Another blow af the high cost of living, especially directed at alleged unfair practices on the part. of some retail grocers in the city and state in the sale of sugar, was aimed yes-' terday by Mrs. C. G. Ryan, Ne braska federal fair price commis sioner, when she called a meeting of representative Omaha wholesale jobbers at the Hotel Fontenelle to discuss the prevailing sugar short age and high prices. To Equalize Prices. In addition to representatives of wholesale concerns in Omaha and Iowa, the meeting was attended by H. G. Larrimer, federal fair price commissioner for Iowa, and three investigators of the local department of justice, who are co-operating with Mrs. Kyan in carrying on the gov ernment campaign to reduce prices. The purpose of the meeting, it was said, was to arrive t a plan to equalize the price of sugar sold to the consumer on the basis of the rnnfrarf rt-ir roVior tViarl flint nt . :i: 1.-1 t : nic prevailing mantel. nivcsiigrt- tions of the department of justice, it was said, had indicated that many dealers were taking advantage of the public in buying a a low price and retailing at a high price without equalization. Appoint Committee. Following a lengthy discussion of prices affecting the wholesaler through a restricted and fluctuating market in sugar, a committee of five wholesale grocers, with Charles Pickens of the Paxton & Gallaghar Co., wav selected- to offer a report on a plan for the equalization of prices by. the conditions of which all wholesalers "agreed to abide. Other members of the committee are: Bert, Howe. of the McCord Brady Co., OmahaA. C. Lau of Lincoln? J. Donold of Grand Island, and H. W. Abpt of Columbus. The report of the committee,, which convened immediately after the. meeting, was not made public pending a -ruling on certain of its provisions, which Mrs. Ryan ex pects to get within afFw days. A still farther shortage of sugar now more prevalent in the cast than the west, which might seriously af fect spring preservation of fruits, was predicted by H. G. Larrimer, unless present conditions are re lieved. Switzerland, it has been estimated, could produce almost 8.000,000 horsepower electrically by harness ' ing its waterfalls.
