County Attorney Shotwell de clared yesterday at the hearing of charges against Ed. F. Morearty be fore District Judges Troup, Leslie ana wakeley that there are numer ous attorneys in Omaha who have furnished worthless bonds in get ting prisoners released ,from custody. Mr. Morearty, veteran attorney, is charged with securing the release of Henry Knox from the county iail in July, 1918 on a bond signed by Ella Fuhr. He received $38 irom Knox for this and. it is al leged, 'split" this with Mrs. Fuhr. Excoriates Woman. On the witness stand yesterday County Attorney Shotwell excor iated Mrs. Vuhr when he read a list of 17 bond forfeitures totalling $.5,000 signed by her ,none of which nave been paid. "Can you pay these?" he asked. Mrs. Fuhr said she could not. "Then I notify vou here and now n6t to dispose of your property or to put any further mortgages on it Because these bonds are a first lien against it." Mrs. Fuhr has. two houses at 2712 California street, valued she says, at about $9,000 and encum bered hy $3,400 mortgages. Says Attorney Is Victim. "There are too many worthless "bonds in this county," declared Mr. .Shotwell. Tm tired "of it. Mr. Morearty is just the victim of this practice and it has to be stopped." He exhibited a long list or worth less bonds which have been for feited in recent years and declared that proceedings should be taken in every case. The case will continue this morn ing. C. T. Dickinson and Ben S. Baker are attorneys appearing for Mr. Morearty. 400 Omaha Students Making Annual Trip To Capital City Today About 400 students of the High School of Commerce, under the lead ership of Professor B. A. Polzin, will leave this morning over the Burlington on their second annual educational trip to Lincoln. . At 10 o'clock in the morning, the students will visit the state pen itentiary, later visiting the state farm where a stock judging exhibition will be held. They will also visit the state hospital. Dr. Charles Fordyce, dean of the teachers college of the state univer sity, will'lecture on various subjects relating to Nebraska. Gov. Samuel R. McKelvie will deliver an address on "The Young Citizen and the State." j The visit will conclude with a de hate between Omaha and Lincoln high schools for the championship of flie eastern district of the NeJ braska High School Debating league. The local team will uphold the negative side. Pickard, 61 years old. pioneer citizen, died yesterday at his home 6002 Center -street, follow ing a long illness. Private funeral services will be held at the home at 1:15 p. m. today and services under Masonic auspices will be held at 2 p. m. at the Burket chapel. Inter ment will be in Evergreen ceme tery. , Mayor Is Delegate Mayor Ed P. Smith has been elected as a delegate to the demo cratic county convention, according to the official canvass of the recent vote. Col. J. G. Fulkmeyner, the gener al's chief-of-staff, has notified the committee that General Pershing is unable to promise definitely t(j be in Omaha July 4 so far in advance, but that if his plans can be so arranged, he will be only too glad to accept. Currie Is Elected , President of Rotarians The following officers were elect ed Wednesday night at a meeting of the Rotary club in Hotel Fontenelle: A. B. Currie, . president: B. Park Billings, vice president: Ray Kings ley, re-elected secretary, and B. A. Wilcox, re-elected treasurer. John Lionberger, Charles Gardner, Dex ter Buell and Max Harding were elected to serve on the directorate. O. B. Goodrich was the retiring president. Rev. John Best, a visiting Ro tarian, spoke in behalf of the Inter church World Movement. Delegates who attended the recent district con ference in Des Moines made their report. Want All Service Men to March In May Day Parade A final reminder to service men to be on hand to march in the big Americanization parade Saturday afternoon, was issued by the com mittee in charge of arrangements yesterday. Employers were urged to allow freedom to all former service men that could be spared to march. All former service men are urged to appear in uniform. It is de sired that all insignia of rank be omitted. Among the bands that will march will be the 20th infantry regiments' band from Fort Crook, Central High school cadet band and theom from Creighton university.
