) THE OMAHA" SUNDAY BEE: APRIL 18, 1920. $ms Teach C6nvalescent Omahan Little Known Art ml French ren ramiing v ' .1 ' SA;;Roddie Given Some Compensation for Being : .Blown Ud Dunne Shell Attack, Being Mistaken "" For Dead and Nearly Buried Alive On Battle-. neias oi r ranee nas uraers xrum umua xo- 'r Jr trons Already and Will Open School of Art. 17 s . s. ir i k Being blown up durinft a shell at tack., and then being mistaken for dead and nearly buried alive ordi narily .constitute! pretty hard luck but, after all, it has its compensa tion, ,S- A. Roddie, 316 South Twenty-sixth street, to whom the experience was given, is telling his friend .today. ' For it was through his mishap that fce mastered the centuries-old att of French pen painting, and is today-the only one in Omaha, and probably the only one in the United States, capable of applying this delicate) method of decorating fine fabrics. i,The are was learned (while he was confined in a British hos pital ;at. Rouen, France, where he waa.convalesfing from his experi ences in the trenches. It was taught him by nuns .from a nearby convent who art today the only ones in Europe-practicing the art of pen paint ing,', which once flourished in the land of? the fleur de lys. ; ,'.. Enlisted With Canadians. Mr. Roddie resided in Omaha for sevralyears prior to 1904, when he moved to. Los Angeles. In 1915. with, 90. other men from that city, h-ent to Toronto, Canada, and enlisted for service in France. Mr. Roddie--was made a sergeant at once, because of experience he had gained in. the Boer war. After two months' -service he was tent to Eng land, 'and 'after three months train ing there, went to France. His bat tauoowjhe 83d infantry, saw action at Yores, Vimyf ridge, and alt of the ether -engagements in which Canadian, troops fought. He -went through) all that .fighting practically unscathed. .... German Signals Flashed. N lit. September, 1917, his company was Stationed at Avion, a suburb of Lena.' The night of September 12 he' wai "assigned a member of a working party to run a new com munication trench from support trenches to the front line. Under the command of two lieutenants the party moved forth. . Sergeant Rod die; acting" as company runner, was stationed at the head of the line to watch Or. and report signals. After half an hour of work he noticed and reported -two red rockets from the German lines. .These called for ar tillery fire preparation. They were reported io the officers in command of. the, party, who directed that the workt continue. Almost immediate ly .Sergeant Roddie noticed four German flares fired, which called fpr immediate artillery action. ' ' He took it upon himself, he said, to order; the party to return to their dugouts.-.They had about 500 yards to go JUjd, had covered about half the distance, when thje shells began toarve,"It was every man for himself then. Heard Others Getting Hit. "I threw away my shovel," Rod die saidand as I ran I could hear other men getting hit by shell fragT merits.' ', They were bursting as close as 50 yards from us. Then, sudden ly, I just went out. The next thing I , knevt l',was. lying on a stretcher, minus mr coat, trousers, helmet, shoes and puttees, and seemed to be wet. . I looked around and found J was in a small room filled with racks, each one holding a stretcher. I noticed the man above me and those 'on each side were dead. "Then. I heard voices nearby, and tried to attract attention.l A man came in, and as I struggled to rise he let . out a yell and dashed but On his commotion several others fathered and I was carried outside, here they told me I had been "dead -for 48 hours, and that even . then a train was ready tct.carry my . self, and "the others in the morgue, where. I had been placed, to a ceme tery Jot burial." t -Taken to Hospital , 1 Roddie was conveyed to a clearing station, and later sent to the hos pital at Rouen. One day, he ex plained,? a group of nuns from a convent asked if any of the wounded men cafed to learn French pen paint ing,"" He gladly, took up their offer, he said, as he had been informed by surgeons ' that his wounds would mean- permanent r disablement, and also because he had considerable talent for drawing and painting. He continued his studies in the Francis Lewis studios in London, after' being removed there". After his-discharge from .the ..; army he sought to practice his art in Canada, but -finding the winters too eevere, returned to Omaha. -if-.: Pen-Painting Explained. ' "French pen-painting explained by Mr. Roddie, consists of decorating 'abrica with designs ordinarily con fined to embroidery, by using a spe cial oil paint, placed with a pen. This . wort can be done on silk, satin, vel vet ; linen, felt hats or hoisery. The paint used sets after three days, and tftea becomes as nearly a part of the fabric as do the threads of em x broidery.. According to Mr. -Roddie, liecet so decorated my be handled md washed wtihout fear of destroy ing the Sainted designs. The work, he says, is adapted to blouses, table covers, luncheos sets, pillow -covers, collars, cuffs, stock ings, handkerchiefs, and anything else that may be beaded or embroid-ered.-The fine work permitted by t -ttserof a pen, he explained, al wt' the application of much finer and . mote intricate designs than rn be- worked bv a needle. Diminu tive flowers, in their natural colors, Htthr best embroiders could not duplicate' are possible in his work, he. explained. , Work Attracts Attention. Mr..Roddie's work has attracted ttentten wherever it has been seen in Omaha. Mrs. George A. Joslyrt haa ordered several pieces of special deetcntand several .other Omaha matrons possess examples. Mr, v Roddie- now has several pupils learn ing4beart and has expressed s -;iHnrniM to teach others. Vrench, oen painting permits of individual expression in a most un usual medium." he said. "Masters i Am nrocess can- create their own ' fttcAritkaa and make giftt for friends. Work of this kind has not been on the American art-market hefor k the small outout of the sinarle fconven't that preserves the' painting is all taken in France." W. J. Bryan to Speak .
