THE OMAHA SUNDAY' BEE: APRIL 11, 1920. 7 A IE PLANT FLOWERS ALONG WALK TO BEAUTIFY HOME i Flowering Plants Offer Econ omy of Space on Yard of Small Dimensions. r ML A Y A decorative scheme, and one that offers an economy of space on a yard of small dimensions, is a row, or low edging of flowering plants along the walk or driveway. A com bination that offers every Rood nud ity and no bad ones, consists of four o'clock and sweet alyssuni. lie four o'clock makes a compact bush or miniature tree from two to three feet tall, varying with the soil, and It is covered with bloom until cut down by a hard frost. The alys sum makes a solid sheet of white. There is no flower of easier culture than the four o'clock. It opens late in the afternoon and closes as soon as the sun gets hot. On cloudy days it remains open later. It gives a variety of color, ranging from white striped, pink, magenta,' scarlet and through pale, to deep yellow. It is really a perennial, and its thick fleshy roots may be dug in the fall, and wintered like dahlias, but it grows so easily and quickly from seed, this is hardly worth while. notner beautiful plant for a walk rOW Or 1nw lllHxi nr hnrler tti O'd-fashioned balsam, pr .touch-me nor, so named tor the manner in w hich the seed pods explode at ma turity when touched, showering the seeds in all directions. This is a tender plant and should not be planted outdoors until settled weath er, but could be started with ad vantage inside. Transplanting makes it stocky, and gives it a tendency to branch out. To Conceal Steps. A well-grown plant will be two feet high or better, and the steps will be almost concealed with the double rosettes of various shades, some of them beautifully spotted and tigered. A taller growth and a standby , Lgay Piei- ir the latter half of the summer is the African mari gold. This, too, needs an early start. It makes a three-foot high screen, and will be covered with huge orange and yellow-fluted globes until the first hard frost. A sturdier bush, and one that is used to shield foundations to the house with excellent effect, is the zinnia in its new colossal varieties. Given proper space to develop, it will make a bush, two feet through and three feet high, with a wide range of enormous flowers, which bear one. of the- finest subjects for bouquets the whole class of annuals furnish. The zinnia is hardier somewhat than the marigold and four o'clock. A taller hedge or row is formed with the flowering tobac cos, knwon as nicotionas. Nicotiana affinis is the mose popular of these, because of its fine petunia fragrance at night It opens late in the aft-' ernoon with myriads of star-shaped white flowers ot long tubes. There are now hybrid varieties of various shades of rose and lavender. The leaves are huge and ornamental. It is an altogether desirable, orna mental plant. Much more stately in growth, and one of the most picturesque of all annuals is the nicotiana sylves tris, sometimes called the giant star flower. It grows four feet, or more, high, with good soil and moisture, with tiuce 1ravc nbrw wfiirh is an enormous bouquet of white star shaped flowers on long, white tubes. A single plant in the center of the bed, bordered with lower growing annuals, makes a stately specimen. These ' nicotianas should be plant ed at least 18 inches apart. Syl vestria needs even two feet to have plenty of room. The African mari gold can do well with a foot apart, is its space and the balsam are about the same. Zinnias need 18 inches, if they are to have their full chance, and four o'clocks shouldn't be closer than a foot at most. - It is a good plan to start any of these plants desired in a cigar box, in the house, now, to have them ready when the ground is suited for them. Greatest Trade Boom In History of World Predicted London. April 10. "The world is ix years behind in point of produc tion and therefore one of the great est trade booms in history lies be fore us," is the declaration of Colo nel Cummings, president of the John B. Stetson company, now vis iting England. ' "The United States especially is crying out tor tsriusn gooas, ana there can be little fear of overpro duction for many years to come. "At the same time the great finan cial authorities of America are tak ing a long and cautious view of the situation. Because trade is so good and money so plentiful, they do not want an era of wild speculation to begin. For this reason they have no intention of extending credit ex cept on the most conservative basis. "Americans feel that considering the extraordinary sacrifices made by Great Britain in the war, her finan cial position is wonderful, and that once her war nerves are forgotten, she will speedly resume her old po u-iear Limn un wage i Earning Much Opposed London, April 10. The popular view as to what is old age seems to have undergone a strikirfg change since Dr. Osier died. When Commons considered a sec tion of the unemployment bill which places the limit for earning a living at 70 years, Mr. Galbreath. an ex coal miner M. P.. opposed it, de claring his mother, aged 92, had earned $3 in the fortnight just ?nded. The section was withdrawn. Goodyear Opens Municipal Aviation Field at Los Angeles Te stimulate public interest in . .! . . .1., Motor Trucks Should Be Selected With Due ' Regard to Conditions Roads, loads and volume arc three things that enter into the selection of a motor truck. If capacity loads can be carried regularly, it is a fact that the larger the truck the more economical it is to operate. Savings effected through observance of this rule greatly outstrip any savings that might be effected in the purchase1 of a smaller-sized unit. For instance coal companies have proved to their own satisfaction that five-ton trucks deliver coal at nearly one-half the oer ton cost of delivery by one or two-ton trucks. The reason for this- is plain. The overhead expense of the five-ton truck is but slinhtlv more than that of a one or two-ton truck, yet the volume of coal delivered is from four to five times as great Size determined, the question of chassis length, must be considered. Lengthy material, such as pipe or lumber requires a long wheelbase truck. Bulky but lighf material, such as cmptv barrels or furniture, likewise should be handled with a lens wheelbase truck. Some types of load can best be hauled with trailers or semi-trailers. The ques tion of body type is a separate one. Tiie selection of the proper gear ratio is most important. Good, hard roads with only normal grades re quire gearing which does not sac rifice speed for unnecessary power. Conditions which present ' shor4 stretches of heavy going or an in frequent steep grades should have gearing which provides a maximum high-gear speed with lower and re verse gears giving abnormal pulling power. Road conditions which do not warrant a high speed, or a hilly country havinogood roads, require a gear ratio giving a lower high gear speed than ' normal. Special gearing should be specified where extreme conditions are encountered. jr Roos Adds Motorbike to His List of Products Victor H. Roos, Harley Daviuon motorcycle and Stronghold automo bile distributer, has just taken on the Evan's Motorbike. "The average man," says Mr. Roos, "does not care so much to pedal a bicycle but with the Evans all a fellow needs to do is to squeeze the handle bar and feel his bicycle carry him along at any speed he desires. "The upkeep cost is practically nil as it "will run a hundred miles on a gallon of gasoline and a thousand onaquart of oil." Auto Truck Owners Should ' Make Best Use of Cars "Just as Director Ilines said in his last appeal to shippers, before turning the railroads back to pri vate ownership, that they should mate the best use of freight cars, so should every truck owner apply the same rule in his transportation department," says C. J. Dutton ot the C. J. Dutton Automotive Co., local Kissel distributer. "As rapidly as American in dustries and manufacturers increase their output in their race to catch up with demands, so too, will the freight traffic demands of the coun. try increase." Gil Anderson Returns To the Stutz Motor Co. Gil Anderson, sensational engi neer pilot and outstanding figure in automobile racing history, has returned as head of the experimental engineering department of the Stutz. Motor Car Company of America, Inc., Indianapolis. An intrepid race driver, Ander son's skill and daring have made him a contender in every big motor classic since his debut a a Stutz pilot in the first 500-mile race on the Indianapolis motor speedway.
