New York, April 27. Total earn ings of the United States Steel cor poration for the first quarter of 1920 show an upward trend from the final quarter of 1919, the aggregate of $42,089,019 representing an in crease of $6,297,717; net income of $31,323,701 increased $8,283,426, and surplus of $13,373,085, a gain of $8, 150.797. . Regular dividends of 1H per cent on the preferred and 1J4 on the common were in keeping with gen eral expectations, no advance in the common rate of distribution having been regarded as probable after the recent statement of Chairman E. II. Gary. Analysis of the quarterly report disclosed some irregularity of busi ness. January returns were well above $14,000,000, while those of February, a shorter month, fell slightly under $13,600,000, with a rebound to $16,402,898 for March. On the basis of today's figures. the common stock earned $3.88 for " the quarter, against the previous return of onlyi$2.27 and $3.43 in the third quarter of 1919. The year's first -quarter made a better showing than any since the third quarter of 1918, when the earnings reached $42,961,589. Rec ord figures during the war were es tablished in the second quarter of 1918. when earnings amounted to $62,557,391. Iceland Asks Permission To Enter League of Nations Washington, April 27. Applica tion by Iceland for membership in the league of nations, news of which has just reached Washington, will call attention to the little known fact that Iceland is now a completely independent state. The application states that Denmark voluntarily accorded independence to the island government in Decem ber. 1918. ' Three other states have filed ap plications for admission to the league, the republic of Georgia, San Marino and Luxembourg. Greeks Protest Vatican's .Claim to St. Sofia Church Constantinople, April 27.
