914 South Seventh street,
West, Cedar Rapids. Iowa, while
telling of her remarkable improve
ment since she began taking Tan
lac. "During the past ten years I have
suffered all the misery that goes
with stomach trouble and nervous
ness. I had to be extremely care
ful about what I ate for even the
lightest kind of food, such as milk
toast, sometimes made me so nau
seated I was unable to keep it down.
Often I became almost deathly sick
and I could taste my food for hours
afterwards. Gas would form on my
stomach and press around my heart
so that it palpitated terribly and I
got so short of breath I often
thought I would suffocate. At night
I was afraid to go to bed for when
1 would lie down I felt like I was
going to smother. My nerves were
in a wretched condition and at night
I would pet so restless I could not
lie in bed and would have to get
up and walk the floor. As a result
I began to lose in weight and I kept
falling off until I lost about twenty
pounds and was no more than a
shadow 6f my former self. I was
almost a wreck and the little house
work I could do was a drudgery and
I became so discouraged I saw little
pleasure in life.
"About two months ago I started
taking Tanlac and it is just wonder
ful how it began to build me up
right from the start. My appetite
returned and my troubles gradually
left me until today I have gained
back all my lost weight and am once
more enjoying splendid health. It
makes no difference what I eat I
can digest it properly and my heart
action is normal and my breathing
is free and easy. .My nerves are
steady, my sleep is sound and rest
ful and every morning I get up feel
ing refreshed and with plenty of en
ergy to attend to all my housework.
Tanlac has given me health, strength
and happiness and I know of no bet

by telling others about it so that
