GUY. the tire dealer. who fails to make good on a bum fcnaranteed" tire. Why should I. Yo bu. boueht the tire. It's vours. You used it. If it didn't last that's your fault. " Why should you come back to tne? I say "guaranteed," but that's only when you buy tires that last out the distance I name. I don't mean it when the tire "flivs" on you. Besides you haven't any call on me. Just because I say a tire & "guaranteed" is no proof that it is. If you want to take my word for it, that's your fault. . Anyway, you ought to know enough about tires to know they're liable to wear out, or go bad some way or another. And vou oueht to be sport enough to take a chance, and not come back at me. Where are my profits f I make good the guarantee. If you don't like it, that's 'your worry, not mine. I don't intend to make good every time a "guaran teed" tire goes bad. I'm not to blame, it's only a selling argument. That's how I feel about.it. began to scrub. She scrubbed the walls and the sides of the stalls, and the floor. The Twins scrubbed, too, until they were tired; and the stable was so clean you would have liked to live there yourself. "Let's play out here," said Kat "Let's play house." , "All right," .said Kit, "I'llHe the father and you be the mother," "But who will be Twins:" said Kat.- ' ' "Let's get the ducklings," said Kit. "They can be Twins, of course," said Kat. "They are, anyway.'' - So Kit ran out and brought in the ducklings.- They were so tame thev always ran to Kit and Kat when they saw them coming. They were almost ducks how, they, had grown so big. "Let's give the Twins their din ner," said Kat. So she got some grain, and they both sat down on a little box and held the, ducks in their laps and fed them from their hands. The ducks ate greedily. "You have very bad manners." said Kat. "You vill get your clothes all dirty." She took two rags and tied them around the ducks' aecks for bibs. The ducks did not like bibs. They quacked. "Now don't say anything like that," said Kat. , "You must do iust as you are told and not spill your food." ',. Then Kit got some water and a spoon and gave the Twins a drink, but they did not like the drink, either. ........ "Now we must put them to sleep." said Kat. They rocked the ducks in their arms, but the ducks squawked dreadfully. "What; bad children to cry sol" said Kit "You can have both the Twins;" and he gave his duck to Kat. "You fix a bed for them," said Kat. So Kit turned up the box thev had been sitting on and put some hay in it; and they put the ducks in1 on the hay. Pretty soon the ducks went to sleep. Kit and Kat ran away to play put of doors and forgot all about them. They didn't think about them again until Father Vedder cami home at night with Mevrouw Hol- stejn. When he put the cow into the stall he stumbled over the box. It was rather dark in the stable. "Quack, quackl" said. the ducks. . Kit and Kat were helping Father put the cow into the stall and get some hav ton her. When the ducks quacked, Father Vedder said: "What in the wond is thisf ."Oh, our Twins 1 our Twin 1" cried Kit and Kat. . "Don't let Mevrouw Holstein -step on the Twins!" Father Vedder pulled out the box. Kit and Kat each took a duck and carried it out to the poultry house. "Twins are a great care," said Kit and Kat. (Rights Reserved by Houghton. Mifflin Co.) Are' Birds' Different f Wheeler Eggs of Colors? (Copyright. 120, by The Syndicate, Inc.) One of nature's very wise pro visions is in equipping all living things . with protection of some kind against iheir enemies. The larger animals are able, by rea son of their strength, to give a good account of themselves , in combat. Birds and many of the smaller animals depend principal ly upon the rapidity of their movements. But there is still an other and moSt effective means of self-preservation known as "protective coloration." Snakes, form an excellent illus tration of this, as do many vari eties of, fish. Their scales are so colored that they blend in with the surrounding rocks or the shad ows of the water, making them almost invisible to the eye. Jn fact, it is only wlien one of these protectively - colored animals moves that its presence is appar ent. This same principle is res-' ponsible for the different colors of birds' eggs. The mother bird is not able to fight aggressively, so she has to seek refuge in flight. During the time-that shq is away from the nest, either while seeking safety from her en; emies or while looking for food, the eggs must be protected in some manner. It is for this rea son that they are colored to blend in with the surroundings jn which they are laid some of them spot ted becaqse they are laid in the sand or among pebbles, others buff-colored or green to match the material of the nest.
