M'KEEN STOCK
IN MOTOR FIRM
BOUGHT BY U. P,
Organizer and President o)
Omaha Industry Sells His
Entire Holdings to Rail
road Company.
V. R. McKeen. organizer and
president of the McKeen Motor Car
Co., sold his entire holdings in that
company to the Union Pacific rail
road Wednesday, lie announced
Wednesday night.
Neither Mr. McKeen nor Carl R.
Gray, president of the railroad, who
confirmed the purchase, would di
vulge the amount paid for the for
mer's stock. The Union Pacific has
heen in control of a large share of
the stock of the company since its
organization and with the acquisition
of the McKeen holdings, is in pos
session of virtually the entire issue.
Mr. Gray left the city last night on
a short business trip.
, Organized Years Ago.
The company was organized sev
eral years ago to manufacture a
gasoline motor driven passenger car
for interurban railroad travel. Mr.
McKeen designed the car and en
gine while he was superintendent
of the Union Pacific shops at Oma
ha. Cars manufactured by the com
pany are now in operation in all
parts of the country.
The plant owned bv the company
is located at 1222 Webster street,
adjacent to the Union Pacific shops,
of which it has always been prac
tically a unit. Trior to the war pro
duction was given entirely to mo
tor cars and repair parts. During
the war munitions were contracted
for and delivered by the company.
Plant Covers Acres.
Among machines turned out were
several motor truck winches for use
at the army balloon school at Fort
Omaha. The plant covers several
acres.
Just what disposition will be
made of the facilities offered by the
plant is not known among Union
Pacific officials as news of the pur
chase was not general at railroad
headquarters today. It is believed
that the plant will be diverted to
strictly Union Pacific work, such as
the manufacture of standard repair
parts. Production of parts for mo
tor cars will continue, as the rail
road has several cars in operation
Judge Rules Liquor
Evidence Obtained by
Trespass is Illegal
Marquette, Mich., April 22. Any
search and seizure by federal pro
hibition agents that would amount
to tresspass under constitutional
law is illegal, Federal Judge Clar
ence W. Sessions stated during the
trial of Scalcucci brothers in con
nection with the Iron river whisky
rebellion.
Judge Sessions, in his statement,
expressed the opinion that the pro
hibition act deals with conditions
greatly different from those exist
ing prior to national prohibition
and that all provisions of the reve
nue laws consistent with present
conditions must be set aside.
The court also held that any
indictment which charges only the
setting up of a distilling apparatus
and not its use is defective as far
as that charge is concerned.
