TIRE MILEAGE ON AERO-EIGHT . ia niir rri-riinr louiicrcHiunc One pr the Many Distinctive Claims of Builders Others Are Fuel Economy, Power and Speed. Among the distinctive claims of the Cole Aero-Eight to recognition in th motor world are its increased tire mileage, its fuel economy, its . power, speed 'and acceleration, its mechanically correct body, its well balanced shock absorbing frame, its ability to operate with maximum ef ficiency, even with low grades of fuel, and its exclusive aerotype de sign. It has been proved that the orig inal tire equipment on a Cole Aero Eight is consistently capable of 15, 000 miles or more, an achievement without precedent. More than a year of actual service has disclosed that an average of from 12 to 14 miles per gallon of gasoline in an 80-horsepower, eight cylinder motor is a reality in-the Aero-Eight. The increased efficiency of the motor has given the Aero-Eight - greater reserve power, speed, ac celeration and a new smoothness of operation. Because of these facts, the Cole Aero-Eight, weighing only pounds, travels at a speed of 70 miles an hour with no greater vi bration and effort than if it were traveling 35 miles an hourv- Valve Stem Guide Bushings. In engines not fitted with special valve stem guide bushings excessive wear of the guide and consequently valve stem side play and oil leak age may be prevented by reaming the guide and fitting a bronze bush ing. The bushing may be obtained already machined from any supply house. In fitting the valve should center on the tappet, otherwise there will be a side thrust against the bushing and it will wear eccen trically. ( Carbureter Trouble. Many cars have no provision cside from a '-trainer in the tank for keeping out dirt from the carbur et r. Owners of such vehicles will do well to fit a trap in the fuel line. All the big carbureter makers offer these traps, which are to be placed in the line near the carbureter or in the bottom of the tank. The trap catches all the dirt and water and f-hovld be cleaned out regularly once a month. , Shifter Lever Troubles. Excessive play in the main shaft of the gearset may cause the gear shifter lever to be forced out of position. Usually the front bearing on the main shatt is shimmed, so that the condition is easily remedied. End play in this shaft also may be the cause of chattering in the clutch and a buckling when the car is on a grade or otherwise pulling hard under load. If this is not corrected in. time fhe shaft play may cause permanent injury to ,tne gears Vanderbilt Cup Race Winner Here The above picture is a National racing car which won the Vander bilt Cup race in 1910. After-doing more or less service here and there about the country this car has found its way to Omaha and is in the hands of A. H. Haught, service manager for the National Car Calcs corporation. Haught, by the way, was sent to France during the war to take charge of the service on the 300 Na tional sedans which were used dur ing the war. Traveling Restaurant : Great Boon to Housewife Denver' housewives whose apart ments afford but limited cooking fa cilities, or who have spent the after noon shopping or visiting, have had their dinner problem solved by the Denver Table Supply Co. This con cern operates a traveling kitchen and delicatessen store which consists of an elaborate enclosed, white body on a Republic truck chassis, driven by a young woman in uniform. The big vehicle visits a modern apartment house district just before meal time and "miladi of the cliff dwellers" can order a family meal from the conventional soup to des sert On the, truck are steam tables for keeping food and dishes warm, a range for cooking short orders and an expert chef whose-dexterous hand prepares the food. A refrigerating compartment installed on the truck keeps meat, fruits, milk, etc., in prime condition, and plenty of stor age space is available for foods vjhich require neither extreme heat nor cold. Pump Leakage. When the water pump begins leaking do not assume that neces sarily it is because the nut is too looss. Frequently the, nut is not to blame at all, but poor packing is the real cause of the trouble Packing for this part consists ot candle wide soaked in tallow, heavy twine similarly treated or special packing material. After the nut has been turned to press the packing down do not tum it further as ex cessive squeezing is apt to dam age some part of the body of the pump. Battery Headings. In taking battery readings with the hydrometer the operation should be performed x before the distilled water is added to the solution, which will otherwise be diluted and a wrong reading given. Also after the water has been put in it takes some time to mix with the acid. The water being lighter stays on top, and if the hydrometer is used, say an hour after the water has been added, it will take up only a weak solution, which is not the real one. One out of every 10 men seen on the street is a motor car owner. Correcting Body Sag. .. When the doors on one side ot the body do not fit properly, either bind so that they are hard to close or fit too loosely, with so much clearance that the catch will not snap, the trouble may be cured by placing wooden wedges under -the body at the rearJ Metal plates may flso be used. In either case the wedge could be bolted through the frame so that it will remain firmly in place. Fenders and Bulbs. In cars where the headlamps are fastened to the fenders, looseness in these latter results in excessive vibration, which will account for rapid ruin of bulbs. iff CADILLAC Recognized everywhere for its PERMANENCY of- -VALUE J. Consequently, instead of trying to sell a farmer a big, bulky truck, they built what the farmer wanted; a speedy truck of about the carrying ca pacity he actually needed. ; Andinto this truck they put the same hon est material which characterizes Reo products. Oil Instead of Grease. The car owner who is handy with tools may find it profitable to re place a number of the grease cups which lubricate important parts of the mechanism, by an oil reservoir with leads running to these various parts, such for instance, as the thrust bearing or throwout collar of the clutch. This oiler should bt constructed much Jike a mechanical oiler with control for each lead.
